Nice coping you have there, I would expect nothing less from the foremost conceited Monster stan of MAL. Good job!

PS When I said they I wasn't specifically referring to you, but to all people who posted here, otherwise I would have used your name or said OP.

Macross Plus
how many Macross entries have you seen? I see myself doing Plus, 7 and F in the future. Hope they're worth it.

The only one of my favorite directors that doesn't have any obvious weak link in their filmography seems to be Takahata.
I'd say Hotaru no Haka but that's when compared to his other works.
@TRC_Randy

I've only see the original Macross from the 80s, Macross Plus and Macross F, all of which were pretty good but Plus was definitely my favorite. Oh, also 'Do you Remember Love?' which is one of my favorite franchise movies, I would also recommend that one. It's much more than just your average recap movie.
I probably regret this post by now.

Bebop was good not because of Watanabe but because of the team and studio behind it.

Americans LOVE this "great man" theory when it comes to namedropping but it's most likely because they literally only know a director or mangaka for a series and don't know how anime works beyond that.

There's a reason Watanabe has had decades of flops and all of the advertising for Lazarus is:

"GUYS REMEMBER BEBOP LOL XD"

Honestly half of the appeal of Cowboy Bebop for me was actually the OST for the Anime. If the OST was any different, I don't think I would have liked it as much even back when it 1st aired on Cartoon Network's Adult Swim in the West.

It's this incredibly dumb take over and over again, guys.

The guy MADE Bebop and Champloo. And it's not like everything else he did was trash. It was just not Bebop or Samurai Champloo. Nothing he ever did was bad.
What the actual fk does he have to do to impress you? It's just not enough for you that he gave you these timeless two classics, is it? xD

If Leonardo Da Vinci had ONLY done the Mona Lisa that would've been fine.
Cut the guy some slack. It's hard to please the MaL-Dudes, on here, that will steal his work online and then bitch about it 😅

the idea is that a director is the most influential man in the studio to the quality of the product not bcoz "oh we only know one man and it's the director".

And I'm not American.

well, can't argue with an abnormal who's dropped more than he's completed.

Besides Cowboy Bebop and Samurai Champloo do you think Shinichirou Watanabe has ever reached that same height at any other point in his career?

I don't think so, Space Dandy was fun though.

Will his next work Lazarus change sth in his track record? Are you looking forward to it? If so, what expectations do you have?

Lazarus looks pretty good in terms of technical aspect, but that's it. Regarding the story and characters, I'll hold my judgement until the show airs. Let's wait and see.

How would you rank all of his works that you've watched?

Cowboy Bebop > Samurai Champloo > Space Dandy > Sakamichi no Apollon > Zankyou no Terror = Carole & Tuesday

I think Sakamichi no Apollon was his best work, simply due to him working on something outside of sci-fi or history.

But after that Space Dandy for how vibrant and adventurous that show was.

I picked Kids on the Slope despite it not being an original Watanabe creation. Space*Dandy doesn't really appeal to me much, though I do like QT and there were some pretty good episodes.
"Molly Ringwald" out right now - check my Linktree!

As good as Bebop? No, but I think Zankyou no terror is his clear second best work.

Carole and Tuesday seems like the best of that bunch. Also that seems like a short list, I'm pretty sure he created other stuff like Excel Saga at least, the Nabeshin character was basically him.

@Kruszer

You are confusing two different Watanabes.

@JoeChip Nani? You're right they're two different people with two extremely similar sounding names. My mind is blown...
