My favourite part was Irina getting Lev to spill all the misconceptions and stereotypes he had about vampires on the spot.

I like that it was pointed out that the UZSR's space program was decentralized when compared to the UK's and that this led to competition between the leading scientists and engineers. The biggest enemy of space exploration came from within.

In the LN, Zirnitra's map is based on the real Soviet Union's

  • Liltto = Baltic states (I would have guessed Moldova)
  • Sangrad=Moscow
  • Albinar=Baikonur, Kazkahstan

Real Cyrillic is used as opposed to the fictional Cyrillic-inspired alphabet in the anime (Zirnitra is explicitly socialist when its full Russian name is read out).

I feel like there was aspects that the Anime did better than the light novel as far as pacing and how scenes played out. For example, when lev first meets Irina i feel the coffin scene has much more "punch" than the rather mundane first meeting in the LN, but that itself was probably a very deliberate choice; contrast the fearful image of the vampire with the mundane young girl etc. I do think lev and irina both have significantly more character to them in the LN, though, and the scene you mentioned about misconceptions was a good example of this. They certainly feel more alive.

It's rather interesting to me to find out that liltto is supposed to the the Baltics, and i suppose the comparison of Jews to the Vampires makes sense then. The baltics (particularly Lithuania) were major centers of Judaism as a result of the Pale of Settlement during imperial times, and if vampires are to be seen as Haredi (in Lithuania they would be Litvak and not Hasidic) then the idea of them living "like medieval times" has some merit, even now many haredim dress in the clothing of polish-lithuanian nobles and at the time before the holocaust Shtetls painted eastern europe. To continue this thought, i find it peculiar they decided to dress the vampires like Circassians or some other Caucasian group in the anime and while i adore this style of clothing this, alongside the perpetrators of the murder of her family being Zirnitrian troops, led me to believe that the comparison was being made to Chechens or Kalmyks initially; groups who were deported and murdered during ww2 by the soviet government for their supposed "collaberation" with the nazis, but i digress.

The fact the anime used fake cryllic confuses me given the source material not shying away from it. Maybe it was an attempt to further disassociate zirnitria from reality? same thing with the redesign of the cross. Speaking of which, the bigger focus on religion was a surprise to me. The anime heavily shys away from it, but the light novel had no issue explicitly blaming the church for the vampire's oppression and explicitly makes the vice-director into a devoutly religious man.
