Was it instant or did it take awhile? Did you become instantly smitten with the medium or was there a slow burn?

The period where you basically knew you were an otaku.

I'm not sure. My first anime was likely Astro Boy when I was really young because my dad is a massive weeb and showed me his favourite shows. I've always been into anime so I guess it was immediate

There was a gap of [however many years between when Pokémon hit North America and 2019] years.

So like 20 some odd years.

If you aren't counting anime for children then it was like 8 years.

Roughly a decade for me. First seen a few of the Macross episodes of Robotech on a VHS tape when I was 6 or 7 years old. Turned full-blown anime fan dabbling into Toonami and Adult Swim's anime block during the early 2000s.

My first seen anime was dbz and IT WAS BRUTAL or nearly disturbing for me as a kid seeing gohan a child getting beaten up and pummeled on the ground by some orange guy and green dude lol. (It was just gohan's training) I also don't have any idea what the hell is going on and what the living hell is anime. I thought it was just some cartoon but realistic people drawn probably too complex for me as a dumb kid. Now I'm beginning to like One Piece after like 11-12 years old started getting into some other stuff.

Well I was watching Speed Racer and Voltron in '96/'97 and I didn't know they were Americanized version of old anime. In addition I watched Akira and the Ghost In The Shell movies in the same time frame. I didn't get into anime until I started watching Sailor Moon and DBZ a year later in '98 and that's when I became a fan.

If you mean kids anime, then 5 years. If you count some teen anime like death note, then two months. Kinda became a weeb after assasination classroom because it was the first time ever i got emotional watching a show.

19 years. First anime I really watched and became familiar with was Pokemon; I'm not exactly sure when I stopped but I got sucked into gaming instead in about 2008 and was never into it at the same level today. I really delved into it again in 2018 when I watched Made in Abyss and that's when my love and appreciation for anime storytelling truly established itself.

Almost 20+ years .... Technically the very first anime I watched was Captain Majid aka Captain Tsubasa 😁 when I was 4 years old and over the years I watched so many content like Pokemon, Dragon Ball, Beyblade etc..But it was until late 2020 when I finally started realising that the anime are more than just regular cartoon shows and developed actual love for animes. Not only that even I started learning Japanese and developed love for Japanese culture itself. My long time wish is visit east asians countries like Japan, China and Korea someday....and it is not only just because of the anime

Technically, it was 13+ years between seeing some anime in the late 80s like Taro the Dragon Boy, Voltron, Sherlock Hound, and the Mouse and His Child* and 2003, the year I mark as my official start as an anime fan. But if measured from the first time I saw anime I knew to be "anime," it would be more like 5 years between seeing Sailor Moon and that 2003 date.

13+ years. When I was a toddler, I would watch Doraemon and Ikkyuu-san with my mother. Then growing up, I would only casually watch Naruto and Dragonball Z whenever it was on TV. But I didn't really get into it until a few years ago.

It was something like 2-3 months between when I was properly introduced to anime and when I became a full blown fan. Also important to note is how big a leap of consumption I had between my first two years. The year I started watching anime I only saw 60 anime and the year after I saw 300, so 5x as many.

At the very beginning I remember telling myself that this was just going to be another casual hobby and that I wouldn't get too into it like some people are. Boy was I wrong.

It... kind of depends on what I call my first anime. See, I watched My Hero Academi back near the beginning of Spring 2018, and that was pretty much where my anime journy began. Because of this, when asked what my first anime was, I usually say My Hero Academia, because it was the first anime of when got into anime. The thing is, I had previously seen 4-5 anime, in sub, and knowing they were anime, including at least to the beginning of Zou in One Piece. I had watched them over the course of so many years, that I kind of just saw them the same as incidental watches that happened to be anime, like Sonic x, Kirby: Right Back At Ya, and Spirited Away, which I had only watched in dub before. If I do count them, then One Piece would be my first anime, and it would have been 3-5 years before I got into anime.

I got nightmares from Little Nemo as a kid I think that was my first anime we owned it on VHS I was maybe 4/5 then when Pokemon first aired in the US I was watching I was around 8. Then I watched DBZ, I used to rent random volumes on VHS from Blockbuster which was likely 9 or 10 years old. Beyond that I saw random anime, whatever aired on TV.

It wasn't until somewhere between Inuyasha and Wolfs Rain airing in the US that I became a fan so I was 12-14, those were the discovery years where I branched out into manga, got Rosetta Stone for Christmas to learn Japanese, started saving for merch and DVDs, etc. Then by 16 I was attending conventions and very active on forums and chatrooms.

Hmm, about 2-3 years for me. I started watching anime casually in 2012 (not counting random episodes of DBZ, Pokémon and Yu-Gi-Oh! that I caught on TV back when I was a kid in the early '00s btw), but it wasn't until 2014-2015 or so that it became one of my main hobbies.

A whole 10 year gap. From Pucca in June 2008 - Late Summer 2018 when I was consistently watching Dragon Ball, a few other shows and a bunch of hentai and actually genuinely getting into the medium. I could make an argument for 2015 being the year I got into it but to be honest that was me getting more into Dragon Ball itself than anything else, although anime styled stuff was becoming of interest to me, like Yandere Simulator among other things.

I was first exposed to anime in 2007 with Pokémon and Dragon Ball Z Kai. Aside from a few episodes of the former in 2011 I didn't watch any anime. Then in 2015 YouTube kept recommending me anime videos and I became interested enough to watch Death Note and Erased. I've been hooked ever since. So basically it was a good 8 years in between my first exposure and actually getting into the medium.

probably 2~4 years. it all began with MACROSS/ROBOTECH in late-1995~1996;
first a Mecha Model, and then a handful of ROBOTECH VHS Volumes;

getting gradual tastes of Anime and Manga from thence onward,
liking what i was seeing ever more, and gradually getting more Focused/Obsessed,
rapidly moving away from my teenhood flirtation with U.S. Comics (SPIDER MAN and SONIC THE HEDGEHOG, predominantly) and WARHAMMER 40k.

by 2000, i was ALL in, no question about it.

and... Today? just a tiny fraction of my Anime Collection;

Make no mistake about it though; MACROSS was where it all began;

This is hard for me to answer because it's instant but also many years.

Pokemon was my first anime and when I played the games first then watched the anime, collected the cards, etc. I was obsessed and became a big fan of just Pokémon at the time. But I wasn't really aware of anime yet. So if that doesn't count since I was instantly a fan of Pokemon/anime via that, but other anime I'd casually watch here and there throughout the years, but I also got really into JRPGs after Pokemon and I was obsessed with them. (Interactive anime imo).

I played them for years one after another and still play them often today.

So Pokemon I got into in the late 90s as a kid, I'd watch maybe an average of one anime a year after that until around 2012 or 2013. This is the time when I really watched a bunch of anime every year since. So I wouldn't consider myself as a really big fan/weeb of anime until around 2013-ish. That's approximately 15 years after watching Pokemon.

I used to watch anime in my childhood and I used to love it without knowing that it was anime. I dont think I would consider myself a weeb at that time. I became a weeb around 10 years later when I found other anime again and I instantly became a degenerate.

I watched my first anime (doraemon or dbz) in 2011, but it was super casual. I had no idea what even anime was. For me back then dbz and sonic newgrounds animation both fell under "cool bizarre cartoons" and were no different than other animated series like adventure time, regular show, teenage turtles, etc

Iirc in 2015 I was a big pokemon anime-games-manga fan and in 2016 I liked dragon ball super & food wars but I was still wasn't that much of a fan of the medium in general

I became an actual (obsessed) anime fan in 2018 (after watching op) and a manga fan in 2019 (after reading jojo)

I didn't really start indulging in anime until AoT back in the early 2010s. Back then, access to anime was nonexistent for me anyways. At least not until I discovered ways watch stuff. I remember watching those Ghibili films as a kid because my mother loved them and made me watch them. But yeah, probably years of gap.

A big fan is someone that dosen't have rules in their head about to watch.
And has nothing to do with the amount of years you have watched Anime.

I can't watch it because it's old, I can't watch it because it got a female mc, I can't watch it because it's not shiny, I can't watch it because it's no fighting, I need Shonen and only Shonen.
Fantasy sucks, All Isekai sucks. <- this is 99% of this community and they are no anime fans, just big shonen tards, that we should pity.

And people to say they are weeb just use it as a excuse to add like monkeys on the internet.

Hmm let's see. I watched my first anime in either late 2014 or early 2015, and though I got into anime and watched several series after that, it was only when I watched Death Note in either late 2015 or late 2016 that I decided I was REALLY into anime. So it took about 1.5-2 years

I watched the first anime in the mid 90s, but back then I didn't even know there was such a thing as anime. Even years later when I watched Pokémon, Digimon and the mid-00s localized mahou shoujo. I became a pure anime fan only at the end of the decade.

Quite a bit of time.

I distantly remember having watched spirited away as a child, because I had nightmares of my parents turning into pigs afterward.
I must have been 7 or 8 years old.

After that came the other Ghibly movies because they were shown on television on the evenings of weekends. I think I was around 13 when that happened.

Really realizing what anime was and starting to watch it happened later. I think I was around 15 or 16.
