As my first ever 10/10 anime, Madoka Magica still stands out for me to this day. So sure, I’d pick that to be #1.

@Ryuseishun certainly in the top three at least. Urobuchi trifactor should reign supreme

I think that Frieren is fine where it is. I just think it is simply the most flawless anime I've ever seen where I can't actually point out to a single nitpick (the pacing is probably the best I've ever seen, the animation is absurd, the storytelling and worldbuilding are simply elite, the characters are insanely memorable, the soundtrack is amazing, etc.).
But apart from it the only other animes that makes sense to me are One Piece or Steins;Gate. The problem is that they do have some noticeable kind of indisputable flaws.
One Piece is in my opinion the best story ever told, but some arcs are much better than other (it doesn't have the greatest consistency overall) and mainly because of Toei it has some putrid pacing that can only be fixed by watching One Pace, by reading the manga or by enduring the 1000+ episodes. Steins;Gate first half is quite simply worse than the second part of the story and the kind of slice of life vibe that the anime gives in the first 10 to 11 episodes is not for everyone.
I don't think that Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood deserves the #1 tbh because I simply view it as a worse Frieren (and I know this comment will piss off some people but I don't really care). Like, yes, I don't really see any noticeable flaws in FMAB but it never reaches imo the upper levels of peaks that a lot of other shows do. Like while Frieren for me is a constant 9.5 or 10 experience, FMAB is like a constante 8 to 8.5. Like it is a great story but I never felt a true emotional connection formed between me and the show. Nevertheless it is an amazing show with some great writing.

Kenshin Trust and Betrayal should retake #1. It's great at everything and has a straightforward narrative to make things easier on newer watchers. Although it is my personal favorite of all-time, that is just by coincidence as I would not say that my 2nd and 3rd favorites should be top 5 as they have fairly niche appeal that could be offputting to mainstream viewership.

FMAB has something for everyone. Great writing, characters, soundtrack and artistic style. Memorable fights, charming comedy and gut wrenching tragedy. Also, both the sub and dub are great. One of the few shows that I prefer dub, actually.

Vinland Saga S2. It changed me as a person. It's #1 for me. Also Legend of Galactic Heroes should be top 10.

Many anime movies need to be higher.

Clannad After Story. I can't say really much without spoiling, but goddamn...me and many others found it to be a crazy tearjerker. Top 20 is respectable though

I think I would pick either ::

    Paprika

    OR

    Spirited Away

just cause I think both are a good general depiction of what this medium has to offer
I think they represent what anime is and can become

Tough question, IMO it should definitely be some valued and generally popular anime, preferably finished and versatile... I can't remember all the anime I've watched right now and choose one based on in-depth analysis, but if I had to choose right now with a gun to my head, I would choose FMAB

It was interesting when Gintama was at the top for a little while or at least close to it. I can't remember if it was #1, I feel like I remember it was for a short bit. Since watching it requires you have a good amount of knowledge of anime and Japanese culture to get the jokes and it being a parody and all. It's not beginner friendly, unlike FMAB. So it's completely on the other side of things. It also starts out so ridiculous and it even took me nearly 100 episodes for it to grow on me, and then when it did get to any serious arcs and moments between all the silliness, it just elevates these serious moments and becomes really good.

So I think for those who watched a lot of anime, it's one for long time fans to maybe appreciate. I guess that'd be gate keeping though to say this, and that's likely why it dropped in rating over time, since it's less accessible and subjective in humor.

But for me personally, I think One Piece is the best, yet again, this is another long one and isn't as easily accessible due to its length.

I think something that represents great anime as a whole deserves to be at the top, Freiern wouldn't be my first choice especially since I don't care for it. Fullmetal Alchemist Brotherhood feels like an apt choice considering its legendary status and how it actually represents almost everything good about the medium. Other choices that I think would be pretty fitting too would be Steins;Gate or Hunter x Hunter, Monster maybe too.

So you're just asking what everyones favorite anime is and this has nothing to do with Frieren. As a side note, you don't have to like Frieren to understand why it might be #1. I don't like something just because other people do, with that said Frieren is really good though.

I can feel like a different anime should be #1, but thankfully we aren't just clones of each other and each other and #1 is what it is.

Natsume's book of friends.

It's such comfy fluff show. The Shinto aspects are well researched. It isn't bogged down by romance or over the top drama. Probably a bit too slow and episodic for some people though which is why it isn't higher

Frieren is not my favorite series, but it really deserves to be the number one. It might not be my or your favorite story, but if you choose to watch it analytically, then there is no competition.

FMA & FMAB are honestly mid and, in my humble opinion, belong way below the top ten. Certainly below AOT, S;G, Death Note, DB, Eva, Cowboy Bebop, One Piece, Rurouni Kenshin, Sailor Moon, HunterXHunter, Golden Boy, etc.

My very personal choice would be Isekai Ojisan, but I know that it is niche.

Gurren Lagann, on the other hand, is very near "social" perfection:
- it has a mainstream charm;
- you do not need tons of previous experience;
- it has beautiful animation, appealing music and the job of the VAs is excellent;
- the "lessons" are deep without being transmitted in an overly serious manner;
- you do not need a lot of time to watch and enjoy it.

So I would vote for Gurren Lagann in a parallel universe without Frieren.

You could name it like that or interpret it however you want, but claiming openly that someone is stupid for having preferences that not match yours - as you did quoting MogKnight above - is a little bit too much, especially if you expect social interaction without mods calling you out.
I am no moralist and totally understand where you do come from - it is a good thing to be passionate about something - but being able to differentiate how is ok to classify others in the open is an important skill - and you know it.

And, coming back to my assertion, I stand for what I have written there. It sounds like something a fanboy would say, and it actually is. Of course I am fan, not a huge one because my most favorite stuff is very specific, but there is no way you or anybody else could expect "total objectivity" - whatever that is - from a matter of taste. But there are some objective pointers.
For instance:
- the quality of the animation considering the year of production (tell me if queen bee does animation at the same level as t-rex);
- the quality of the VAs;
and so on.

Let me make it clear about my MogKnight post , the reason why I called him stupid was not because "his preference did not match mine" but because he made that comment without actually reading what I CLEARLY STATED in my opening post and just went on with his Frieren fanboyism . Was I rude to use the word stupid, maybe, but I like to be brutally honest.
