The Dengeki Bunko New Year Super Appreciation Winter Festival Online 2025 announced a television anime adaptation of Kazuma Kamachi's Toaru Anbu no Item (A Certain Dark Side's Item) spin-off light novel on Monday. The event also unveiled the main cast.

Cast
Shizuri Mugino: Ami Koshimizu (RWBY: Hyousetsu Teikoku)
Rikou Takitsubo: Aya Suzaki (Sidonia no Kishi)
Frenda Seivelun: Maaya Uchida (Musaigen no Phantom World)
Saiai Kinuhata: Chinatsu Akasaki (Chuunibyou demo Koi ga Shitai!)

Kamachi began penning the spin-off light novel under the Dengeki Bunko imprint in March 2023, featuring illustrations by Nilitsu (Shokei Shoujo no Virgin Road). Kadokawa published the third volume on June 7 last year, with the fourth volume planned for a March 7 release.

Dengeki Daioh began serializing a manga adaptation by strelka (Hinowa ga Yuku!) in October 2023. Kadokawa released the first volume in June 2024.

Synopsis
In Academy City, where supernatural abilities are part of everyday science, the city's peace is upheld by an unseen force—the dark side. Among the covert operatives is ITEM, a four-member elite unit. With Rikou Takitsubo's tracking abilities, Frenda Seivelun's explosive expertise, Saiai Kinuhata's impenetrable defense, and Shizuri Mugino's overwhelming power as one of Academy City's seven Level 5 espers, they navigate the city's underbelly, taking on secret missions that never make the headlines.

As their latest assignment unfolds, the team moves with precision, unaware that their actions are setting the stage for a tragedy that will test their bonds of trust, friendship, and survival in the unforgiving darkness of Academy City.

I was really worried about the disappearance of the Dengeki anime. But I did not think that the first news from them would imply desperate attempts to divert attention from the index using All-Female Spin-offs.

Glad a spin-off gets an anime adaptation. More Frenda !

Hopefully, Astral Buddy and Mental Out will also have an anime one day.

@Zoshlog If everything will continue at this pace, then wait simultaneously with the 5-6th season of Railgun and 2-3 seasons of NT, LMAO.

I didn't know this series existed or that it was popular enough to warrant an anime.

Now this was an announcement I wasn't expecting.

I have a feeling that this might end up as popular as the Accelerator spinoff anime.

And considering the lack of an Index NT anime announcement is rather disappointing.

Spin-Off? Is this a part of the Toaru franchise? This looks interesting, but I haven't watched any of the other Toaru titles yet. If so, I'd rather not watched it before the other titles (since watching franchises in broadcast order was always in my rule).

Okay, I’m interested. J.C. Staff have done Index and Railgun projects side-by-side, so I’ve confidence the quality of Railgun won’t be too affected lol.

It's nice to see more Toaru series getting anime adaptations. I think, now it's a question of time when manga spin-off about Shokuhou Misaki will get anime./

The fact that this spin-off receive an anime adaptation before Astral Buddy or even Dark Matter (Let alone Index NT) is quite something else lol

Don't worry, this spin-off took place like a one whole year before Index and Railgun lol.

@MahiaErebeaNegi ah thanks for that timeline exposition. i knew a whole shit-ton went down with ITEM in RG/Index so now i get to see the gals 'in their prime' BEFORE even meeting Railgun? which if i'm not mistaken RG started her manga storyline 6-9 months before she ever met Touma? i've seen all the anime so far but trying to pick up sources? nope, not happening. :)

general reply this time. Crunchyroll's article wasn't even slightly this detailed, thanks for padding things out. but they did mention there are ONLY FOUR Light Novels out for ITEM right now. did Crunchy get that right? so the ITEM (by standard LN->Anime conversions) anime will only have 12 episodes? i mean four books is pretty close to the max needed for 12 eps... we know Railgun's next anime is in the pipeline at JC Staff... but why haven't they joined in with the ITEM announcement? they've been busier than hell these past few years cranking out their highest number of anime in one year ever... in '24 i think it was?

so, y'all think Railgun S4 and ITEM are The Big Yen Guys' efforts at funding new 'A Certain...' universe anime titles to CATCH UP FINALLY with Index Light Novel Series 1 Three Anime Seasons? before pushing out Index LN Series 2 anime finally? Railgun's S2 and S3 totally skipped the Summer Break Story Arc, and didn't even approach WW3 at the end of Index LN Series1...

well whatever happens... i hope everything turns out just as good or better than JC Staff's previous 'A Certain...' universe titles. :D
