Is this going to have the sadistic and cruel trainer/master trope? I've found they can be a bit obnoxious so I thought it best to ask here.

Well the reason is often why I find it obnoxious because more often than not it's just plain stupid. But if it's a good one then all's good.

As others said technically yes but they have a very good reason for it, since some might get turned off by it at first, i'll put what that reason is in a spoiler tag.

After having binged the first three episodes today I have to say that this wasn't bad. Harsh and brutal yes but not cruel nor sadistic. Even that recent healer cleric isekai with the strange drink was worse methinks. I'm glad this was well done.
