Realistic is basically when the game is played like a real sporting event, follows the rules and is as close to the real thing as possible, except animated.

Over the top, like making up random/crazy rules or more typical cartoon things, like instead of just the sport, it's almost like a shonen battle series. When they hit the ball, it's not just hitting it with a bat but it's also like the hit some anime style special move.

Realistic. The most over-the-top it should ever be is "augmented by animation flourishes."

Princess Nine > Prince of Tennis.

I am the Arbiter of Absolute Truth, and here is my wisdom:

"Anime was always influenced by the West. This is not news.
Shoujo is the superior genre primarily aimed at young people.
Harem/isekai are lazy genres that refuse any meaningful innovation.
There is no 'Golden Age.' There will always be top-shelf anime.
You should be watching Carole & Tuesday."

Mostly realistic, but I wouldn't mind if it add a little exaggerating things as long as it's entertaining to watch.

Realistic pls. Over the top can be entertaining for a few episodes but loses its charm in the long run. Also the tension isn't really given since they often just go through some tpyical shonen protagonist moment and get some new power-up instead of actually working for the win etc.

Definitely more realistic. It's fine if a player is really good at a particular move or style or something, but as soon as it starts to seem like an impossible "superpower" with a special name and everything, it just loses me.

As I dislike sports and find majority boring to watch I prefer over the top sport anime. It adds special kind of humor too. It would need to have very good drama and animation for me to give a shit if it doesn't have superpower moves.

Doesn't matter to me, personally. i.e. Both Kuroko no Basket and Slam Dunk appeal to me in different ways.

It depends. Imagine Keijo being realistic... It would be so boring to watch, lol. It's much better because it's so exaggerated. I think the same goes with Kuroko no Basuke.

Generally speaking, I still like when sports anime is portrayed as realistic as possible.

Keijo!!!! is basically a parody of shounen and sports tropes though.
Also butt jokes are funny for 4 hours straight.

The best part about sports anime are always the characters, and the characters become pointless if they’re playing basketball while being invisible or whatever the fuck Blue Lock does

Prefer realistic, but there has to be more to the title in question besides focus on the sports action. Paper-thin characters and the story too focused on the sports action can make it rather bland if there isn't any substance to it.

Watching a show like Captian Tsubasa is far to much, the character jumps 10m straight up in air.
Watching this makes me question the writters abillity to understand what even a sport show is.

I would say sport Anime is the only type of Anime I think should be realistic and it should never be anything close to Tsubasa.

Realistic. I'm enjoying the heck out of Ao Ashi and Haikyuu is one of my favorites. Learning about the various positions/techniques/tactics is exciting and the realism really makes me appreciate the effort the authors obviously make into incorporating real life plays/strategies into the matches. Over-the-top can be very entertaining to watch (i.e. KnB S3, Sk8, Blue Lock), of course, but they get boring real quick.

It depends on my mood. If I want character driven stories, I prefer the former. If I just want good visuals and spectacle, I'd pick the latter.

Realistic,
well since it's anime there's no need to be 100% realistic down to the little details, just no ridiculously exaggeration :)

A mix of both but I want it to be grounded in some form of realism. For example, I didn't enjoy Kuroko no basket because it isn't grounded in any form of reality. Literally, everyone has superpowers. Now, something like Diamond no Ace or Ao Ashi is perfect because it introduces you to their respective sports and eventually puts its own spin to keep the audience interested.

Realistic as in the game realistic. The characters and story outside of the game can be as fictional as ever. Obviously no anime sports game is gonna be even at least 80% close to reality because I could just see that on tv and on tv And it’s not as interesting without the slow mos and our ability to use telepathy into the characters mind. But I need it to be non out of this world realistic. I cannot stand when sports anime have some type of fantastical powers it’s why I can’t even touch Korokos basket. I don’t find these shows bad because of it I just don’t like it at all idk.

There is simply no way anyone who isn't particularly a fan of the sport an anime is about can genuinely enjoy it if said anime chooses a realistic approach. It's nearly impossible.

Over the top all the way, because that way it has more chances to be enjoyed by more people and a broader appeal.

For me I find the more that I know about and like a sport the more I tend to dislike anime about it, because of usually how absurd they make the actual playing of the sport. That just frustrates or annoys me. So if it's a sport I'm into I prefer a more realistic approach I guess. The less I actually know about the sport or how it's played, I tend to enjoy the over the top or crazy stuff or how they might bend the actual rules.

Both are really fun in their own way. What I don't like is when its half-assed. Either put in the effort to make it REALLY realistic or ENTIRELY over the top. Nothing is more disappointing than when they try to have both and just fail at both.

I don't mind if there is some exaggeration to showcase how dominant some characters can be like Goro from Major, he is basically reminiscent of Shohei Ohtani before Shohei Ohtani was Shohei Ohtani (although he is better than Goro now) and dominates by himself in Japan when he played, but there's no superpowers involved. He just practiced so damn hard at baseball since he was pretty much an infant and was insanely talented. Something really annoys me though about superpowers or abilities that go way over the top beyond reality that make it a turnoff for me to watch.

It's why I hated Kuroko no Basket a lot with the Emperor's Eye or Midorima's 3% shooting from halfcourt being invincible pretty much or whatever. Even rewatching Captain Tsubasa now and seeing guys jumping up the goalposts to do overhead kicks or shots that are repeated over and over again with custom names like they are finishers from WWE makes matches more painful and less interesting to watch that way. It gives off the opposite feeling of excitement for me by trying to be over-the-top and epic.

I would rather watch something like Baby Steps where Maruo's major strength to help boost his talents is his analysis and eye while working hard every single day for months to get better with his tennis foundations without needing superpowers, than something like Prince of Tennis.

without fantasy twist, sports would be 1 of my least liked/hated genres.

Kuroko no Basket and Hajime No Ippo are 2 sports Anime I found most enjoyable.

I don't mind sports anime being over-the-top (such as is the case with "Kuroko no Basket"), but sports anime that are more realistic tend to be the ones I like the most. Not that I actively like them because they are more realistic, but they happen to be very good sports series that are also realistic.

I can simply watch the original sport if I want it to be completely real.

Though I can't say for sure since I haven't watched many sports anime to begin with.

I'll say a mix, because I'm not sure if I've actually seen a realistic sports anime. It's also weird you used games as an example instead of anime.

Oh, and to anyone who answered realistic, feel free to give me some examples.

I don't mind some exaggeration, but if a show like this doesn't take itself seriously, then it's hard for me to do the same. I still like Shokugeki no Souma, but I can't take battle shonen cooking battles seriously. However, the authors did not plan this.

I'd prefer a more realistic approach, maybe a little bit of exaggeration is not a problem. But if there are comedy elements, they can do whatever they want lol.

Personally, I think the more important thing is the characters and story. They can elevate any sports scene for me. There's another plus if they also nail the animation and soundtracks.
