We have all heard the memes, but do you actually do it?
What anime/manga did you watch/read for the plot, and not the "plot"?

I for one will defend Keijo for it's great character development, and that is not an euphemism for anything.
And my manga list started with Domestic Girlfriend, and went downhill from there...

I watch all anime for the real plot, I don't care about the "plot" so I am not like some known other users who watch for that kind of plot, after all a good plot is enjoyable and "plot" quite often is just boring.

Plot is the least important aspect in an anime, most people watch for waifu and animation, I'm one of them.
If you're a fanboy, please don't waste my time.

Watch more movies, please.

Kafka, Fu Xuan, Jingliu, Topaz and Huohuo.

Yes? I mean the quality of animation and music also matter but bad plot can ruin an anime for me to the point where I willl drop it.

It seems I was wrong in assuming all of us know the meme...
"I watch it for the plot" is the excuse people give when they get caught watching lewd shows, or straight up hentai.
But some of those actually have good plot.

Hh I'm well aware of the meme i was just thinking you were asking in general. Don't really like hentai tbh  but that's probably because I alwayes laugh at all japanesse porn(for what ever reason japanersee girls moan in very wierd way that alwayes crack me up). I don't mind echi as such unless it's overused "I've accidentaly seen your <<pantsu>>" motives. So if I ever whatch Echi it is for the "plot" and hentais I never watch.

I didn't see any basketballs, that was just a bunch of washboards(besides one) throwing their hands in the air for some reason...

Highschool of the Dead. I watched it considering it's a very popular ecchi series. And while I did like the ecchi and fanservice, I enjoyed it for the story mostly. I found it very exciting with the survival aspect of it. And I also enjoyed the action.

I honestly enjoyed the story and characters of the 1st season of shinmai maou. everything had a twist to it.
the 2nd season sucked because this dynamic changed. the mc was the one with the plot and he was offscreen most of the time.

I read manga or watch anime for the plot cause they just can't match doujins/hentai in terms of "plot"
Humans only live for a hundred years, it is as unreal as a dream that ends in an instant. What is the point of a person living in this world? No more than just being on a journey, and witnessing interesting things. Although I do not want to die, I do not fear death. I am already on my right path, I have no regrets even if I die.

Finding good writing where you less expect it is always a pleasant surprise. Aside from two well known masterpieces like Keijo and Ishuzoku Reviewers, the anime that impressed me the most in that regard are Futoku no Guild and Seikon no Qwaser.

I stopped expecting good stories from my anime. most of the really promising ones end with a whole bunch of unresolved conflicts. Houseki no Kuni for example. right when things started getting good... it ends. how frustrating. And dont even get me started on "problem children from another world". Damn, that had immense potential but we will never see a second season.

That's why SOL/Iyashikei is the best and most reliable genre. No pesky plot to worry about.

It depends on the type of show.
I watch action/thriller/psychological/mystery animes for the plot, and I usually doesn't like those where most of the time is spent on some girl boobas or whatev (ex.: Chainsaw Man).

But genres such as CGDCS? I watch it for my weekly dose of serotonin, not surely because of some impressive story.

Yeah, hentai anime is basically unwatchable.
But I'm digging the Korean Erotica genre.
Strictly for the plot.

I watch Redo Healer for the actual plot, or more specifically, Keyaru's character development and how he defeats some people stronger than him like that lesbian heroine, it was funny and creative.

He is not as bad as what most audiences have said about him.

What I didn't expect was World's end harem turning a hentai plot into legit good psychological character development.

It will naturally depend on the type of show we are dealing with. For plot-driven shows where the focus is clearly put on the development of an intricate premise, of course I will be watching it for that. Not so much for other shows where the main selling point is another aspect, like character likeability and interactions, cool action scenes, funny comedy scenes, ecchi scenes, and so on.

So I voted "no". Here's my reasoning, feel free to tell me I'm contradicting myself, or I'm just plain wrong.

I prefer character based stories and have close to no expectations of plot based stories.
If anything I look forward to the backstory of characters and the world, rather than the events "currently" occuring in the anime, as the story progresses.
Regarding any form of fan-service taking place, it's a nice distraction from a boring or generic plot.

It's important in a story-driven series, but overall not the most important aspect for me in an anime.

Keijo was great, my friend chose that as his first anime to watch just because of the episode titles, he said he loved it.
I watch it for the story as long as it doesn't have things I hate, endless battles that accomplish nothing, unkillable bad guy, guy who's a complete arsehole and awful to everyone, censorship, complete asspulls.

However I also love SoL like Non Non Biori which really doesn't have a story.

Well, first of all, identifying the reason why I want to continue watching something is not a prerequisite for continuing watching it. I don't bother with such analysis. For whatever reason, dopamine was released, and my brain's dopamine addiction triggered a feeling of wanting to watch the next episode. Analyzing what made me enjoy it is unnecesary, and possibly may not even lead to the right answer.

But if I had to analyze it, I'd say enjoying the plot of an anime (or any story in general) falls mainly into two categories. Either it uses plot devices that you find satisfying, thus you anticipate a pattern of such enjoyable plot devices continuing. Or alternatively, the plot is either mysterious or unpredictable (yet not too illogical) enough that you really want to know what happens next even if you cannot predict it at all. The former is definitely more common as it is fairly easy to achieve by heavily lending plot devices from previous works and tuning them a bit. The latter is less common and harder to pull off since lack of originality can ruin it, and it's harder to come up with something that appears more original.

Aside from plot, there are characters. Sometimes character interactions are enough to make an anime satisfying without the need for an overarching plot to be particularly good or maybe even exist at all. I would say most things I enjoy are a mix of common satisfying plot devices and common satisfying character archetypes and their interactions with each other, the exact ratio between these is hard to tell. One thing is for certain though - anime that genuinely has an intriguing enough plot to lure you in because you really want to find out what unpredictable thing will happen next is fairly rare. It is attempted quite often, but usually falls flat on its face due to being either too ridiculous or trying to be too deep.
