Has the original work ever influenced your experience with the adaptation, in a positive or negative way? For example, your hype about the adaptation took a big hit due to some (subjective) problems with the original work. Or you were much more friendly to the adaptation due to the fact that you liked the original work, although other people were not so optimistic. Or, conversely, did your experience with the adaptation negatively or positively influence your experience with the original work in the first place? For example, I often found myself in situations where a bad or subjectively unsatisfactory ending simply poisoned my emotions after anime I really liked.

I've created a similar topic in the past, but now it seems to have gained new relevance for me after the original manga of several of my favorite anime caused such strong controversy among fans that some even stated that they had lost much of their motivation to follow the anime. Just knowing where it will end up despite their generally positive attitude towards adaptations.

Not really. I usually don't care about the original work. I mainly watch anime anyway.

Well, it might depend if I read the manga first before the anime get made, but then again from my experience: I watched the anime before I read the manga usually, it's very rare for me to read the manga (even before the anime got made), then watch the anime after it was made. So I can't say if reading the original work would help me influence the anime adaptation positively or negatively. I guess it would depend on how good or critically acclaimed (in my eyes) the manga for me to make that judgement on the anime (pre-production).

Now, when it comes anime remake/2nd adaptation of a previous anime, then that is a different deal right here. I'm watching the 2024 Ranma 1/2 anime, only because I'm a big retro fan and really liked the 1989/90's Ranma 1/2 anime. So yes I do judge the remake a bit more harshly. That's how I treat Sailor Moon Crystal when comparing to the 90's classics (disclaimer: I haven't read the manga, so...). If I ever get Crunchyroll, I want to watch both Bartender series (2006 & 2024 side by side). Boy do I wish the Bartender manga would get license and a translation in the US.

Yes, I didn't like the voice direction of JJK anime at all because I read the manga and many decisions in the dead dead demon's adaptation felt bad for me (even though others felt perfect)

@WaterMage My hate for this manga ended the day the last chapter came out. All that remains is only disappointment and sadness.

I used to really like the Hunter x Hunter 2011 anime, but after reading the manga I soured on it a lot. It's still pretty good but it's nothing compared to the manga (or the 1999 adaptation).

@Wyatt Isn't the new version considered better than the original? Or are there different opinions?

I generally enjoy the original work more than its adaptation, so reading it does have a tendency to make me like the anime a little bit less.

So far it has always impacted it in a positive way. I generally watch the anime first, then I will buy the original manga if I enjoyed it. I'm also more inclined to re-read a manga rather than rewatching an anime.

the original work totally influences how I experience anime adaptations. It's like, "Congratulations, you’ve read the manga? Now prepare to either be amazed or horribly disappointed!"

When my favorite scenes and characters come to life, it's like the wildest dreams come true. "I'm like Yes, give me those dazzling animations, colorful background sceneries and epic voice acting!"
But when they butcher the storyline or skip key moments, it's disappointing and dissatisfying for sure . "I'm like Really? You just decided to leave out the best part? Bravo."

So, knowing the source material either elevate my experience or leave me questioning the meaning of life and why it's against me.

Yes, I was watching Beelzebub and decided to read the manga alongside it, it was a mistake as quickly my entusiasm from watching the adaptation evaporated. The fillers weren't the problem but the changes to original plot to wrap it up just made me frustrated. If I watched it without reading the manga I would give it at least a 7 but it's stuck at 6 - well it is my fault that I read the manga alongside it.

I loved Plus Sized Elf because i had read the manga and was super excited about it's adaptation as it was the first manga i read that didn't i hadn't seen the prior anime.

It had moments i was excited for but also things i was disappointed in.

Like i was disappointed it was only 10 minutes and the animation was very minimalist.

But i was also happier with it cause it added some more ecchi/nudity into scenes that didn't have it originally.

@RobertBobert there are certainly different opinions, though I’ve never met anyone whose actually seem both adaptations prefer the 2011 version.

In my opinion, the manga is always better than the anime if it’s an anime from before around 2020. However, anime adaptations at their best have gotten better, and mangaka have gotten worse, so in recent years anime truly surpass the manga: attack on titan, jujutsu kaisen, chainsaw man, Dan da dan

Negatively overall. Either you're disappointed with the adaptation or the original source material has gone in a direction that made you less excited about future adaptations. Case in point: Attack on Titan. Ever since this realization I like to experience either original works or just watch/read the one of the two. I don't go out of my way to read a manga of an adapted work even if I liked the adaptation. The same goes for a manga, for example.

@LordSozin Have you also found yourself in situations where you were incredibly hyped about an unfinished anime, and then were upset to find out that in the original LN or manga things were ultimately resolved in a way that was disappointing for you? When I was still young and very naive, this happened to me very often when watching harem anime.

I'm rewatching the first series of The Ancient Magus Bride while reading the manga and have gained an additional appreciation for the anime. (I haven't seen the second series yet so please don't spoil it for me.) I like the manga, and the anime is a very straight and literal and well executed adaptation of it. However, what the anime adds is space in between what's in the panels that gives everything more room to breathe, and a great deal of filling in the often quite spare backgrounds in the manga with rich, textural art. Every little addition and flourish elevates the material to new heights. It's an excellent demonstration of how a good manga can be made into a great series simply by showing care and attention in bringing it to the screen.

@RobertBobert, plenty. At some point, everyone is gonna be hit with that reality. It just comes down to how you take it, I guess. For my part, I didn't take it too well when Attack on Titan went the way it did and ended the way it did. Looking back, my distaste for the way the series went about its final arc and concluded its story made me develop a strong bias towards the adaptation in anime form in the final season(s). It was a time of just pure childish disdain when I looked back on it. I still don't like how AoT ended but it is less from an emotional side.

On the flip side, I didn't have this particular phase of distaste this often. It just happens to be that AoT was a series I heavily invested into from very early age in my anime/manga journey.

Yeah, positively with Space Battleship Yamato 2202 (a 70’s sci-fi anime remake). I initially didn’t like it because the directorial style changed so drastically from the first remake season, Space Battleship Yamato 2199 (less focus on side character development, lack of fan service, more focus on progressing the story). I actually dropped it for a few months because of this.

However, I enjoyed it a lot better after watching the original work, “Farewell Space Battleship Yamato.” Many of the artistic/directional choices taken the new series were pretty much directly taken from the original movie, including the weirdly nonsensical plot. It didn’t necessarily make the remake “good,” but I guess it was somewhat reassuring to see that the reason it turned “weird” was that they were keeping truer to the original work than with 2199.

The tonal whiplash from 2199 to 2202 is still one of the most jarring I’ve experienced in anime, but watching the original helped me like the remake a lot better, if only due to how they tried to be faithful to the source material (even though the original was kinda trash).

@Wyatt, I certainly think there are series where the anime adaptation is either on par or surpasses the original source material. The most recent example off the top of my head is Ferien. I'm curious: what makes you think the anime adaptation (especially the final seasons) is better than the AoT manga?

@LordSozin I haven’t seen frieren, but since it’s a recent anime I could believe it. Big productions have gotten bigger lately, and younger mangaka seem less able to keep up with their own ambitions. I don’t like the AOT manga or the anime, but I felt that the first season with its CGI backgrounds for the flying scenes was quite revolutionary and thrilling, director tetsuro araki brought an excitement to it that the manga lacked. I also dislike the mangas art

@WaterMage Nah Oshi No Ko was genuinely dogshit tho

As for the questions countless times. So much so that I have refused to watch any adaptation of original works. Some example which made me do so were chained soldier, the girl I like forgot her glasses, etc. etc.
