I watched recently 2 OVAs: one was Dragon Half it was a comedy and other was Midnight Goku Eye, it was very cheesy 90s in terms of story and some of the fighting scene was also quite sexual as well violent in nature. Dragon Half comedy was much better executed and it was the only enjoyable one here.
As for series; I finished the the OG Trigun and I have to say, it took me by surprise how serious and well written the story became. It was because filler (which was most of the first half) was light hearted and some time not well written and then when it got serious it didn't executed the back story properly even though the plot twist was very interesting. But in the last 7 episode the writers got grip of the story and made the time spend worth it.

102/112 if I remember correctly, so almost finish watching it.

@almightybismarck Yeah I agree, the dark tournament arc is so good, the second half is just ok to me.

I didn't like the second half as much as the first half because it was rushed in comparison. The build up to Toguro was more satisfying.

It could have been even great if they had taken the Angels seriously but it turn out the symbolism meant nothing they were just to be cool by Anno. So, they had no special meaning in the story or brought any special meaning to each fight. Like how many shows have enemy other provide context or it's own message in each of their fights.

I think the most recent one was Shoujo Kakumei Utena. A very nice series. I was impressed by all the metaphors and allusions, and the way they were implemented. I didn't fall in love with it or anything, but still had quite a nice experience overall.

okay i will come out and say it i always kind of assumed that me and older anime just arent compatible u know, id claim 'weird pacing' or whatever outdated stuff
but the longer i watch anime the more i venture into the past and at this point with time i got comfortable with mid 2000s stuff u know, but i always kind of preceived pre 2000s shows as a little intimidating u know
but... recently i discovered Oniisama e... and im fkn devouring it, its so amazing in every way and no longer i am hesitant bcuz of those weird feelings that a 1991 anime might be 'outdated' in some way
but this is my first 90s anime, and its early 90s at that, i think its a window for me to get more familiar with this type of shows, and ill be more comfortable to venture into even more 90s stuff and finally maybe something from the 80s lol but atm 80s seem like a no-no to me, im not ready yet, but yeah im slowly developing my weeb skill maybe thats why i can enjoy progressively older stuff

I found the 1999 version superior to the 2011, unpopular opinion those I'm sure.

My most recent ones are Serial Experiments Lain, which was an interesting trip, though I think I would have found it more unsettling and thought provoking had I watched it back when it first came out, as technology and our views on it have changed greatly since then.

And Perfect Blue, which was a very enjoyable murder mystery. Don't tend to watch a whole lot of movies, as I find it harder to get invested in the characters is such a short amount of time, but this one was good.

Many pre-2000s Anime aren't outdated in terms of story telling or animation. They simply use an abandon technique that still look beautiful today. As for Oniisama e; then you will be surprised how many shows exist that dwell into topic like these in the late 80s and the 90s. You will find a lot of stories to watch and if you do not like the animation then you can at least read the source material.

Yesterday I watched Hikyou Tanken Fam & Ihrlie, Ginga Ojousama Densetsu Yuna: Kanashimi no Siren, Gokicha!!, Cyber City Oedo, and Koutetsu Tenshi Kurumi

Gokicha was heartbreaking, Fam & Ihrlie was a hidden gem, and Kurumi sucked big ones.

2011 version focus on delivery the story completely how Togashi intended meanwhile the 1999 version fixed some of his mistake. Made the pacing more consistent by adding more detail which Togashi rush through because he get frustrated easily by Weekly Shounen Jump. And even the story telling was more consistent by being serious from the start. So, it's more enjoyable even with all the flaws because my brain have adjusted to it easily.

Armored Hunter Mellowlink. A pretty obscure anime from 1988 that has a wonderful artstyle. The story and characters are rather simple, but the main draw of the series is definitely the action.
Not as recent, but a few months ago I also watched an ova from the same year called Dragons Heaven. Pretty interesting story about a human girl bonding with a giant robot in a beautiful desert wasteland. And the mecha designs were great.

I am not watching a lot of anime lately, so maybe Otogizoushi is the closest thing - it's from 2004 tho.
Also the regular episode of Lensman (from 1984) which is fansubbed once in 6 months or so...and they have 3 more episodes to translate (in an year and a half or two?).

Yes, it's a stand-alone story, but it has some fun references, including a cameo (which doesn't make sense in the timeline) by the MC of Votoms.
Nothing wrong with that, I was just curious.
