Normally, when shows get a great adaptation, their anime will have higher scores than their source material by a noticeable margin.

you can see it with countless shows: demon slayer, My Dress-Up Darling ,summer time render, chainsawman, spy x family, love is war, ,and those are just the ones that came out this year.

In the cases when it doesn't happen, the manga is either further ahead and the anime hasn't reached the best parts yet, or more commonly, there is a certain thing that people like less in the adaptation. the slower pacing of monster in the anime is a good example for that.

now made in abyss's adaptation, is basically perfect. it has really good animation.

it has some of the best background art in anime.

it has masterful directing, and even improved the pacing of the s2 arc from what I have heard.

it has top notch voice acting, and one of the best soundtracks in all of media.

so how come, not a single entry of the anime is as highly rated as the manga.

are those few not adapted chapters just THAT good, or is there another reason that I am missing?

for s1, I thought it may be the bias of only the people who like series reading the manga.

but after 2 anime entries, I'm pretty sure the people who hate the series should have been filtered out, at least to a large enough degree to not make a big difference.

Dunno, but I'd say 1. Most of the people reading the manga probably came from the anime because they liked it so much, so the manga will naturally have a higher score, 2. kinda similar but the anime has a lot more people watching it than the manga has people reading it so the score will naturally be more inflated with the manga, 3. Keep in mind the scores are hardly that far apart, so I think the first point alone is enough to balance it out.

I mean the first 2 reasons are the case with most manga to anime adaptation though, including all the examples.

if it worked like that, wouldn't all mangas have higher scores than their anime counter part?

like the argument is sound, I just don't see why it has only applied to this series in particular

Yeah, which is why I started with "I dunno." I don't really understand why either. Maybe the case of made in abyss is just more extreme than other shows with the amount of people reading the manga coming from the anime.

There's probably many other reasons, but I personally prefer the manga by a considerable amount and the main reason for that is the paneling and the art. The anime nails the colorful and fancy parts, but while it certainly does the dark parts well, it never quite reaches the feeling these moments emit in the manga.

For example when you meet Ouzen for the first time, there's these panels where she's super close to the POV and her face distorts and blurs and it evokes an unnerving kind of feeling that isn't there in the adaption.

Or the moment where Riko bleeds from her eyes in Volume 3. The panels get distorted and messy when she starts to hallucinate and then you turn the page and half of it is her face with her eyes black holes of blood. This kind of style is probably super hard to recreate in animation without making it look goofy.

This way of using style, panels and even the speech bubbles to create atmosphere is what sets it apart for me.

Another little bonus the manga has, especially in the beginning, is the little info pages in between chapters with extra world building. They give dynamic to the world and make the little details feel much more real and meaningful than in the anime.
