I've been wanting to join a MAL Halloween or Christmas events for years now, nearly did this Halloween, but I've got no idea how and it might be too late.

@RuneRem Awww sorry, it's too late for Secret Santa. I don't know if you've ever participated in them, but MAL also has a Valentine and an Easter Hunt event. The Easter Hunt is kinda similar to Malloween because it's a big puzzle to find eggs across the website. They're a bit closer so you could participate soon-ish.

I hope you can make it for Malloween or Secret Santa or both next year!

@DeadlyRaven when will I receive my badge for this Secret Santa event? I’ve already did my job and the badge hasn’t appeared on my profile.

@OtakuKun1 The badges haven't been sent yet. They're only sent once the event is fully over and the Santas have been revealed so somewhere after January 6-7.

thanks for the response, I read these threads every year, just casually checking them out, but no real idea about them. I'll try and be more active next time

In terms of difficulty I think the Easter event is the most challenging but it's simple. The Halloween is more light hearted but slightly more complicated. The Christmas one is probably the most work but it's laid out nicely to follow along and pretty fun overall. Valentine's is good if you're creative but if you don't want to enter anything then you can just vote after it's been curated. They also periodically do read/watch challenge stacks for badges which are simple but still cool to collect.

It says present opening on Tuesday Dec 30, but the 30th is on Monday and Tuesday is the 31st. When is the opening? Monday 30th or Tuesday 30st?

Heyo,I know i shouldn't be complaining in such event but I'm just kinda disappointed so.....i thought participants in the image event were supposed to draw something themselves or at least edit an image. However, the gift I received was just a downloaded image from this site: https://x.com/TasuketeMama_/status/1507739309691969537 , which is two years old and the current profile picture is edited myself, santa just downloaded it & submitted it nothing else

I wouldn't have minded if the Secret Santa wasn't good at drawing, but some basic editing would've been nice. I probably spent 7 hours drawing a banner for someone else, even though I'm not good at drawing. I did it because I thought a personal touch would mean something to the recipient.

But all I got was a downloaded image from Google, which I could've done myself. Thanks for hosting the event, it was fun, but if you're going to give badges to people who put in such low effort, I don't think that's fair at all :(

I have a question: Do we have to start watching/reading the gifts before the Santa reveal to get the badges?

I'm extremely happy with the two recommended to me (Dr. Stone for anime, and Naruto for manga), but:
1. I like to focus on one series at a time, so I don't want to start both simultaneously
2. I'm already playing a game and would like to finish it and potentially its two sequels before starting either of them (It's Lobotomy Corporation, for any who are curious)

@DonPolar You only have to be a good Santa and send your gift on time to receive the badge. They're only going to be sent later though.

Hmm, since it's for anime and manga: I think you might have to try both before the reveal, but you don't have to finish them! Just a few chapters/episodes are enough! So you can try them then focus on one then maybe restart the other later?

Because they're from two different Santas, it would be hard to give your impressions and thanks to them if you only read or watch one.

@DonPolar Seconding Raven's answer, but also wanted to jump in and say that it's only recommended to read/watch a bit of your present. It is absolutely not required, just a nice thing to do so you can give them your impressions and thanks.

If you do not have the time to do so, feel free to still leave a message for your Santas thanking them for the gift and letting them know you'll get to it when you have time. That way, they won't feel bad that you haven't started your gift. And of course, feel free to keep in touch long after the event if you want to give them your thoughts on their gifts (◕‿◕)

So when is the reveal going to happen? It says the 6th or the 7th, and it's already well past noon on the 7th.

@Rajidae personally I allowed Santa to reinforce recs from my PTW list because I still haven't gotten around to the couple I plan to watch from last year (+the anime rec thread during Bunkasai this year)... that being said, one of the series I was recommended this year is called Nanbaka, which I'm currently in the 2nd season of as of writing this.

Good action, good comedy, pretty ok series overall and I'm happy someone brought it to my attention! There are also a few support roles with EN VAs I semi-follow which is nice, and I discovered Nico as a character... he shares the same name as one of my favorite youtubers, and I just want to protect him so much and give head pats <3 so there's a few great take-aways right there.

@WestOnAndrewAve You truly find the Christmas event to be the hardest? I participate in most of these events now, but never the Easter or Halloween ones... scavenger hunting amongst a whole database with some hints to go by is a lot more work and brain power than anything else on here, imo... especially since I'm not in the MAL Discord or anything to work with other members. Compare that to just looking at someone's request and watch lists to make a short recommendation, and it really doesn't feel like that much work to me.

I should also mention that, depending on your luck for what's on the list at the time, the read/watch challenge stacks are also great for getting around to stuff that you planned to check out but for some reason never did. For the recent Olympics one, that's how I finally got around to checking out Yuri!! on Ice.

Also, where @RuneRem is concerned with information: I'd also add that there is a seasonal "Anime Fantasy League" where you basically make predictions for the popularity of upcoming releases, 4 per year for each season. I tried one once and personally didn't find it that fun to do it so often so I stopped there, but if you want easy badges for your profile and/or easy events to try out, I'd point you in that direction too.

@MoonSpider No I said Easter was the hardest and Christmas was the most work. I don't think Easter is a lot of work because it's usually either easy enough of a clue you get it quick or it's so stupidly hard you need help but it's still not a lot of work just clicking around. To do a good gift anyway you have to figure out what they'd like based on their rating of similar shows/favorites and then write a nice long recommendation for it, and if you give more than 1 recommendation it's even more. Also the process of signing up is longer since it's a lot more involved than Easter.

@WestOnAndrewAve Ok, that's a distinction I missed, good to know 👍

Granted, I never completed Easter/Halloween, so I really can't speak for how much actual work it would feel like in my opinion. I could only guess it'd be a lot more time and effort comparatively, but I guess it comes down to subjectivity for what qualifies as "work" at that point.

Of them all, I think we could say that Bunkasai is the most work, though as evidenced by my own badges, if you can manage some light editing, you can complete the event pretty easily. Just from this year, I got 2 tickets from making custom image requests, 2 tickets from contest voting, one for another anime recommendation, and a few more tickets dedicated to dropping memes/images in the thread. Of course you have your tougher options like quizzes and art, but despite being one of the more involved events, you can get 5 tickets pretty easily, and more. I've never made "honor roll" yet, but the completion badge absolutely.

Personally even with the sign-up forms and needing to check the recipient's Watch lists to make it good, I never thought of Secret Santa being that much work. Especially once I know what I'm recommending - I'll go over the required characters easy.

But really that's all neither here nor there, since I misunderstood your point initially, my bad.
