Trust me, it'll happen, and it'll hit hard when it happens. It never leaves the boundaries of being an episodic series, but it does have some really good emotional moments.

Or the cow episode. Laughing while also being sad and crying is a very unique experience that no other anime has given me.

I am still keeping hope for After You've Gone.

They totally ruined the Kumino Otoko episode this week by including Mendo into the story, changing motivations, and making it 12 minutes long instead of 22. I was very disappointed, considering that the original one is one of the first episodes that I really liked.

I am keeping hope because they definitely can't ruin After You've Gone this badly.

"Well ackchyually" time.

In the manga, Mendo is actually there. Yeah, that's something the 1981 anime changed from the original, not this adaptation.

Oh. Well, I didn't know that. I am still watching the original anime and haven't read the manga yet.

But I'd still say the 1981 anime did it better, if the original manga was like this week's episode. Mendo might be my favorite character, but he doesn't belong in that story.

Having the others actually "supporting" Ataru with the letter is not really that fun compared to them maliciously baiting him to embarrass him. The 1981 anime version also gives Lum's character much more weight in the episode, and also develops her quite a bit.

I usually like the original manga better than anything else, but I'd 100% go for the anime version here, which brought that story from "just another Urusei Yatsura episode", to one that I'll always remember when I take the name of this show.

My biggest problem with the current adaptation is that Megane hasn't even been mentioned once by name yet. Like, he's clearly in the adaptation, but they're just not utilizing him. I'm still really enjoying the remake, but I get the sad feeling that there won't be many Megane moments.

As said earlier by another user, the original manga was like that, with Mendo and everything else you have seen ... only real difference is the name of the 'fake' lover, which was "Shinobu" Something (don't remember :D !) and not "Kumino Otoko", cool OG anime idea !

I personally prefer this version, being closer to the manga, also some details in the OG anime I didn't like much (for example Lum electrocuting the hired girl)

I'm with you. Bunch of reasons:

- Lum has a gift for Ataru (adds power to the ending)

- Shocks his friends for suggesting she drops him, even after he acts like a jerk

- Her feelings are crushed when she learns he's going to meet another girl. In the manga/new anime, it's played as a joke. To which I'll say, sacrificing Lum's faithfulness for Ataru-wont-care jokes has never been good for her character. When you have a top waifu like Lum, you preserve her top waifu score. Don't make her seek comfort on another guy's shoulder, it's never worth it as a setup for humor.

- "Otoko" accepts money to shame Ataru and make him look stupid. She's an evil woman. She meets Lum with an expression of "who are you, you're nothing". She deserved what she got, and it is extremely satisfying. One of the rare occurrences where Lum shocks another girl.

- Ataru gets an off screen kiss from Lum and Megane's hair turn white, his plan hilariously backfired. Again, satisfying

- Christmas theme, snow, that last frozen shot and everything, but I must admit the new episode was pretty strong too with the sunset and colors

Yup.

Also the main theme itself of Lum sticking up for Ataru even though the other friends are actually doing it "for her" is very satisfying to watch, and makes After You've Gone even better.

The new/original one just seems like another prank gone wrong which Lum corrected for 10,000 yen.

I'm pretty sure Bottled Letter Seashore Mystery (Episode 69 in 1981 adaptation, nice) is going to be adapted, so I'm pretty excited for that one. Shinobu plays a decently big role in that episode. Definitely not an emotional episode, but I'm kinda struggling to remember Shinobu having any sad moments throughout the whole series.
