Production company Warner Bros. Japan announced an anime adaptation of Hiroshi Sakurazaka's All You Need is Kill light novel on Thursday. The company also opened an official website, revealing the main staff, teaser visual (pictured), and a teaser trailer.

Kenichirou Akimoto (Kaijuu no Kodomo CG director) is directing the anime at Studio 4°C. The movie will reconstruct the story from a different angle than the novel and the Hollywood live-action movie.

Shueisha published the original light novel under its Super Dash Bunko in December 2004, featuring illustrations by Yoshitoshi ABe (Texhnolyze). VIZ Media published the novel in English in July 2009.

Takeshi Obata (Death Note) drew a manga adaptation which was serialized on Young Jump magazine from January to May 2014. Shueisha published both volumes in June 2014.

The Hollywood live-action movie adaptation, Edge of Tomorrow, opened in theaters in May 2014, directed by Doug Liman (The Bourne Identity) and starring Tom Cruise.

Synopsis
After an unidentified plant from outer space invasion, Rita finds herself trapped in a time loop, forced to relive the same day over and over again. With each loop, she learns. She fights. Her memories and experiences sharpen her skills, turning her into a formidable warrior. Yet, the endless cycle of death and solitude begins to wear her down. Then, she meets Keiji. "I've been repeating this day too," he says. Two lost souls, trapped in an endless war. Could their meeting change fate? (Source: Warner Bros. Japan)

Edge of Tomorrow was a very enjoyable film. I can't wait to see how the LN gets adapted in anime form. The PV looks very promising.

I don't think they are adapting the LN, and are likely to be going with an anime orignal route

From what I've read online, they are adapting the LN, but they are presenting the anime as seen from Rita's POV.

@M-T_S They can take liberties like that and change it to suit their style. I'm sure that they consulted the author as well about this and got his approval. As long as they follow the story and plotline, then they're still adapting the LN. We'll just have to wait and see how it turns out.

It has a unique look and maybe pretty high quality. And I like what little I've seen of Studio 4°C (Kaijuu no Kodomo is just stunning), so very interested.

@wildhood This is a fairly well-known title with a big Hollywood adaptation. The world won't end tomorrow, someday your favorite titles will get an adaptation too.

@deg Maybe it will run parallel with the LN and maybe tie back into the main story at some point through its runtime, except Keiji is the veteran fighter. So maybe the roles are reversed.

Been thinking of rereading the LN sometime, guess I'll follow it up with this when it comes out.

Kinda funny that between all the adaptations Edge of Tomorrow has the closest mimic design to what I pictured from reading the LN.

what is that charadesign!?... not a fan of it at all. obata and ABe designs look way better. the color design is also interesting.

also hope that the director pulls thru as there isn't much "directorial work" in his profile

@EcchiGodMamster studio 4c always have ugly character designs stereotypes but for me its just simple character designs to speed up drawings and production and not burden animators much

When you have Obata and ABe ready to use but stick to the usual 4c shitty edgy design instead 💀

Big news for sci-fi and anime fans! Studio 4°C is officially adapting All You Need is Kill into an anime movie. This legendary light novel, written by Hiroshi Sakurazaka, is the same story that inspired the Hollywood film Edge of Tomorrow starring Tom Cruise.

What We Know So Far
Studio 4°C (Tekkonkinkreet, Children of the Sea) is handling the adaptation.
The movie is titled "All You Need is Kill: CHAOS FILM", set for a 2025 release.
Expect fluid animation, deep storytelling, and intense battle sequences.
Fans are curious about how closely the anime will stick to the original light novel compared to Edge of Tomorrow.
Discussion Points
💬 Will Studio 4°C do justice to the novel’s gritty, time-loop action?
🎬 How do you feel about the Edge of Tomorrow comparison—did it miss the mark or capture the essence?
📖 Would you rather see a faithful adaptation or a fresh take?

I've written a full breakdown of the announcement, including production details and expectations. Check it out here: Otaku Orbit Blog

It is quite the plot twist that we went from Obata to this wild 4°C thing, but I'm in for the ride :)

I'll watch, but this is incredibly disappointing...
I first read the manga. Never read the novel, and loved the movie adaptation.

I was about to say "Finally!"
But this character design is so jarring. I hate it.
Although, if we get a sequel and better art, in the meantime, the story of Rita first is cool.
