Publishing company Kodansha announced on Thursday that Shuuichi Shigeno's MF Ghost manga is ending in six chapters. The 12th issue of Weekly Young Magazine will publish the final chapter on February 17, concluding its nearly seven and a half year-run.

Shigeno began serializing the racing sports manga in Weekly Young Magazine in September 2017, approximately four years after ending Initial D. Kodansha published the 21st volume on October 4, with the 22nd volume going on sale on February 6. MF Ghost has a cumulative 5 million copies of its volumes in circulation.

Kodansha USA licensed the manga for digital release in English and published the 19th volume on July 9 last year. The 20th volume is scheduled for a January 21 release.

Felix Film adapted the manga into two 12-episode anime seasons in Fall 2023 and Fall 2024. Crunchyroll simulcast both seasons with subtitles and dubs in multiple languages. A third season is currently in production.

Synopsis
By the 2020s, cars with internal combustion engines have largely been phased out, replaced by self-driving electric and fuel cell vehicles instead. Though these fossil fuel-running cars are at risk of disappearing completely, a dedicated group in Japan known as the MFG strives to maintain interest in them through road races streamed online. With 10 billion yen at stake and more than three hundred drivers competing, only the "Godly Fifteen"—the top 15 racers in the circuit—have a chance at advancing and taking the coveted prize.

Fresh off a plane from England, 19-year-old Kanata Rivington is eager to take on the fourth installment of the MFG competition. Trained at an elite driving school in his home country, the half-Japanese driver vies for the competition's top spot in his hand-me-down Toyota 86 GT. Despite the disadvantages that come with a dated car, the newcomer is determined to become one of this year's Godly Fifteen.

Kanata adopts his father's last name, taking on the moniker "Kanata Katagiri." Conquering the Japanese racing circuit is only a stepping stone towards his real goal: discovering the whereabouts of his missing father. [Written by MAL Rewrite]

@deg It’s somehow too quick conclusion for a sequel to a cult work, which gets new seasons like hot cakes.

Had a good run. It'd be nice if the anime can reach the ending now.

Oh, it will be much shorter than I was expecting, but at least now I know that I will see the ending of the anime in my lifetime!

Now the question is, are we going to get another Shigeno Shuuichi rom-car manga?

@Dudi4PoLFr Is the original Initial D much longer? I'm now on the first season after the film and it seems that I still have 50 episodes until the finale.

@RobertBobert Manga-wise, Initial D has 721 chapters and MFG has currently 253, so it will end at 259. Barely 1/3 of ID, but you need to take into consideration that they cut a lot from the ID manga when making the anime, especially the things that would happen outside the racing. While MFG is adapting much closer to the source manga.

If I remember correctly at the end of MFG saison 2 we are around chapter 116 so around the the half of whole story.

@Dudi4PoLFr Is this why the MFG adaptation feels like a much more alive and cohesive story, where the characters live their lives without moving from one race to another? Because the anime ID cut out a lot of SoL moments?

@RobertBobert Well, I don't want to spoil you because I would highly recommend reading the manga, but yes, there is a lot of SoL content that shows what is 'behind' each of the main drivers. Theirs modifications, targets and, well... Dreams. In the anime, they shortened this to 'racer pride,' and racing is everything.

@Dudi4PoLFr Maybe I'm just not exactly their target audience, but after the first two seasons I was under the impression that 90% of the story was cars and racing, especially when you compare the simplicity of the character designs to the car theme.
