The one thing this anime is doing a great job at is slowly building up Aoi instead of just going through his progress quickly. Realistically it takes time to learn a new skill or tactic and Aoi finally understanding this strategy after a while is worth the build up.

I'm learning a lot, like A LOT in this anime. Football is such a great sports and Ao Ashi is making me love it more. Ashito is starting to make a character development which is so satisfying to witness. "Trust the process." Yup. Intense episode 10/10.

Whatever the strategy of the team, the passing triangle (or sometimes diamond) is a tried and tested method to break opposition defenses. Good thing that Ashito (and the audience) is learning more on how football is being played. Expect that there'll be more of these new stuff and tactical concepts like this to be presented in the future matches.

Speaking as someone who doesn't know anything about sports they're not teaching it very well. They kept saying line, and I've got no idea what that is. They did say they're all on the left side a bit before, so I guess that?

The football tiers in Japan

Professional leagues:
• J-League 1
• J-League 2
• J-League 3

Semi-professional league:
• Japan football league (JFL)

Amature leagues:
• Regional leagues
• Prefectural league

Now this structure above is for the senior football.

*Exclusively* for the youth right between the regional league and prefecture league there are further leagues in the following order of level:-

1. Prince Takamado Football premier league
2. Prince Takamado Football prince league

Ao's Youth team B i.e. Espersion youth B plays in the prince league.
Since these are "youth" leagues they have an age cap of 18 years i.e. U-18.

Now there is further division, but we will focus on the Prince league.

Prince league is further divided into 9 other regional leagues from Hokkaido to Kyushu, our team is in Kanto region.

(How I know this all? I have watched like some games of the J-League in real life so that said it's clear I don't really follow Japanese football. But as a football fan for over 24 years i did research on the structure of Japanese football when Man Utd and Arsenal ruled the premier league becz Wenger came from J league and changed how English football operated at that time . I was just curious like chi-chan..

Now in the episode, it was just a matter of realisation for Ao to connect with Asari and Kurona.

There is a fine line b/w knowing and not knowing. Fine margins, football is a game of fine margins
What is obvious to oneself can be completely obscure to other.

Just like this episode, It seems kinda obviously to must of us, even Otomo said that they are formation a line but for Ao who played previously with a selfish approach with no tactics and no player to player interactions, it was a literal discovery.

A footballing term was used in this episode at 12:22 overlapping

Overlapping generally done by wide midfielder and fullbacks.
It is when a player is making a run beyond the teammate (winger) in front of them *along/near the touch line*.
At 21:26 Asari overlapped Ao who was holding the defender and as a result Asari got space to run into.

(There is also Underlapping in which a player generally a midfielder or fullback makes a run beyond the teammate (winger) in front of them *away from the touchline*.)

Kinda tough to understand them from text I suggest watch some YouTube clips becz that's the best way to understand it.

There types of movements are used to stretch the opposing defence and created space.
At 18:20 Ao got space to run into as Asari was occupying defenders becz he overlapped.

18:20 and 21:26 are examples how wingers and fullbacks link and co-exist in football....which is sadly is nowhere to be seen at my club penchester..

Good episode. I like the explanation of triangulation, quite accurate and simple to understand. Quite didactic.
Asari seems to me a character with a lot of potential, we will have to see how it develops.

Oh yea, i like how the photographer girl seems uninteresting at first to the match but gets excited and suddenly know everything after the second thought, showed how indeed nice episode this was xd. Then don't forget about Hana that also come in to support Aoi even after what happens before, and he couldn't even said sorry there xd. The way Aoi solved the assignment was truly an excitement. He wasn't think about making just a goal anymore, as a pride of a forwarder. Its about building up chemistry to the surrounding first, and moving the ball pass forward the goalie for the surrounding, not just for himself. Kuroda getting more cooler, with how he express the eye-contact, and Asari finally had a fine deal with Aoi. Hoo-boy, i can't wait for the next sunday already!

correction, the B team is in one tier below the prince league. I don't know if this competition matches reality, but they explained it in the manga (should've been in episode 10 but it got skipped).

You know something good will happen once Ashito has that "unique" look in his eyes. And speaking of eyes, Kuroda opened his eyes!!! Hahahhaha. I am not sure if he did in the past episodes but this is the first time I saw him opened his eyes.

But anyway, that was fulfilling to watch after Ashito's struggles before. It's a painful process for him but what's important is the end result. And it is also a painful process for me to watch this every week! Each episode feels so short... I can't wait to see how will Ashito further develop as a player. Maybe I should read the manga instead.....

They played 4-3-3
Aoi: left winger
Kuroda: left Midfielder
Asari: left back
Basically these 3 form a vertical line on the left flank.

That's it, as simple as that

Another advantage of the manga. In the anime we only see the formation on the blackboard before the opening so you really have to pay attention. With the manga you can also read on your own pace to digest all the information.
It's not weird at all for a football/soccer newbie + anime only to feel a little lost.

Ngl I didnt notice the CF even exist in the anime, never seen him talk. Also the RW looks younger here in the manga.

Coach Date didn't have to do the assistant coach like that though lmao. But he's goated for giving Aoi, Asari and Kuroda a chance.

Definitely a slam dunk reference at the end there.

I'm so happy that the three of them finally clicked, and that Ashito now understands what was wrong with his way to play.
Although the first goal (Asari's) might've been a "fluke" since Ashito passed him the ball without knowing why he did it, Kanpei's goal was completely intentional. The plan was to pass him the ball so he could score.
Ashito has finally learned to stop being so persistent about being the player to score a goal, and instead focus more on his teammates.

What a great episode.

Best episode so far.

It was nice to see things click for Aoi with Kuroda and Asari. His revelation was pretty obvious, but it was interesting to see him get there on his own. Understanding where his teammates want him to be is something he has done subconsciously with his Eagle Eye ability. Now he’s just learning how to replicate it at will.

The animation still isn’t great though.

Okay, so it was them all being on the left. Thanks for explaining. Do agree this is hard to capture in anime. I certainly didn't notice the blackboard positions and had little concept of the specifics before now. It seems much harder to convey than, as a surely random example, volleyball where you can see everyone at a glance.

As a Hungarian, it was heartwarming to hear the reference to Ferenc Puskás. After Spy x Family, Hungary gets some more spotlight. XD
This one is really special, since IRL Hungary just defeated England to a shocking 0:4 in Nations League - this kind of success did not happen for decades.

Anyway, I enjoyed this series so far a lot, but this is a special cherry on top for me. :)

They weren't really having any sort of teamwork in the first half. It was just a messy, chaotic and out-of-sync play.

Props to Aoi for de-escalating the situation in the locker room. Togashi was trying to fan the flames for a while there since he has some kind of rivalry against the promoted players.

Aoi finally understood what he was doing wrong. Coach Nozomi clearly observed this and went ahead to stop the other coach from switching Aoi and Asari out.

Finally, it looks like Aoi and Asari are working together with the same mindset while Kuroda is supporting them.

It was a fucking great episode! So glad to see Aoi's development from a guy who only thought about being the one to score, to a guy who makes decisions and plays with his teammates!

But will they be able to tie up the score in the remaining 5-15 mins?

Hyped for the next episode!!

Yes! Glorious character development and conflict resolution! What a satisfying high five. It's truly crazy how good a team with good chemistry is. Team work makes the dream work as they say. Didn't that girl compare Fukuda to Jose Mourinho? Well it turns out Jose is actually teaching that high school soccer team given the classic Chelsea park the Bus technique.

I get Aoi isn't good with emotions but hopefully Hana gets her apology soon. I know I keep saying this but she's a real G for showing up after their fight.

Pretty cool. Idk shit about soccer but this basically felt like Aoi learned what it meant to play in a line. Like before he knew he was in a line, but didn't know what that actually meant and/or how you would typically work with your line. Would be nice if the series did like a cut away to a birds eye view of the field to explain certain tactics kinda like Haikyuu did many times to show positions and rotations and such.
