First things first, it's quite hard to define what's "lesser-known". But it's not entirely subjective. If someone dares tell me Naruto is lesser known, I will kindly ask them to shut the F up. I personally describe it as shows and movies that were never mainstream. One of my personal favorite is Bakemonogatari or simply Monogatari series. It's an incredible series that isn't anywhere as popular as the mainstream series. Even people who aren't otaku might've watched One Piece. But they most probably have never heard of Bakemonogatari. And this is where the line gets a bit blurry. Would you consider Sword Art Online a lesser known anime? I wouldn't, because it was wildly popular and definitely mainstream at one point. But one could argue it was never as popular as the "big ones". Regardless, I wanted to talk about either hidden or forgotten gems; or even shows and movies that weren't very good but you personally liked it and remembered it. |

@Serafos I have never heard of that one. But it could be because I know nothing of Mahou Shoujo / Magical Girls besides Sailor Moon. |

What might fit it's something like Ryuuou no Oshigoto, Ben-To or Tenshi no 3P. You can check my favorite if you find some that fit though I don't consider lesser known stuff like Steins;Gate,No Game No Life or Hibike Euphonium. |

The thing about "mainstream" is that, it can be judged in two ways based on where it's been discussed. If it's in real life and you are in a region where anime is really popular, then Monogatari Series and SAO along with other titles that aren't as popular as the Big Three (Naruto, One Piece and Bleach) are still being heard of by tons of people in the community. Of course, if you are Japan...you know the answer to that already without me typing anything! xD But if it's like me in a tiny country in Europe dominated by drinking and sports culture, anime is a hit or miss. So majority will go for the Big Three, Death Note, Steins;Gate etc. For SAO and Monogatari Series, hardly anyone talk about it...well...anime in general unless someone brings it up in a conversation. Then again, I hardly meet any millennials or Gen Zs in my jobs. Mostly the workers are from Gen X who are most likely don't watch anime and more likely talk about the 60s-80s' bands or old western movies instead. However, if you go online, not necessarily MAL, but any other anime related websites or forums, Monogatari Series and SAO were being talked about everywhere and both are definitely mainstream, if you stay away from the shounen mainstream anime topics. Here are some titles below that I hardly (or never) see anyone talk about them, even when people recommending anime from certain genres. Some are my favourites while other ones are only average but still good: Aria The Animation Tamayura Sketchbook Full Color's Amanchu Sola Carnival Phantasm Fushigi no Umi no Nadia Nagato Yuki-chan no Shoushitsu Yu-Gi-Oh! Zexal (and the eras after that) Any Transformers anime series These old titles were big in my home country in Asia back in the day, but not anywhere else: Yadamon Denkou Chou Tokkyuu Hikarian Bakusou Kyoudai Let's & Go Chuuka Ichiban! Wanwan Sanjuushi (not the western version of Dogtanian) Fushigi no Kuni no Alice (again, not the western version of Alice in Wonderland) |

@Serafos Teenager me sure had an allergy to "Girly" things, so I never really understood these genres. These days I am slowly exploring more feminine genres. I recently started reading Sailor Moon and I am also watching some romance stuff. I'll try looking into this idol genre to figure out if I like it or not. |

Shangri-la not the video game anime shangri-la frontier. Talking about shangri la the post apocalypse anime that had commentary on climate change economic corruption and the rise of a corporation run government. The third girl with the blue eye. Another post apocalypse anime this one caused by advance war technology being human civilization to collapse and opened a window for a cabal of space aliens elf people to take over earth and govern it. |

I could rattle off dozens from over the years, but I'll refrain. The latest one though, from this past year, has been Ramen Akaneko. OK, the graphics are a little iffy, but the characters and the VA work are top notch. It deserves a lot more attention than it's gotten. Highly recommended if you're into cats or ramen or even if you're not. About as chill as chill can get. Another recent SoL that deserves a wider audience is Do It Yourself! |

@Captain-577 I know about Nisio's novels on the Monogatari series, many people said the novels are pretty good. If your post is about the non-anime people, then I agree, Monogatari Series won't be the first thing they will hear of. TVs tend to show Naruto, Pokémon and other stuff the most instead of Monogatari Series, which does have a lot of suggestive content from time to time. Most of them are from the slice of life genre, while other ones are mild/mid action. I put Yu-Gi-Oh! Zexal and eras after that into it because the franchise got kinda died off around this point. Yes, real life tournaments are still around sometimes, but no one talk about the anime anymore except that one friend that I still meet from time to time for movies. Other than himself, no one around me talk about Yu-Gi-Oh at all. Nor anyone online these days. |

@JoeChip I am sorry but both Death Note and Cowboy Bebop seem to too popular to be considered "lesser known". I remember a few years ago Death Note was practically everywhere. And Cowboy Bebop is an absolute classic and honestly one of the icons in history. It's popular among all kinds of people besides otaku. |

@chaosflame5 It's not "Nisio's novels on Monogatari series"; it's "Nisio's Monogatari novel series" that was adapted into the anime. Nisio Isin is a celebrated author in Japan. Just look up his bibliography and your mind will blown by just how many books he has written throughout his career. His stories spans many different genres, so every one has their own favorite Nisio Isin book. And everyone points at the ecchi in Bakemonogatari, but that's not all. Everything about this story is very out there. This was translated very well into the anime adaptation, the animators decided to go with a surreal style and didn't censor anything out of respect. Also, the reason I don't like to call it "Monogatari" series because; 物語 (monogatari) means "story; tale". So calling it the "Monogatari series" is like saying "the story series". Outside of Japan it's an exotic term so it works. But I like to call it Bakemonogatari series, that title literally means "Tales of Monsters" or "Tales of Supernaturals". |

There’s way too many to list, but I’ll limit it to just 15. They’re not all what I’d consider to be obscure, but they’re all at least outside of the top 1000 most watched on MAL, and I’d rate them all 8 or better. Cross Game Uchuu Kyoudai Eikoku Koi Monogatari Emma Atarashii Joushi wa Do Tennen Dennou Coil Last Exile Niehime to Kemono no Ou Tiger & Bunny Honey and Clover Kaleido Star Genshiken Aishiteruze Baby Maria-sama ga Miteru Gakuen Utopia Manabi Straight Udon no Kuni no Kiniro Kemari |

Kamichu. I was very surprised at how good the show turned out to be. Figured it would be decent at best, standard CGDCT. Thats probably what most people think upon seeing the cover art which explains why it never caught on. Shame we never got a second season. |

@Kwanthemaster Nice pick. It's a pretty underrated CGDCT. |
