I think this anime should’ve watched by more people, its so good. As a Yuri on Ice lover, this is so cool! Am I wrong?

Yeeah, it's exciting that we now have a sports anime besides Yuri on Ice for figure skating!

So far it is great, so I will try to recommend it to my friends.

Hopefully, more people will notice it as well 👍

That’s MAL for you, good anime get low ratings, while so called “popular” (not that good) anime get high ratings.

Sometimes there are popular anime that are also good, but I’m not talking about those.

This anime is one of the best so far this season, but it is not getting the attention and praise it should have.

Plus the Sub & Dub are both good, but that brings all the “Dub is always bad” people on to the scene, and that is sad.
Note: I don’t lazily watch 3-5 episodes, biasedly compare to other anime, or unfairly judge by surface level similarities. With every anime I start, I watch the entire series, both Japanese Sub & English Dub, then judge each anime based on what they present, to give an honest and fair rating.

Is that you mocking me or agreeing with me?

An honest question, just couldn’t tell. 😅

Oh I'm agreeing with you 100%. I'd also like to add the tragedy of some amazing series from manga and LN not getting proper adaptions for one reason or another and then getting raked by a shit community.

It's possible that there's no buzz around it because it's stuck on Hulu/Disney+.

But it's definitely strange. It's the 30th (!) most popular show on the seasonal list, sorted by popularity. That's not even counting the continuing shows.

An underdog sports/performance story is a pretty solid premise. It's got decent art and animation. The manga is somewhat-known (I may be wrong about this, but even I've heard of it).

I'd understand if people weren't feeling it, but I don't understand how they're not even checking it out...

It's a recurring problem with female led shows not getting taken seriously. They pretty much get written off as "Cute Girls Doing Cute Things" and that's it. So unless you have that market instantly cornered then you're pretty much screwed. It being done by ENGI also doesn't help since while they're killing it so far, they're reputation is pretty much in the toilet so most people will pass because of that.

It's crazy an anime that writes kids acting like actual kids is getting the cold shoulder when it is very faithful to the sport in question. I'm shocked it has an English dub.(It's a pretty good one.).

Is this still a problem, I wonder...

I think people by now are used to seeing girls working their butts off: Hibike! Euphonium, Chihayafuru, Oshi no Ko... Not to mention a lot of villainess/reincarnation shows being reasonably popular. We also regularly get female idol shows, like Love Live, no?

As far as straight-up shoujo, we've had Yubisaki to Renren pop off last year (6th most popular of Winter 2024).

Now that I think about it, this show might have been more popular if the protagonist was a teenage girl, instead of a kid...

In Japan very much so. In the West, it's much more of a mixed bag at times. Sometimes one will take off and break with more mainstream audiences, but not quite as hard as more standard shounen/seinen stuff especially action. Them being kids and not teens is likely part of it yeah.

@doomrider7 Kind of hard to add fujo bait when the main lead is a kid not even in sixth grade late. I do agree there is a bit of glass ceiling as a lot of people in the anime space are kind of fanservice capture a bit. I don't know how we got here but when I see comments like this, "Sonic Frontiers is only worth playing because it has a loli in it." I am becoming worried about the anime and video game space. Also, yes someone on Twitter told me Sonic Frontiers is only interesting because Sage, the new character, was a loli in his eyes despite her not being a loli or fucking human.

i read that in Japan it is actually the biggest boost on manga sales, comparatively, bigger than the boost sakamoto days is receveing at least.

it may not be popular on the internet but being comercially successful in Japan is a victory nonetheless

Easily one of my favorite series of the season. I'm watching it on Hulu (I was pleasantly surprised to see it's on there)
You can buy lossless digital music from your favorite Japanese artists on https://ototoy.jp/.
The songs are all DRM-free and you can re-download your purchased albums as you wish.
Show your support to your favorite artist if you can!
ps. if you are looking for Japanese albums, you have to search it in Japanese (not romaji). Just copy and paste the name.

Manga fans are saying its a bad adaptation.

It's got a lot bringing it down but it's been pretty great so far.

It’s not that it’s a bad adaptation, it’s that the manga I believe to be impossible to do in anime, it’s paced very well right now about 1 chapter per episode which is usually bad but Medalist has some rlly long chapters. I will say as someone who has been reading this manga for a long time, I was scared this would be a lot worse. I would recommend starting the manga from ch1 as it is my fav all time but the anime is good enough so far. It just lacks a lot of the emotion from the manga.

I'd assume people simply look at the poster and be like "Anime about a little girl skating? BOOORING!". Without giving the show a chance whatsoever. There are also those who catch glimpse of CGI (in the OP for instance) and start having convulsions, thus insta skip.

@perseii Hurting its popularity a bit is probably a lack of bringing over source readers – which is what you hope for when adapting a popular manga. I know several people who love the manga but aren't watching the anime because they know ENGI won't elevate the material and will just be pumping out an inferior product to the one they're already reading.

This is the truest statement here. People are thinking too deeply. People see sport and a niche sport at that and a kid = skip

There is a reasonable chance that it would receive a significant amount more recognition and engagement, at least within anime enthusiast communities among anime-watching regulars, if the "subtitles" (actual dubtitles and closed-captioning scripts) weren't being repurposed and attempted to be passed off as subtitles, and therefore what they're calling the official subtitles, which aren't actual purpose-made subtitles, being abysmal.

I've just been torrenting and watching a fansubbed version, but how many people aren't going to bother or don't even know about that as a viable option? This combination of laziness and greed on the part of the company responsible for its licensing and distribution (Disney in the U.S., correct?) and responsible for English translation is to blame for harming its accessibility for people who don't want to watch shows where what they're reading goes directly against what they're hearing.

Medalist anime is scored 7.99 on MAL right now. If you haven't scored it yet, please put in the good work to make up for that missing last percentile!
Reaching or exceeding 8/10 score is considered landmark for being a good anime and that would make the series visible to a lot more visitors!

This manga is serialized in a magazine in the "Seinen" genre.
And it was highly acclaimed to the extent that it won first place in the "Next Manga Award" 2022, chosen by Japanese manga readers.

Incidentally, "Freelen" won third place in the 2021Award.

Without Crunchyroll presence, Medalist can't reach wider audiences of casual anime consumer overseas. May hit >8.5 MAL score by season's end, but will only have a tiny fraction of western viewers compared to CR-based shows. Girls Ice Cry repeating all over again?
