I have to admit, this anime so far has a catchy OP theme song.

Episode was definitely entertaining imo for its character personalities. Something about the voice acting also sounds appealing, especially for Bunko especially on stage. Feels like this episode acted out like a play but with a story.

Not sure yet how I feel about Mameda but so far, I find Bunko more entertaining.

GARNiDELiA's back for another OP, and this is more towards their new style, which I'm OK with. Hinano's ED sounds nice though.

The story starts off with a Tanuki known as Mameda departing to Osaka, and as raccoons tend to be, they are tricksters. But the people in Osaka are smart enough not to get tricked, especially this girl who's a [i]Rakugo-ka[i] a.k.a Rakugo storyteller. And Bunko Daikokutei is one such famed storyteller with a huge crowd sprawling at her Rakugo performance, with Mameda being enthralled and tricked instead.

But Mameda is a tanuki, not a flying squirrel, and of all the people, Bunko saved her life being a fox who also wants to trick people, but with her rakugo instead. And this sets a fire in her to become a [i]Rakugo-ka[i] also.

Nice to have the Rakugo tales presented by Mameda to give some context shown every episode. Above all else, I'm looking forward to seeing Mameda's character evolution.

Pretty chill episode. Reminds me of The Eccentric Family (Uchouten Kazoku). Let's see how it goes.

EDIT: The rakugo performance has lots of puns that is hard to translate... I don't really find that funny. But then Mameda's explained the performance at the end of the episode, but I'm still confused. There's lots of Japanese culture-related stuff and folktales stuff which I'm not too familiar with.

The tanuki form of Mameda is very cute even though her personality is quite naughty. I hope she will behave at least a bit better in the future while staying with Daikokutei Bunko.

yeah..... Rakugo is a verbal performance that has a lot of word plays, puns, and a lot of cultural references. That's why it will be very difficult for non-Japanese to understand it even with a description.

Imo you actually have to be Japanese to find it funny. I'm pretty confident that I could understand it well enough, but still, perhaps it's more of a cultural than a language issue. The anime was really entertaining regardless, I already love Mameda and looking forward to her journey of becoming a rakugoka.

Her rakugo performance was not on the same level as Kikuhiko's or Sukeroku's from Shouwa Genroku but, I guess, in every episode we will get a new performance so there is still time for the seiyuu of Daikokutei to shine. Anyway I will definitely love this show.

The ED was catchy:

She is a bake-kitsune, a fox spirit who has considerable magical powers, like for example divination (according to the old folk tales). Most likely she knew what would happen.

This is pretty promising! I like Taisho period settings, the blue-haired rakugoka looks like a cool character, and there's a slightly melancholy feel at points that I hope will be sustained.

The anchor pattern joke hinges on the Japanese verb nagareru:
https://jisho.org/search/%E6%B5%81%E3%82%8C%E3%82%8B

The first woman says:
kaze ga fuite mo, nagaren you ni = It won't blow away even if there's a wind

The second woman says:
shichi ni irete mo, nagaren you ni = I can't get rid of it even if I take it to a pawn shop

...or something like that.

So this is the anime that require understanding Japanese language because the subtitle is not gonna cut it no matter how good the translator is, even the after credit segment only explain half of the joke, or even less than half... but considering that even an anime about making a Japanese dictionary like Fune wo Amu can deliver me a good time despite I don't understand Japanese, I kinda expect this anime to do the same, plus tanuki is always fun to have around, I don't think it can top eccentric family because this anime has a much bigger language barrier, but it has the same spirit. The spirit of tanuki wanting to trick human despite risking itself to be cooked in a hot pot.

Also, if I remember correctly Rakugo occupation was exclusively male industry until this century so I'm wondering if this anime is trying to break a gender barrier or something? Or is the audience really believe that the blue hair girl is a guy?

At first I thoight she's tengu (because of lingering expectation from eccentric family, tanuki and tengu make a nice duo) but other comment already spoil us that she's...

Uchouten Kazoku + Shouwa Genroku Rakugo Shinjuu

Pretty nice start, our female tanuki is charming and I love the japanese-esque flair. Opening is also very fun on the first watch, this one won't be skipped. And nice post credits trivia.

I think the fact that I've watched Shouwa Genroku Rakugo Shinjuu not too long ago kind of dooms this show from the outset for me, because there is pretty much no way whatsoever that the rakugo performances in this could live up to that. And I know it's not at all fair to compare, but the thought just would not leave my mind throughout Bunko's performance and the comparison just ends up being distracting. Though, even without such a comparison, I'm not sure this was an overly good rakugo performance at all: there wasn't enough variance in her tone, accent and talking speed to sell that she was performing separate roles, and it sounded like she was just rushing through it rather than carefully telling the story. This show also lacks those smaller moments of character animation during the rakugo performance to add that extra spark to it that really sells the performer as the characters they perform as.

And yet, I honestly don't think this premiere was that bad at all. It certainly did enough to keep me sticking around for another couple of episodes at least, and hopefully in time it can do enough to distinguish itself in my mind from SGRS.

I like the premise, but so far it's a bit dull. Rakugo I think is generally better appreciated by western audiences than, say, manzai, but the best effort translations of the wordplay still dampen what comedy this does have. Will give it a little more, but I'm not expecting much.

I didn't get the dirty anchor joke so I'm thankful haha ^7^;

From what I remember too I think Rakugo is made up of a lot of different classic stories and each Rakugoka performs it slightly differently so the end session is almost like a lesson on Rakugo itself and the specific stories they told?

Oh! And I thought it was good, I'd actually give it an 8 so far on first episode. Solid, my expectations were extremely low considering I thought this would be a drop. It's super charming

Yes the melancholy is definitely there. The poem Daikokutei quoted when she saved the falling tanuki was written by the Retired Emperor Sanjo after his forced abdication. There is a strong yearning in it after the past, a world long gone. I loved these kind of references in the episode.

LOL this was kind of funny.

It sure is a hard time for Tanuki's, humans are cleverer in their world now and can't be tricked anymore.

The Rakugo part was really funny at times, not all jokes hit but some did.

They really put an explanation of the Rakugo at the end though lmao.

I liked the ED a lot more than the OP, OP is decent but ED is fire.

Overall, a decent episode.

The end of an era. Thank you Wit, Mappa and Isayama.
Feeling half happy, half sad.

That was a fun enough episode, Tanuki in anime are so damn cute.

I really like the OP/ED, especially the ED music.

Mameda is cute, not overly bright but just wants to trick people in an ever changing world
It was more than hinted at in the OP at what Bunko is, i did like her sad talk at how the way is and advancing there will be no need to them anymore... /sad

It was good they mentioned the era, so looking at the style of dress everyone is wearing its around 1926-30ish - as 1926 was the end of the Taisho era

I will certainly keep watching

Looks to be one of those shows that doesn't hit as hard without understanding the cultural references and humor. You can get the gist of it but some things just don't translate as well. I don't mind these shows as long as the characters are somewhat interesting since the comedy doesn't do it for me so I'll give it a few more weeks. It reminds me of Uchouten Kazoku without the insufferable MC.

Earlier in this case does not mean better. Joshiraku uses rakugo simply as a setting, while Shouwa Rakugo literally explores this theme.
