The official website for the television anime adaptation of Edelweiss's Tensui no Sakuna-hime (Sakuna: Of Rice and Ruin) video game announced on Friday that an anime sequel is in production. Original character designer Ryouta Murayama drew an illustration to commemorate the announcement (pictured).

The first season, produced by P.A. Works, aired in 13 episodes in Summer 2024. Crunchyroll simulcast the anime with subtitles worldwide, excluding Asia.

Edelweiss created the side-scrolling action role-playing game, which was released in November 2020 on the Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, and PC by Xseed Games in North America and Marvelous elsewhere.

Synopsis
Spoiled harvest goddess Sakuna finds herself banished from her opulent celestial home to an island overrun with demons. In the untamed wilderness, she must rediscover her birthright as the daughter of a warrior god and harvest goddess by weathering the elements, fighting monsters, and cultivating rice, the source of her power. By her side in this forbidding place is her guardian Tama and a group of outcast humans. Together, these unlikely companions must join hands to tame both the soil and the demons of Hinoe Island. Sequel? Didn't the first season adapt the entire game?

Unexpected, but welcome. Really enjoyed the anime, despite the roughness in the beginning.

They also announced a spin-off game currently in development: https://www.gematsu.com/2024/11/sakuna-of-rice-and-ruin-spin-off-sakuna-chronicles-kokorowa-and-the-gears-of-creation-announced

And apparently there's a mobile game coming too?

Not sure why, but they seem to be trying to turn this into a major franchise.

I liked the adaptation, but the finale didn't leave me fully satisfied. Getting a second season is a nice surprise.

One Piece episode 914 & 915 & 1027 were a mistake and 957 brought the salvation - FMmatron

@perseii So, is this a franchise now?

@RobertBobert I guess so? I just remember the original video game getting a decent critical reception in the West but not getting talked about much. (Turns out the game came out in November 2020, I could've sworn it was older than that) I've heard nothing about this "series" since.

I'm curious about who's behind this new push. Maybe the game has a cult following in Japan? Both the developers and the publishers of the game aren't exactly massive or hugely popular, I don't think. Maybe someone with a lot of influence and funding has a personal love for this series?

It's just hard to believe this series has wide enough appeal to warrant a new anime, a new game and a new mobile game all at once.

@perseii Maybe they specially created the anime to advertise the decision to invest in the game?

Wow, this is a surprise. The first game (the only game so far) has been fully adapted. So it's hard to believe a new anime is coming up when the new game hasn't really been announced yet.
