Just like how some anime might not hold up as well over time due to changing tastes, animation quality, or cultural shifts, can anime songs age poorly too? Have any of you noticed anime songs that you loved at the time but now find less appealing? Or are there any anime songs that you think have stood the test of time remarkably well?

Oh yea definitely there are some songs that I enjoyed at start but now dont even wanna hear.

Mashle - Bling Bang Bang Born ( maybe because it was everywhere I cannot hear it anymore without being annoyed)

Demon Slayer - Gurenge (Its not bad but compare to other OP that Lisa sings it just didn’t age the same)

Haikyuu - Fly High ( It was good at start but now it just boring to me)

theres a difference which the two above posters dont seem to realize between aging poorly and being played out. Old anime is stuck at low resolutions and can look like crap on modern TV screens which isnt really something that applies to music. So no, anime songs do not age poorly the same way as anime does.

Before being opening that's actually japanese music , and music doesn't "age poorly" so no.

Sure, music can age poorly. Music isn't created in a vacuum and reflects the time and place it was written. Certain sounds can come across as exceptionally dated and poor to modern ears. Production values in music change too, as do trends in studio tricks. There's always subgenres that are viewed with disdain that may have been popular (or at least had a following) in the past.

I don't know enough about Japanese music in general to really speak on it specifically but I don't see why it wouldn't be like anything else.

There are lots of cheesy pre-millennial anime songs only few people like nowadays, but others are still superb even for modern standards, such as

https://myanimelist.net/anime/47/Akira 's Kaneda theme.

Modern OPs offer literally nothing of worth compared to older anime music. Can't remember when I heard a recent anime OP that isn't the same J-pop lifeless artstyle.
Like, all the people hyping up YOASOBI or LiSA - what do they even have to offer that's new or original?

I think it's harder for songs to age poorly. Probably just the visuals of the anime opening, but that's it.

No. The anime is one thing, the anime music is other thing. For example: People praise to this day the domestic girlfriend opening while the anime is destroyed every time people talk about it.

There's a difference between aging poorly and being sick of listening to a song, it seems that some people here can't distinguish that difference.

I agree that an anime song can age poorly, if it's a product of its time, or if it's just bad in general. I've seen a majority of MVs already, there have been some absolute stinkers from before 2000. Especially the Avant Garde stuff.
So I've been banned from MAL-Badges, after spending nearly two years of my time and dedication to helping out, being the club's spokesperson, and planning for the revamp, it all goes down the fucking drain. What a joke the club has become. I advise everyone to stop using the feature and stop showing their support for the site and the club. We were promised that we will see changes come to the site, and nothing's been done for the past year. I doubt the site will be touched for the foreseeable future. If you're angry and annoyed about the lack of development, then good, you should be.

Mecha OP from the 70s and 80s are consider timeless classic Voltes V OP was lately voted by the Philippines as 3 most popular anisong outside of Japan. The new OP theme for the new Grendizer pales in comparison to the one from 1975.

@TheMechaManiac well, YOASOBI just have fun songs and while their music is somewhat repetitive (same structure for many songs) it works and the similarities can feel good. Also when you understand the blessing (G witch) is a reference to a cruel angel's thesis it's even more fun to listen to it, is YOASOBI the best thing ever? No, are they very nice to listen to? For me yes

I feel like some aged purely, I listened lately to Lum's love song (UY) and you feel that the style is from the 80s. Many songs were more like western anime ops by being directly about the show, they can be good in context but I'll almost never listen to them without watching the show unless they are really good (Tobe! Gundam is good in context of gundam but without the context it's bad)

Screw this mindset and I hope it dies
If the thing is good it's always good and the opposite can be true
You can't expect something already made to change to your "modern standards" , you gotta know it's old and treat it as such
Only thing aging well is maybe a physical copy you own of it or what you're watching it on but that's it
It's the same animated video ever since it came out

Aged like fine wine:

I can't think of any song that I liked back then and no longer like right now.

Dunno if this is the right answer (if it's on point), but I think that 90% of anime openings and endings are there just because the show needs an opening and an ending, which is why they have a very short life span – after the anime is finished airing, they're forgotten right away.

Kinda works with any music, though, because people's memory isn't that good nowadays and music is not something your brain prioritizes over other things.

DVDs and Blu-Ray discs can degrade over time, depending on factors like storage and exposure, but even physical copies can last well over a century if properly maintained. Outside of that context: anime doesn't age, people do. The ever-narrowing Overton Window of how a theme or subject can be portrayed to align with the fluctuating sensibilities of the fabled "modern audience" is not something that a fictional work should ever be held accountable for.

Regardless, music is timeless, not organic produce. A quality OP/ED will remain quality forever.

Amadeus Mozart, Joseph Haydn, and Ludwig van Beethoven have yet to go out of style and their music is ancient compared to even traditional Jazz music.

Anime music is still music. When I see a bunch of Western teenage brats these days listing to Japanese City Pop that was released over 40+ to 50 years ago (Basically music that has been around longer than they have been alive), just about anything can stand the test of time when it comes to music. Even if a song personally loses momentary appeal, likely a few years to decades later one will find themselves listening to it one day again just for the nostalgia.

Likely if any of you MAL Weebs and Otakus ever have kids, your children will one day be listening to music they never grew up with just because it suddenly becomes cool one day. Reminds me of the 1st time I found my daughter who was still in her teens at the time listening to a song by 'Taeko Onuki' in her bedroom when she was on school break. A song I only barely remember ever hearing play on the radio when I was in Japan in the early 80s.
