I love Ao ashi, I watched the anime first and decided to catch up with the manga, and it was amazing.
After catching up with the manga, I noticed that the matches are less exciting than they are portrayed in the the manga.
Is it just me?

It's a problem with every manga adaptation really. When you read manga you see still pictures and your mind fills in the blanks - imagining the 'motion'. In anime form there's not any leeway for that - you have to portray the 'motion' through animation - which is directly correlated with the amount of resources allocated (budget? time? animator manpower? tech?)

You feel hype reading the manga because it's great, but then you watch the anime and see that the animation isn't special and you don't feel the excitement you had when you read the manga. You also know what's going to happen so the excitement of surprise goes away as well.

I suppose not every manga is gonna be animated in an over the top way like Demon Slayer. The animation actually fills in the blanks between the manga's still pictures and goes further beyond that.

In this case, an original anime or a light novel / novel adaptation has the advantage since there's no visual standard to compare the anime to, within the viewer's mind.

Edit: Basically.. anime-onlys have an advantage when it comes to enjoying an anime adapted from manga. Coming from a 'the manga is better' guy.

The late half of the episodes have consistent animations. The earlier ones were pretty underwhelming, ngl.

100000%, I mean once you’ve seen sports anime like Haikyuu or Ippo and then you see this… it’s def underwhelming. There hasn’t been a single amazing goal so far. I keep waiting for something amazing to happen…. But it seems like 20+ episodes of build up with nothing great happening.

I do hope some later episodes impress me.

Ao Ashi is never reliant in flashy move in the first place. There is some scenes in the manga that got you hype reading it, but I understand that it's literally impossible to translate those scenes into anime with the same impact..
For me, as a football fan, one thing that make me enjoy Ao Ashi more than any sports manga is its great attention to detail. The first time they mention about "spaces" I know Ao Ashi is special, since football is all about "spaces" and "times", not just scoring a goal..

Even as a manga reader, I'm still enjoying for what the anime has to offer. The earlier episodes in terms of animation were not the best but the 2nd half make up for it.

You don't need flashy moves or effect to have decent to great animation lol.
I am an anime only who had been suppressing the disappointment but at this point, I feel sorry for my former self who was so hyped to know that Prod. IG woud be animating this (granted, even then I didn't expect highly innovative animation but neither did I think they would deliver this either..)

Those slick passing sequences, running/dribbling sakuga, creative storyboards and smart perspectives, more oomph in the players being represented as coins or eagle eye sequences, using animation to show and not tell all the time with multiple stills and numerous speed lines. Feints, delicate body movements, more realistic animation of colliding/sliding with the players or ground.

The list goes on and on. Y'know, if done well (not even super super well), these are much more satisfying and adrenaline-pumping than those often cheap effects animation.)

In conclusion, not like any of this stains the source in any way! But damn do I not feel for what was lost or rather was never gonna be captured by staff in the first place but I am unaware of their circumstances and Prod. IG hasn't been in best shape anyhow so please don't take this as me criticising the staff.. ๐Ÿ™

I don't think so , they are doing good job with anime adaptation , i can tell it helped me to think that way , the way they are telling story , focus, camera , music etc ... this anime is hidden gem to me after i get bored about shounen power boosted , routine silce of life animes . Not over exaggerated or weak , it flavoured well .

yeah. I think the animation kinda lack of "impact". The way manga drawn made every kick has weight and I can feel the impact. While the anime kinda stale most of the time.

Good example imo is Kaneda's long shoot which hit the bar in the latest eps, I can kinda feel the power of that kick. Roan's kick (the black dude from Esperion) is also quite good. Other than that, most of the kick isn't good animated imo.

I think for manga panels just have more time for storytelling too, while anime they might have to rush it a bit to get it done in 1 or 2 eps.

As an anime-only, I’ve felt like the animation has been solid during matches

"One touch" scene from match between core lineup and guys from exam is so damn great. No unnecessary effects, just pure movement. It makes it realistic and impressive.

there have definitely been some amazing goals. You just haven't been able to appreciate them because you probably think all amazing goals are supposed to be some rocket into the top corner or something. I would say Aoi's cross for Togashi's header was a pretty amazing goal.

Yoshitsune also scored an amazing goal as well

I'm not too fussed about animation. I'm just happy that a good football anime is being adapted. Same thing for Blue lock. I'm glad that a decent studio is picking that up as well.

The animation is good to be honest.

In the manga they show you the most important frames … you don’t get to see them running in general and looking around.

Obviously the anime needs all these details.

I am afraid you want hyped frames all the time — then you would probably like Inazuma eleven; they kick fire balls so…
