Today we've released a new page for both budding and veteran manga fans: Manga Adapted to Anime!

Similar to the Seasonal Anime page, this new landing page will list manga adaptations of:
  • Currently Airing Anime
  • Upcoming Anime
  • All Adaptations

The new page has various filters and sorts added to it already, which will hopefully help you answer questions like:
  • Has the manga finished for that anime I watched?
  • What are the best rated manga of currently airing series?
  • Which manga should I read before the adaptation starts?
  • ...and so on

We hope you'll check out the page and find something new or old to read 😊

@deg I think the More Info section of the anime's page should be used for that. There are some entries that already say what chapters/volumes have been adapted, but it should be widely expanded upon if it gets serious traction or MAL decide to set up something similar to MAL Rewrite.

@Kineta does this feature not include LN's? Is this only just for manga and manhwa, or can we include LN's and novels (and possibly add a filter to display which entry types we want to look for)?

how is evangelion a manga adapted to anime? the manga was made to further promote the anime and it ended years later after 1996.

@Catalano Because it's implemented in the most simplistic way, which is to assume that the anime is always adapted from the manga.
I thought for a second that they might be smart enough to compare start dates, but nope, it also lists the 2007 Gurren Lagann manga, which is clearly just a tie-in. And even then, tie-ins usually do start before the anime starts airing, to build hype, so that wouldn't even be a good filter. They also clearly don't filter out anime that are marked as source: original, because that'd make sense.
It also automatically declares the manga as the work from which something is adapted. E.g. it shows the Hyouka manga as being adapted to anime, when the anime is an adaptation of the Koten-bu Light Novels, which the manga is adapted from as it was a tie-in to the anime.

This system feels like another thing just tacked on to the existing database with no addition to the DB system that would make it an actual improvement. You'd need a system across DB entries that designates the original work (be it the anime, the manga, the LN, or something not on MAL, like a VN or a Western novel) to properly implement the page. As it is, it will spread disinformation about just about every anime that doesn't follow the straight and narrow manga->anime path. And good luck with any of the numerous very loose adaptations, about which you'll find practically no information on this site. It's just a list of manga exists->anime exists with nothing else of note.

Also, to the mod comment: nice job editing out large parts of the meaning of the comment because he called you dumb.
The Evangelion manga is an adaptation of the anime, this page explicitly declaring otherwise (its title is literally "Manga Adapted to Anime") is spreading misinformation. Don't try to sugarcoat the obvious issue with your new feature.

Nice.
Will you make similar pages for other types? Manhwa?? LNs??

Will we have something similar for sources?? (anime adapted from ->__)

Will this open the door to finally have more refined and/or a better search?

When will be able to filter series by duration, a more complex tag search, etc?
Just dreaming of the day when some of the suggestion from the suggestion board are implemented.

I'm not complaining. It's a finally and about time that the manga side got some love on this site. Fr.

Good update! One piece of feedback, it seems like some manga are missing from the list, e.g. https://myanimelist.net/manga/1061/Meitantei_Conan / https://myanimelist.net/manga/141466/Chiikawa__Nanka_Chiisakute_Kawaii_Yatsu

It would be one thing if it was only for the specific season, but One Piece is listed, so that does not seem to be the case. Is this something that has to be manually added or should it be automatic based on the airing status and the relations between the entries?

Thank you and the development team! It'll certainly be better now since I don't need to search up if an anime is airing.

This isn't a list for literature and comics adapted into anime, it's a list of comics of which there also exists an anime adaptation. This in turn displays all comics regardless of whether or not they are in fact what the anime was adapted from. It includes comic adaptations of original anime, light novels, web novels, etc. as long as an anime also exists. It even excludes all literature (light novels, web novels, etc), even when they are the actual source material for the adaptation. So this feature doesn't exactly serve it's purpose as it is currently implemented. Please fix this.

I also don't like how it defaults to display only currently airing anime. I think that the interface should assume a more neutral approach until specified by the user. That's kinda like going to Wendy's and the cashier asks me "What cheeseburger do you want" when I'm clearly going there for a Spicy Ghost Pepper Ranch Chicken sandwich and have no intention of ordering a cheeseburger (how could I ever refuse the Spicy Ghost Pepper Ranch Chicken sandwich (it is peak American dining)).

Also as a bug, the tab-style buttons ("All", "Airing Now", "Upcoming") don't do anything. Rather it's the text that I have to click on. That should be fixed.

Sounds nice. I can’t wait for light novels to hopefully be implemented once it’s smooth sailing. It would also be nice to one day have a section on the anime search page for source (like we do for genre, theme, demographic, and studio for example) and then categories for source type (I.e. a category for manga, light novel, game, original, visual novel, 4-panel manga, novel, etc.). It would be nice to see how much of anime comes from which type of sources.

Welp, thanks... I guess. Be nice if in-demand features, like this, were implemented, but not gonna get my hopes up.

Also, the Upcoming tab under Adapted to Anime has a bug. Very subtle bug. Because of the way the developers implemented with manga as a base, and not taking into account various releases, it looks like they are not able to distinguish new anime that is upcoming and anime that have already aired but have another release / season sometime in the future.

It's quite confusing, and shows that not enough analysis was put into the design. And because the requirements were probably pretty vague, the developers can state that it's designed to the requirements, even though I'm sure they're aware of their design flaw.

As an FYI, I say this from the POV of a professional systems analyst who does this for a living with over 20 years experience designing websites and software application. Also, looking at the above comments, I'm by far not the first to notice this

But but but I thought novels were a kind of manga! Why else would they all be in the top manga list?

Any potential use of this new page vanishes if it really is missing the hit "manga" that get made into seasonal isekai.

I hope you will fix the bug that it includes manga adapted FROM anime (different from manga that's been adapted INTO anime).

'Light Novel Adapted to Anime' doko?

Even though many anime are adapted from light novels and not just from manga. I know the number of chapters and chapter naming in light novels is more complex.

Really cool. Looking forward to more awesome new features.

One suggestion if I may,

Can we have the Staff/People page look like the Company's page format? It will look much cleaner both from their info./bio standpoint and their credits in their respective show as well. Like VAs having what anime they have appeared in and in their roles alongside and for the staff, what anime/manga role they had in that respective show/manga. Director, Producer, etc. Like the Company's page. It's very user-friendly.

I hope to see something like that someday. And, as always, Thank you for your hard work. :)

I noticed this issue, too. I think it's because you haven't seen ALL of the AOT anime adaptations. For it to disappear, I believe you have to put the following anime on your list: Shingeki no Kyojin in the Dome: Heishi-tachi no Hoshizora, Shingeki no Kyojin Season 3 Specials, Shingeki no Kyojin Movie: Kanketsu-hen - The Last Attack, and Shingeki no Kyojin Picture Drama.

On a similar note, I noticed that Chainsaw Man was still there when I checked off Complete and In My List (NO CMPL) even though I watched the anime. Then I noticed that I didn't have the Reze movie on my list, and when I put it on PTW, Chainsaw Man was gone. So, you have to have all of the anime adaptations on your list, even the ones that haven't aired yet.
