Emi Shinohara, the voice actress known for her portrayal of Makoto Kino (Sailor Jupiter) in the beloved anime Bishoujo Senshi Sailor Moon (Sailor Moon), died on Sunday. She was 61.

Shinohara had been undergoing medical treatment for an unspecified illness, but despite efforts, the treatment was not successful. The funeral will be held by her close relatives.

Born in Fukushima Prefecture in August 1963, and raised in Ueda, Nagano, Shinohara discovered her passion for acting at a young age. She joined the drama and choir clubs during her elementary school years, and by junior high, she aspired to become an actor. After graduating from Ueda High School, she pursued her education at the Kunitachi College of Music, where she studied music education while participating in musicals.

Her journey into voice acting began when she joined a study group called Voice Arts, where she caught the attention of sound director Yasunori Honda. This opportunity led to her first major role as B-ko Daitokuji in the 1986 film Project A-Ko. Shinohara later joined the talent agency Arts Vision, and eventually 81 Produce, where her voice acting career flourished.

Shinohara's portrayal of Sailor Jupiter left a lasting impression on fans around the world. Her strong, yet compassionate voice gave life to the character's powerful and protective nature, making Sailor Jupiter one of the most beloved figures in the Sailor Moon series. As a key member of the Sailor Guardians, Shinohara's work resonated with audiences and continues to be celebrated by generations of anime enthusiasts.

In addition to her iconic role as Sailor Jupiter, Shinohara voiced several other notable characters throughout her career, including Kushina Uzumaki in Naruto: Shippuuden (Naruto Shippuden), Ophelia in Claymore, and Natsuhi Ushiromiya in Umineko no Naku Koro ni (Umineko: When They Cry).

She wasn't in many series I've watched but guess I could honor her by watching Hajime no Ippo again at some point. Kind of liked her voice acting in that despite not voicing that much in the series. RIP.

I'm aware of the running gag that almost all female legends of those years were involved in MariMite, but she also voiced a significant character there. In any case, my condolences. She is already the second veteran to leave us in these months.

This really came out of nowhere, and also not so long after Atsuko Tanaka also sadly passed away. What a tragedy. Her husband was also understandably devastated and so was Sailor Venus's original VA. May she rest in peace and hopefully her family doesn't suffers much.

@Illyricus I haven't followed SM staff for a long time, is Emi-san the first member of the project to pass away? I misread your comment at first and was afraid that something had happened to Minako's VA too.

@RobertBobert Minako's VA is fine, she's even voicing a character in the new Monogatari anime.
Also Shinohara is the first of the main scouts VA to go, though there are more Sailor Moon seiyuus who have unfortunately pass away. It's an old show, so it's expected.

@Illyricus It's still too hard for me to accept the original SM show as an old anime, it seemed like it was just "not very new". Although if you know, even AIR's female lead VA is no longer with us, unfortunately, although her main hits were later in the 00s.

That is not that old! Atsuko Tanaka recently passed at that age too. What the heck.

She voiced Kaho in Card Captor Sakura; she wasn't a prominent role but I liked her voice.

Rest in peace :(

People on MAL refuse to actually enjoy watching anime.

Your taste in anime isn't a personality trait.

MAL is literally just anime Twitter as its own website lol.

The most contact I have with her would be from her role in Umineko, due to the size of the VN, she has quite a lot of lines, and a compelling performance very much so in episode 5 (which is 25 hours long, not talking about an anime episode here).

I never watched much of Sailor Moon in Japanese, and her other roles pale to Umineko's quantity of dialogue for her.
Sad, she was still young.
