Do you think these shows are a good introduction to the medium? Or would you recommend newer, shorter series that might be more digestible for someone just getting into anime?

If someone likes anime like The Big 3, I would recommend it to them, if their tastes are different, I would recommend something that accentuates their taste.

No unless they say that are willing to put the time so far I only recommend 12-24 episodes and I have a 100% satisfaction rate so I say it's more up to who you are recommending to.

No i won't. I consider them a bad recommendation, because they're slow asf and might make them stop watching animes, Naruto is long and 50% filler, One Piece is long asf and bleach is shit. It's better to recommend them good paced good animes like Erased, Death Note, To your eternity, Jujutsu Kaisen or demon slayer(not good). The only long anime i can think of recommending them is Attack on Titan

No, never. I would like to recommend some short and catchy anime but for most case, I never recommend anything to anyone. It's completely up to them. Recommending something and especially to the newcomer is just pain.

I mean why not? It's literally how I got into anime, there is a reason it caught on with a lot of casual fans. They largely are pretty fun action adventure YA stories that have mass appeal. There are a few things I would clarify, like frankly not recommending the OP anime (until WIT's remake) and that they should expect filler and some pacing issues (in Naruto's and Bleach's case you can suffer through unlike OP, and these pacing issues only come up later in the show after it's hooked you), however, beyond that it's still a good intro.

Would it be the first anime I would recommend...? Probably not. It's helpful to watch shorter shows to get a feel for what kinds of writing you like within the medium. There are good shorter action adventure shonen, they can try, or at least those that have a lower commitment. I still wouldn't mind recommending it after they have watched a few shows.

Also.. some of you guys posting realize recommendations aren't about your own preferences right lol? Again, for me it just depends on the person, any anime can be a good first anime, even ones I don't like.

The Big Three are indoctrination of battle shounen especially when people are pushing those as "must see". It will be years until said newcomer will even consider watching something different if at all. This is how you make a narrow minded anime fans.

Only DBZ, the other battle shounens are garbage tbh. The first couple dozen episodes of Bleach are alright, and a few select fights throughout the series are fine too. But a person would be much better off just watching "best fights" compilations instead.

Any new anime fan should definitely knock out a long list of 12, 24, 50 episode shows before they struggle through a 300+ episode one
Hunter x Hunter would be way easier to get into and would leave a craving and confidence to dig into another long show

I would not recommend the Big 3 to newcomers, especially if I don’t know their specific tastes. These long, older series can feel overwhelming due to their length and slower build-up. Instead, I’d prioritize anime with a tight, well-paced, and engaging story throughout. I would focus on series that hook viewers from the first few episodes and maintain strong pacing and substance. People’s tastes can vary widely, but most will appreciate a story that’s concise, focused, and engaging, offering a rewarding experience without a long commitment. Ideally, I’d recommend anime with around 12 or 24 episodes (or slightly longer if they have strong pacing and substance), as they tend to offer a complete, satisfying narrative in a short amount of time. Examples include Death Note, The Promised Neverland, Erased, Parasyte: The Maxim, and the movie Your Name.

I've been watching anime regularly for 5 years and have not seen any of them... so probably not. Like I'm sure most would enjoy one piece, but then I ask, wouldn't it be better, specially for a new comer to watch a 100, 12 episode long shows instead?

Like just imagine, you could watch, made in abyss, death parade, madoka magica, steins;gate, pluto, frieren, evangelion, cowboy bebop, mob psycho 100 and 50 other shorter classics, or you could JUST watch one piece.

That's understandable. But this is about people who haven't touched anime at all and don't know what they're taste in anime is. It's something completely different if someone has watched more than a few anime and know what they like and don't like. I mean, I personally wouldn't recommend Naruto to people if they have issues with long anime or don't like the characteristics of battle shounen anime.

@Prideful_Lion The fact of the matter is that the Big 3 started the journey for many anime fans, me included. Although anime has general differences from other media, it also has similarities. I find it absurd to think anime is completely disconnected from any other media, and if they engage with other media even slightly, they can surely have a slight description of what they like, e.g., “I like action.” “I like good world-building,” etc.

You misunderstood what I said. I am criticizing people who do not take into consideration the taste of the person they are recommending, not people who do not recommend the Big 3. For instance, here you showed importance to the taste of the person; this is something I encourage, not criticize.

Not at all outside of curiosity, but I'd tell them the specific arcs of them I think that are good.

I'd suggest them getting into Yu Yu Hakusho, Hunter x Hunter, Rurouni Kenshin, Jigokuraku and Fullmetal Alchemist instead.

Not a chance. They all are very long shows and there are only two posibilities: the newcomer would love or "totally hate forever" (?) every anime. It's pretty risky; I would recommend a much shorter show thinking in what kind of person is this newcomer.

No one has said what they consider the "big three" to be. On MAL it's AoT, Death Note, and Fullmetal. But people are talking about Naruto?

Death Note is good but I wouldn't recommend it as the very first anime. Maybe 3rd or 4th anime. Same for AoT. But Fullmetal and Naruto, in my opinion, are better for newcomers!

@Kiyomice Ironic because Death Note and AoT are one of the shows recommended most when asked for the first anime to watch along something like JJK or Demon Slayer. All four them have a good hook to introduce someone to the style of anime. Naruto is too long and never watched Fullmetal.

@DinoNo1 I think Death Note and AoT are GREAT and should definitely be recommended sooner rather than later, but I also feel like they don't really represent the...idea of anime? For me Naruto is the perfect example of what anime "is". I think Death Note or AoT may be too serious if it's your very first one. Naruto probably is too long to be the first recommendation, but I'd still recommend it before the others :P

I actually only watched Fullmetal this year! But it would have had me super hyped about watching more anime if I had seen it as a newber.

As an anime? No, definitely not, they're all way too long. Manga-wise I don't see why not, as long as they don't expect too much. It's basically Japanese superhero comics.

No, never. They are mindless battle shounen, I usually like to recommend newcomers things based on what they enjoy outside of anime.
Just an avid anime watcher of 20 years, not much else I could say about myself (that I don't want to reveal, of course, just ask if you wanna know more!)

A lot of battle shonen tend to be what get people interested in Japanese media, so what Westerners refer to as "the big 3" are a great start because depending on when you grew up they may have possibly been your introduction.

I'd rather start from anime that have far less episodes, but better overall production quality. Preferably anime that have already been concluded, like FMAB, AoT or Death Note. If the person I recommended it to liked those shows, then I would suggest giving a try to one of Big 3 anime.
