The Rurouni Kenshin: Meiji Kenkaku Romantan - Kyoto Douran (Rurouni Kenshin: Kyoto Disturbance) special stage at AnimeJapan 2025 announced a third season on Saturday, revealing an announcement promo.

Produced by LIDENFILMS, the 24-episode first season premiered on the Fuji TV's noitaminA programming block in Summer 2023. The second season began airing on October 9. Crunchyroll simulcast the seasons with subtitles and subsequently began streaming an English dub.

The television anime adapts Nobuhiro Watsuki's historical drama manga, which ran in Weekly Shounen Jump from 1994 to 1999. Watsuki and his wife Kaoru Kurosaki launched the Hokkaido-hen (Hokkaido Arc) sequel manga in Jump SQ. in November 2016. Shueisha published the ninth volume in November 2023.

The original anime series by Studio Deen and Gallop aired in 94 episodes from 1996 to 1998. Aniplex released a four-episode OVA the following year that served as a prequel to the television anime, followed by a two-episode sequel OVA in 2002.

No date yet of when this will air? Most likely sometime in 2026. Assuming this will be 2 cours, this should adapt the rest of the Kyoto arc, and probably the first few episodes of the Jinchu arc (finally). It's safe to say that this will be a complete adaptation eventually, and that a season 4 will definitely happen.

@wildhood I'm sorry, but how many arcs were adapted in the first season of the new anime?

@wildhood So, at the moment we have a formal adaptation of two arcs in three seasons at the expense of one in the first and the second in the next two?

@RobertBobert Yes. The second season was more of the second arc, and the third season will be the rest of the second arc and will probably start adapting the third arc halfway through the third season.

@wildhood I just find it a little hard to believe that it would take them 2 cours to fight Shishio and his minions after all this.

I'm glad they're not rushing through this adaption, 100+ chapters would have been too much for one season.
