Why are they talking about being a defender like some sort of curse or punishment?

I was a centre back for the best part of a decade and it’s a lot of fun being the last line of defence (besides keeper of course). When the other team has managed to penetrate your entire team and it’s up to you and a couple others to adapt on the fly and pressure them into an unfavourable position or you’re the last man stopping a final push for the goal that would have given them the equaliser. It’s just as intense and just as vital of a role.

I ended up playing centre mid for a couple years and my last few months of football I played a little centre forward and it was a lot of fun too so I can get that but it’s not like defence is bad. Plus if you’ve spent so long cooped up on one part of the pitch it’s unbelievably refreshing to play somewhere new and develop new skills. It’s like playing an entirely different game.

I was nervous and a little confused when my manager told me to play centre mid after only every playing centre back but I’m so glad I got that opportunity. This show just seems a little over dramatic sometimes and I enjoy it for the most part but sometimes it’s a bit irritating or cringe inducing.

Cm to cb is different from St to LB because even as a CM you have defensive duties but changing from a ST to a LB is a massive change and he has to learn how to defend

Edit: Sorry didn’t see u said u played CF but Ashito only thinks about scoring so think about it from his POV

Edit 2: I just reread ur post and realised my comment makes no sense. To summarise ashito has only played striker and hasn’t played anywhere near defence or even thought about it, so it would come to a shock to him that he is being moved to defence.

Yeah I agree it is a bigger difference than anything I did and obviously Ashito only ever focused on scoring so he has a different mindset than I ever had playing football in the first place.

But I still think the shows being a bit over dramatic. Like with Fukuda having a private meeting and being all spooky and dramatic and Ashito grabbing the manager by the shoulders and screaming (although he only ever screams) and him being distraught as though his life is over.

I see your point but this is anime and this isn’t the first time it’s happened either.

My favorite position was CDM, and second favorite was RB.
I can have a great orgasm after a successful 40m pass up the pitch.

Because he dreamed of being the best forward in the world and now the only person to believe in him throughout the whole show is trampling on that dream.

I mean, he's a dumb and simple kid who just was fascinated with scoring.

I don't read the manga, but I assume this next arc is gonna be about him discovering how football has a lot of process put into motion in order to make a play work. This storytelling follows an obvious path through football fundamentals and philosophies, so I guess the author wanted to use this position shift as a device to expand his exposition of the game. Moreover, Fukuda says something that really is true: the further you are from the goal, the more you see the field. It's constantly showed that Ashito has an incredible natural talent to understand the flow of the game, so I feel this is gonna be about him getting passionated with the concept of play building rather than play finishing. I bet, eventually, he'll move forward to a midfielder, where he might be set for good onwards.

Anyways, I love this kind of realistic take on how football skills might bring positional rearrangements. This is a real thing, since almost every kid dreams about being an attacker or midfielder, some as a goalkeeper, but very few as a defender. Many professional centerbacks were, at some point, midfielders or attackers. Van Dijk, for example, became pro as a striker. Thomas Muller and Gareth Bale were promoted as a Right Back and Left Back respectively. There are plenty of examples of position shifts. I really appreciated this is a point of study in this story.

No, your way of thinking actually in line with this show. The MC is still a kid, so it's understandable that he is shocked when the coach told him to be a defender. But you will see later he will grow into a more mature person and of course enjoy defending.
Also people should emphasize that he is turned into a fullback, not a pure defender. He still needs to learn how to defend, but it's mostly the defensive iq (decision making) that is more important than the defending itself like tackle, duel, block, etc. And for Aoi case, it's not just a mere fullback, but
, which is the most demanding and important role now in modern football.
“You should enjoy the little detours to the fullest. Because that's where you'll find the things more important than what you want.”

True man like didn’t he agree to move to A team if he became defender, plus Ashito must know Fukuda knows what he’s doing but to raise up the tension, but man it pisses me off when Ashito just screams most of the time and full of himself bruh

same with its just that i was a forward and i played centre back defense and man it was fun when you score goal all the way feon the back in a futsal match . in my official matches i played forward or wing but playing different position really broadens your perspective on the game would reccommend anyone who is playing football.

every position pn the field is worth playing you just need to have the right mindset

It's passion related. You should check out Reece James interview. He said he was played as forward for years, then in academy they moved him to Mid then finally to Back. And he said that he hated the decision for 2 years. If real pro player can be salty for 2 years, I don't think the show is overdramatic, especially after Ashito just take
to move on from it.

Also, Ashito represent kids and general audience knowledge, not a football expert. I've seen several comments about ppl dropping the series because they don't like defenders. Defensive player are under appreciated by general and that's a fact. I'm pretty sure 90% of kids playing football wanting to be a striker. That's just how it is, ppl think Forward>>>Defense. That's why I think it's great that the show want to explore the under appreciated area.

Because he is an immature kid with inflated ego when it comes to football, he thinks scoring is the only worthwhile and important thing in football and put him in a position as far way from scoring and spotlight is like punishment to him, like he has been demoted and insulted. At that age all (immature) kids imagine they are next Ronaldo or Pele, so it's natural reaction for a type of guy Ashito is at that age. I did sports as a teen and personally witnessed guys going ballistic, getting all angry and throwing a tantrum for less and more pettier shit than Ashito is right now.

If you know kids, they dream to be the new Messi and Ronaldo, but not the next Iniesta or the next Van Dijk
Football in general media is represented by people scoring, people who don't know anything about football will always blame forwards if the team doesn't score
Especially for Ashito, the change from attacker to defender means he can't do the things he always wanted to do (scoring), but i guess this is part of the development, understading other roles and appreciate them

My role as a CDM, i wouldn't give to anyone but i respect fullbacks, external defender and midfielders, pure midfielders and creative ones, forwards and goalkeepers. He has to understand how they work, so that you know what to do

Maybe switching to a full-back will stop his screaming. Well, less chance of scoring and more on team contribution and being a playmaker.

Everyone just plays for fun. You can't use yourself as a reference to him.
He has a real dream and has to pro, or his life is ended.

Come from me as the highest tier Dota ranking player (not pro).
I know I just can play best as a supporter, but I always want to be the best carry.
There is no way I enjoy to play as a supporter since I always played as carry in my life.
