Should Anime writers start stating the ages & birthdays of characters?

State the ages of all their primary and secondary characters. Characters that play a significant role in the show

Only if it has any relevance to their plot. But also in other form of media (Konosuba Fantastic Days celebrates all these birthdays yet I still don't care other than cashing in the rewards)

I've seen fans 'celebrate' characters' birthdays whenever they have been stated. I find it pretty cool that Senku from Dr. Stone has a birthday that was said in story, so there's that. Natsuki Takaya-sensei, creator of Fruits Basket, has recently stated that she regrets not giving her character's birthdays after she saw fans celebrating what they believe was their date of birth. So it's really up to the mangaka if they want to include that information. There's a lot of school-based anime so age is usually implied based on school grade/year. Overall, it'd be cool if they would though!

it's already a thing writers and authors have been doing for years tho, people like Eiichiro Oda states outside of the story characters ages every now and then and one piece characters get their birthdays chosen by fans and such, if it's a plot that goes over several years in series then the characters age usually gets mentioned as well.

it's usually not a major thing to consider plot wise i'm chill if it's stated outside of the show though

Yes, that makes avoiding animes that have a child cast for absolutely no reason much easier.

Totally. In fact, I was thinking about this recently. It would make lots of things concerning the character backgrounds and the story so much easier to understand.

I tend to over think minor details mentioned in passing and want answers to them. I can't bring any specific ones to mind, but a lot of them were age/relationship related (as in relationships between characters)

I think it would be better to have it, but I don't mind it so much if it is not there.

Writers can do whatever the heck they want. It's their story. Surely there are those who have a want for such information, but it's not always relevant otherwise. And writers might have bigger things to concern themselves over.

It's not important so I don't care whether authors do that or not.

They actually do that most of the time, especially in romances.

Maybe in action stories they don't cause that's not that relevant to the action focus of these types of series.

I think it is often pointless and even harmful sometimes.

Say you like character and wants to make her your waifu, but then anime states she is underage. Then it makes it awkward, (my waifu when she grows up then)

Zodiac too can be confusing, not every author understand zodiac well and sometimes will give character a birthday with a zodiac that is not matching them at all.

Sometimes it could make sense if it plays some role in the story, but otherwise it is not useful at all.

Nah, I'll forget them as soon as I started reading or watching. Especially in mangas and Light Novels. At the onset of their series, they list all these details that I frankly don't care about. I would rather learn it through the chapters and texts.

No, who cares about the fictional age of an fictional character. Also most anime already do that more or less by stating in which grade the character is.

doesn't matter if they do. though if they mention their birth day then it's nice so we can remember our fav character on their bday. i still think about harry and maybe watch a movie or read a book on 31st july.

They do state them quite often, although I think that the most effective way to reveal additional character details is in the story. I suppose it's nice to know blood types, dominant hands and horoscope sings and height's sometimes.

They should reveal more important information, like the dick size of every character. I think only Golden Kamuy has done that so far.

I mean...it's cool to know small details like that about characters, but it doesn't really matter either way. I don't really care about the specific ages or birthdays of characters unless it's relevant to the plot or something

Like everything, it depends on execution, characters randomly bringing out their age for no good plot reason would just look bad.

It's a fun tidbit in character profile, no need to force it in a show if it has nothing to do with the story though.

There's shows I've seen of characters that I still have no idea how old they are and would like to know, but it's not really relevant, because the one I'm thinking of is dead anyway, despite her short relationship to another character that was younger than her, but was killed before she was so....
