We're going to be performing heavy database maintenance on all the MyAnimeList servers at 10am on June 7th. I wanted to give everyone a heads up as this will result in the entire site coming offline.

Downtime is expected to last no more than an hour.

We're trying to make things run smoother for everyone, and this is just one of the first steps of many we're taking to accomplish that goal.

Thanks for understanding!

Edit: I meant to put June 7th. Sorry!

That will be an additional 15 hours to Xinil's timezone: June 8th, 1 AM in your timezone.

Edit: I forgot to take into account Daylight saving time, so it's 15 hours, not 16.

Of course, we are currently on BST, and BST is GMT +1, so it's actually 6pm, not 5pm for us Brits, hence why I can post this message right now.

The maintenance is over, but that annoying glitch which means you can't see the bottom of a database entry unless you refresh a lot is still there.

Let's hope the lag is fixed at least.

EDIIT: (21:04 BST)

Sigh... There's still lag here. MAL seems to be lagging by about 4 minutes at the moment.

Hopefully it won't be too bad.

Better luck next time, Xinil.

Because I really didn't notice a different and I'm usually lurking on MAL most of the time. >.>

afaik they only work on optimizing the database replication.... so there should be very little noticable... except that you'll have less database and editing errors.

however it still isn't perfect, as I still need to refresh my signature settings twice before they register. It does feel a little snappier though... maybe they just added another server and didn't change the replication much.

Well, I think there has been a performance increase, but it doesn't solve the issue. In fact, you're more likely to get 'bad id' and non-existent posts now since you only have a 1/4 chance instead of a 1/3 chance of getting the same server you posted to.... it's a race condition whether your post replicates to the other servers before your next request.

I think use of sessions would fix it though.

That's because the maintenance was on the 7th June, that wasn't a typo.

I'm pretty sure Xenil has it setup so there's one write master and the other 3 are read slaves. That's the most efficient scaling option for the current setup that I can guess with out further knowledge. The reason for this is because there's usually very very little writes, compared to reads (particularly for a site like this).

However it does seem you have the entire site on these 4 databases. While I can't say for sure, I'm somehow speculating that it would probably be better if the major bottlenecks are split between two or more server groups, instead of shared between all 4.

As I see it adding a extra server in a setup is where everything is fully shared, criples caching more, requires more resources for sharing data, while offering very little in return. Doubt you'll get any speed increase unless the previous servers were close to breaking point.

For fuck's sake why is it so difficult to have a functioning forum and database? What century are we living in? This must be the only forum on the entire internet that doesn't bloody work properly. I don't mind maintenance down time but what's the point if nothing is fixed when we're back up again!?

Just leave the site down otherwise MAL will lose all its users, they're already migrating to other sites as I type.
