I saw a similar post asking "Do you like Light Yagami?" and it got me thinking about who people prefer/like more, Light or L?
So... Who do you think is smarter? More liked? Overall the better character? etc...

I like Light more he is just more interesting. I think that’s both of them are equals when it comes to intelligence though. Also Lights is simply a more complex character both in his morality and his overall personality.

I'm more of an L fan, however, I love light more than most protagonists. He's one of the more well-written protagonists and I truly believe that he's becoming underrated recently. Still, more of an L fan.

There's absolutely no room for doubt that L is more intelligent and resourceful in the hunt for Kira, as L slowly encases Light and leaves him so little room to breathe. Light obviously does win with the help of two death gods and Misa, but L had a far greater fundamental understanding of the cat and mouse game and its elements. Light is a fascinating character but his ideology is very faulty.

I think they are pretty equal for me though if I had to choose I'd probably say L. That's one of the things that makes Death Note as loved as it is though. Light and L are such well written characters and their dynamic is one of the best in anime. It truly feels that either one of them could end up winning which always keeps people on the edge of their seat. There's a reason why both characters are in the top 10 for most favorites on MAL.

I definitely was and still am team Light, L was quirky and interesting sure but it was fun to root for a protag who didn't give a shit and played super dirty

You're completely right, Light did win against L but the battle wasn't a great measurement of pure intelligence as the resources were greatly skewed in favor of Light from the beginning. I'm under the impression that Near didn't win because of plot convenience but because Mikami and Light had poor mobility with their communication. I still respect your reasoning very much though <3

Tbh I like L more. Not only he had less powers (like literally gods and a book that could kill anyone Light wants) but with his Intelligence he was able to know who kira was, right at the beggining. I also liked his personality and way of doing things

So thats it L is better

I think they're on a similar level if it's about intelligence but Light was more shrewd and that's why I love him more. He was more interesting IMO

i like L more cause he has that mystery around him and always wants to be hidden,i like that about a character, both of them are very similar in levels of intelligence, although Light has a much more complex thing he is doing and him keeping up with L who only has to catch him, makes Light more impressive

Actually , L is my fav character in Death note. But I agree that the character of Light is more complex than L's. Despite this , their level of intelligence is not equal. Cause Light sometimes acted with passion while L only used his intelligence. So that makes Light less powerful than L , even though he defeated L. As we already know , Light was able to defeat L with the help of Misa , Ryuk and Rem. Without one of them , Light wouldn't be able to do a thing.

I think L is smarter then Light. He just didn't have luck. I love L more but Light is also pretty good character.

I think Light is smarter because, in general, it's harder to keep up a lie while under such extreme scrutiny, than to disprove the lie. I also think Light is a better developed character, but I like L more because he's not a murder crazed psychopath, killing to escape boredom. L is just a chill dude(especially compared to Light).

i absolutely love light and his determination to achieve his goal no matter how low he has to stoop or how horrendous deeds he has to do. whenever he's cornered he comes up with something outrageous that makes me laugh in fascination on how far he's willing to go. that's why i love him.

There's been so many topics about this throughout the history of MAL lol. I pick L over Light because I do think he's the smarter one of the two, which one of the creators did actually mention as being their head-canon. Also Light only won because he had so many things in his favor, such as fake rules in the Death Note and supernatural help from two shinigami overall.

I like light more because he is more enjoyable to watch and extremely well written. But l is also very unique and well written as well but I just enjoy light more. L is by far smarter than light because light had a lot of resources but l was able to figure out everything starting from nothing.
