It's not "Nisio's novels on Monogatari series"; it's "Nisio's Monogatari novel series" that was adapted into the anime. Nisio Isin is a celebrated author in Japan. Just look up his bibliography and your mind will blown by just how many books he has written throughout his career. His stories spans many different genres, so every one has their own favorite Nisio Isin book.

And everyone points at the ecchi in Bakemonogatari, but that's not all. Everything about this story is very out there. This was translated very well into the anime adaptation, the animators decided to go with a surreal style and didn't censor anything out of respect.

Also, the reason I don't like to call it "Monogatari" series because; 物語 (monogatari) means "story; tale". So calling it the "Monogatari series" is like saying "the story series". Outside of Japan it's an exotic term so it works. But I like to call it Bakemonogatari series, that title literally means "Tales of Monsters" or "Tales of Supernaturals".
It's plain English over in this region, so that's why I called it this way. But I get what you mean. I've a few translated novels and only quarter way through Kizumonogatari (I'm a very slow reader lol), Bakemonogatari is officially translated as "Monster Tale" rather than "Tales of Monsters". So I highly doubted they'll go for "Tales of...." in translation. After all, there is already a "Tales of..." video game franchise. Also, "Monogatari" is a franchise name at this point, so even though it sounds odd in English after translating it, but that's what they went with - "Monogatari Series". All the sequels/prequels have different titles, so the novels have "Tale" at the end of the title.

As for the anime, I agree. Shaft has this very unique art and animation style that is not seen as much from other studios and it works for the Monogatari Series.

Ah I remember this one, cute girls making pottery. Pity both seasons were really short :/

Nice pick. It's a pretty underrated CGDCT.
Yep, a lot of these short CGDCT anime shows are underrated. I guess many users bash on shorter anime and rate high on mainstream stuff.

First things first, it's quite hard to define what's "lesser-known". But it's not entirely subjective. If someone dares tell me Naruto is lesser known, I will kindly ask them to shut the F up.

I personally describe it as shows and movies that were never mainstream. One of my personal favorite is Bakemonogatari or simply Monogatari series. It's an incredible series that isn't anywhere as popular as the mainstream series. Even people who aren't otaku might've watched One Piece. But they most probably have never heard of Bakemonogatari.

And this is where the line gets a bit blurry. Would you consider Sword Art Online a lesser known anime? I wouldn't, because it was wildly popular and definitely mainstream at one point. But one could argue it was never as popular as the "big ones".

Regardless, I wanted to talk about either hidden or forgotten gems; or even shows and movies that weren't very good but you personally liked it and remembered it.

Hidden gems of anime:

- Buddy Daddies
- Cool Doji Danshi
- Gankutsuou
- Given
- Migi to Dali
- Orange
- Planetes
- Run With The Wind
- Outlaw Star
- Shiki
- Tada-kun wa Koi wo Shinai
- Taisho Otome Otogibanashi
- Whistle!
- Moriarty The Patriot
- Orb: On The Movements Of The Earth

Forgotten gems of anime (stuff that was popular enough to get merch when i was a kid but is mostly forgotten outside japan now):

- Ashita no Nadja
- Let's & Go
- Lady Georgie
- Kirarin Revolution
- Zatch Bell!

@JoeChip I am sorry but both Death Note and Cowboy Bebop seem to too popular to be considered "lesser known". I remember a few years ago Death Note was practically everywhere.

And Cowboy Bebop is an absolute classic and honestly one of the icons in history. It's popular among all kinds of people besides otaku.
@Captain-577

Tell me you can't detect sarcasm without telling me you can't detect sarcasm. And you pretty much overrate Cowboy Bebop's importance.

Pandora hearts a warped version of Alice in wonderland. Involving dimensional demons. Really cool read the manga as well.

Yozakura quartet a slice of life action. (Not the 2000s one that one is bad and doesn't follow the manga at all. The 2010s ones are what I'm referring to
)

It's got some of the best combat animation I've seen for a while also the story is both upbeat with a melancholic vibe to it. Where the yokai world and human world are slowly merging together.

Same artist of durararas wrote the manga.

@Captain-577 anyone who thinks cowboy beep bop is lesser known is either new to anime or is actually trolling.

For anime, probably GaoGaiGar? I know it's pretty huge in mecha circles, but I don't think many people outside of that have given it much of a shot.

I have a bunch of niche manga that I really like, though...

Right in your first line and sentence, you hit the nail on the head as that has always been my problem in knowing exactly how to answer these questions on forum such as MAL. There is "lesser known" among the general public which either doesn't watch anime at all or may have only seen a few across years, and then there is "lesser known" among seasoned anime watchers and dedicated anime communities online like MAL. The latter is a whole different category.

Before I began watching anime in 2016, I, like most non-anime watchers, was supremely ignorant to the medium and had only seen a handful of Ghibli films (which I basically just considered as "animated foreign films" at the time, like watching a French or Iranian cartoon, and didn't even think of it as watching "anime"), some of the original Pokemon series as an elementary school-aged kid, and a few episodes of Dragonball Z. At that time, I thought all anime was either Pokemon or Digimon-style fighting monster/creature shows based on video games and trading card games, martial arts, or superhero shows (basically battle shounen, even though I didn't know that term then). I hadn't heard of 99.9%+ of anime, and so virtually anything would have been "lesser known" to my ears and mind in that state.

But since it's always somewhat subjective and there is never a clear-cut way to answer based on some hard science or objective mathematical calculation or anything like that, I guess for the purposes of this thread topic I'll just mention those among my favorites I consider probably the most obscure/lesser known even within regular anime watcher communities (at least, as of the present year - all would have been at least somewhat more known closer to when they came out in that year or within the next few years after then I imagine they are now):

- Koi Kaze
- Beatless
- Kaiba
- Aishiteruze Baby
- Akage no Anne
- Hyouge Mono
- Aku no Hana
- Gallery Fake
- Kodomo no Jikan
- Dennou Coil
- Petshop of Horrors
- Sora no Woto
- Centaur no Nayami
- Earth Maiden Arjuna
- Tenpou Ibun Ayakashi Ayashi
- Subete ga F ni Naru
- Ie Naki Ko Remy (1996)
- Mujin Wakusei Survive
- Hakumei to Mikochi
- Ikoku Meiro no Croisée the Animation
- Saraiya Goyou
- Beautiful Bones - Sakurako's Investigation
- Time Travel Shoujo: Mari Waka to 8-nin no Kagakusha-tachi
- Fune wo Amu
- Tokyo Magnitude 8.0
- Zettai Shounen
- Mars Red
- Kokoro Toshokan
- Princess Principal
- Urasekai Picnic
- Junketsu no Maria

@Timeline_man Things would go absolutely crazy with manga, just because there's so much more. People outside of Japan barely have much idea what the Manga industry is really like. That's because they have only seen selected titles that make it out of Japan.

Would be more of the Chines once, like Battle through the heavem's, Perfect World, Soul Land, Tales of demons and gods etc.
Most people here would see that it's chines and just run away from the Anime.

Magical Circle Guru-Guru
It's consistently funny, it frequently made me laugh out loud. A lot of references to old JRPG games. Childish artstyle with occasional uncomfortable ecchi. The two leads are adorable. Complete story.

Healer Girl
https://redd.it/u78x2o , Every episode has between 1 and 3 songs, its like a musical and I am a big fan of it.

Selector Infected WIXOSS
Its about girls who fight battles to have their wish granted. The game rules are barely explained, they focus more on the characterization of those desperate enough to play this cursed game.

Baby Steps
I can't help but think how a lot of Isekai shows would improve immensely if they had a protagonist like Eichiro. Somebody who trains hard, tries something new when he is in trouble, fails then trains at the new strategy for weeks till he masters it.
It shows the numerous hours spent training, the gradual improvement & the different strategies and techniques needed to win matches.

@mo_lave Or rather, it wouldn't have been as much well known if not for Shinkai's recent popularity. Lot of people come across Shinkai's earlier works after watching Your Name and Weathering with You.

A better example would be Voices of a Distant Star, one of Shinkai's earliest short films.

welp, after sorting my list by popularity, I can safly say, the least popular show that I rated at least a 7 or higher (that isn't a special or ova of a larger series) is...
Kigurumikku V3 A charming little 3episode ONA series that came out in 2009, about girls (Magical?) saving the city. The episodes were only 11 minutes long, but I enjoyed it. It has a whopping 2563 members, ranked #11198 in popularity.

Monogatari series is plenty popular. It may not be as popular as the most mainstream anime, but it's one of those cult classics with a decent following.

Kuuchuu Buranko on the other hand, nobody seems to know about it, and it's one of my favorite.

Hikaru no Go is my top 3 favorite, it was decently popular back when it was airing, but it's ranked #1708 in popularity on MAL. I wouldn't say this is unpopular though, it's popular enough to get a great live action adaptation 5 years ago, and the main theme song has a Japanese, Chinese and Korean cover, they seem to love this.

I haven’t watched it in over 10 years, but the one anime I know that so few people have ever watched but has never ever left my memory, Miss Monochrome The Animation, and its succeeding two other seasons.

Obsessed with Hatsune Miku as a kid (arguably still am), I tried to find the closest substitute I could and voila, “Welcome back, Hatsune Miku”. It’s goofy and makes no sense whatsoever, but somehow I remember it, I love it.
