So it's pretty normal to like one or two songs in an anime. But growing up, I've always thought Naruto has a very impressive OST repertoire. Though I'm not the biggest fan of the show, I am big into of several of its OPs and like quite a few more. Not to mention how even the average 'sad moment' or 'intense moment' tracks are all really iconic — I even know "Rising Fighting Spirit", "Strong and Strike" and "Konoha Afternoon" by name! It's kind of insane if you really think about it..

While watching some comedy anime, I fsr really dug Teekyu's third opening. This might've given the YT Music algorithm ideas, cause now it keep recommending songs from it. Today I actually gave a couple of them a try and holy fucking shit I love them??? I always thought the OPs fit the tone pretty well, but this and Qunka (especially Qunka) are goddamn masterpieces.

So yeah, these two anime are unexpectedly outstanding at OSTs, and they aren't even music anime! What about y'all? Any series that you feel just pretty much won't miss?

Spiral:suiri no kizuna has an above average OST imo. Its a very cheap looking anime and yet the OST has a lot of heart, I like almost every song.

Yugioh 5Ds I also thought has an above average OST, you would think a long running anime which is made primarilly to sell cards to children would be ass but once again, the ost is surprisingly good.

And who could forget the first season of Shingeki no Kyojin, possibly my favourite OST from any anime, almost every song is a banger.

Gakkougurashi, Knights of Sidonia, Strange Dawn, Fantastic Children, Armitage III, Coyote Ragtime Show, Planetarian, Yofukashi no Uta, Kamisama Dolls, Katanagatari, Grisaia no Kajitsu, Yosuga no Sora, Kamisama ni Natta Hi, Stratos 4, Mahou Shoujo-tai Arusu, GitS: SAC, etc.

Would be much more difficult for me to name anime with OSTs I didn't like, or even outright hated, because I'm struggling to come up with any titles on the spot.

Saint Seiya has spectacular, brilliant soundtrack composed by Seiji Yokoyama.

Attack on Titan, Kabaneri of the Iron Fortress, and 86 anime have awesome soundtracks created by Hiroyuki Sawano.

Many movies directed by Satoshi Kon, as well as Berserk TV series from 1990s (this one wasn't directed by Satoshi Kon), have great soundtracks created by Susumu Hirasawa.

Mandatory "every 80s anime ever" answer. But since I feel like elaborating a bit, here are some (mostly obscure, tho I bent the rule for City Hunter) contenders for best ost of the 80s:

City Hunter

There's like, 3 albums worth of bangers in that show. INCREDIBLE 80s OST, probably the best. Instrumentals, city pop songs, it has it all.

Area 88 (OVA)

Lots of palm-muted guitar and cool trumpet lines. Awesome forgotten OVA

California Crisis (OVA)

Crazy good funk ost from Miho Fujiwara. If anyone knows where I can stream that OVA in HD, DM me ;).

Megazone 23 (OVA)

Can't mention great 80s OSTs without mentionning Megazone 23.

Vampire Princess Miyu (OVA)

Every song is like, the saddest, most depressing song you'd find in a 16 bits era JRPG.

Here are most of my fav series/movies for OST. There's all types here: heart-pounding battle music, slow sad heart-rending tracks, upbeat stuff, relaxing stuff. Also, everything from electronic/synth to piano solo to orchestral to even disco (see Space Battleship Yamato).

As far as absolute favs go, hands down #1 OST for me is Suzumiya Haruhi no Shoushitsu (movie sequel to the TV series). For a series I'll go with Space Battleship Yamato 2199 though it's hard to elevate just one title over a half dozen worthy candidates.

Series:

Uchuu Senkan Yamato 2199

Girls und Panzer

So Ra No Wo To

Suzumiya Haruhi no Yuuutsu

Legend of the Galactic Heroes (reboot)

Strike Witches

Maria-sama ga Miteru

Saki

Shoujo Kakumei Utena

Aria series

Toradora!

Akebi-chan no Sailor-fuku

Seirei no Moribito

Xian Wang de Richang Shenghuo

Haibane Renmei

Gosick

Rurouni Kenshin TV (1996)

Movie/OVA:

Suzumiya Haruhi no Shoushitsu -- My #1.

I love every media with great OSTs so it is a very notable feature that sometimes defines my love for the anime
FLCL's soundtrack with the pillows literally changed my entire music taste, can't stop saying how much I love them
Samurai Champloo's hiphop work with Nujabes, Fat Jon
Monogatari would lose a whole spice without classical jazzy sometimes french music
Toradora also gains more life with the OST
Air Gear with skankfunk from JSR
Abenobashi and Sayonara Zetsubou Sensei's craziness all over the place
BECK rocking as it is, Welcome to the NHK, Sonny Boy, Gurren Lagann, Kill La Kill, Terror in Resonance, Dennou Coil, Kyousougiga, recently Frieren and Girls Band Cry have been my great shots at good anime w great music

As others have said Yuki Kaijura's music is all great, stand outs being Noir, Madlax, El Cazador de la Bruja, Madoka Magica

The Madoka spinoff Magia Record also has excellent music, even if Yuki wasn't the composer

Serial Experiments Lain is a personal favourite of mine when it comes to its soundtrack, Loneliness 1a and 1b in particular I find to be very powerful

If you want something more recent, Mobile Suit Gundam: The Witch From Mercury as well as Lycoris Recoil had excellent soundtracks as well.

Gundam in general, vast majority of series at minimum have good soundtracks, and others have some of the best OSTs in the medium in my opinion.
