I'm studying japanese recently and found that the kanji for the title (七つの大罪) is actually read as dai (大) zai, not taizai. Is there a term or way to read (e.g. rendaku) so it reads as taizai not daizai?

大 can be read both as tai and dai. No rendaku involved. In this case it's tai because... well it says so in the cover so it must be right.

Both variations exist. Daizai is a serious crime, usually something that is punished by 10+ years of prison or death.
Taizai is a religious term. Translates into cardinal sin. That is why this series uses Taizai because the main characters are based on the seven cardinal sins of the Bible.

Welcome to the world of Kanji! You are just going to have to memorize pronunciations on a case-by-case basis. There's this thing called onyomi (Chinese pronunciation) and kunyomi (Japanese pronunciation). Depending on how the kanji is used the way it's said will change.

Typically, however, it follows a pattern like so:

1. If the kanji is by itself, use kunyomi
2. If the kanji is used in a compound word use onyomi

Of course some kanji even have multiple kunyomi or onyomi, but for the most part of that is the general rule. So yes like was already said 大 can be pronounced both ways. Hope this helps and good luck!

I just realized that the on-read for 大 is both dai and tai, tbh its really hard to know where and when each pronunciations should be used, so thanks a lot for the explanations!!

Like many kanji in Japanese, depending on what word or where the kanji is placed depends on the reading. I read it as taizai but that’s just because I’m used to reading kanji now so I don’t really question it.

After a while, you just naturally get a feel for which reading to use. Sometimes you’ll be wrong and sometimes you just know it’s correct because it just sounds wrong or you just instinctively know how it’s read cause of how many other examples that kanjis been used in.

It takes time but you’ll get used to it. I recommend when you learn a new word/kanji that goes with it, try not to learn every single onyomi reading that the kanji uses in one go. Sure have a look to see what other readings it uses but It’s always best to learn the less common readings naturally when you learn a new word. If you do it this way, you’ll learn kanji much quicker than trying to memorise like 5 different readings most of which you’ll never come across.

But to answer your question, the kanji for “large” 大 it can be read as タイ and ダイ and thank fully nothing else in terms of the onyomi readings.
