Have you ever dreamt about one of your stories being adapted into manga?
Thought of the perfect plot, but weren't sure how to get published?

The MyAnimeList x Honeyfeed Writing Contest is back to help you realize that dream! Three contest winners will have their stories reviewed by a professional and may get the chance to debut with their very own manga—published by Kodansha in Japan.

Changes since 2021's Writing Contest:
  • The minimum and maximum word count have been significantly reduced.
  • Complete stories are requested this time, rather than asking writers to focus on works which are open-ended/open for expansion.
  • Five prompt categories have been reduced to three (3) and each will have a first place winner.
  • Required genres/themes for prompt categories were removed, and instead we have mood boards to represent the types of stories we are looking for.
  • Novels written before the contest can be entered under specific conditions (please see the contest page for more info).
  • We're looking for passionate readers who would like to join the judging process to determine the finalists!
  • Winners will be decided by a combination of Public Vote & Jury. Applications to be part of the Jury will open later.
  • First prize of each category (School Life, Rom-Com, Cyberpunk) will receive $3,000 USD each.

So what are you waiting for? It's time to get writing!

Submissions Opens June 1

Judges Applications Opens July 1

Can the Cyberpunk prompt board include a story with survival, horror, psychological & thriller elements? The keywords would suggest otherwise but I just wanted to confirm.
You're not limited to only those keywords, so should be fine~

Can I write a romcom based on the "school" theme? It's very hard, if not impossible, to write a contemporary teen romance plot without the school element.

I may or may not be entering this time. Prompts don't exactly align with my personal interests as a writer, but I might be able to come up with something

I wish everyone who's participating the best of luck!
I'm sure we'll get lots of interesting stories to read again this year, like last year's Questionable Days with Yokai, Tales of Virtual Shopkeeper and A Kat's (GOD AWFUL!!!) Blessing, for example

Did any of last year's even get adapted? Last I recall they sunk without trace.

The idea of jury is somewhat interesting though. Providing the requirements for being a part of it are actually reliable, which is hardly something I expect.

EDIT - "Have Discord and Google Drive." Well that's certainly going to filter out the experts(!)

Last I heard (which was just yesterday), Honeyfeed is still working on it with Kodansha. I believe they said there was one in particular (no namedrop, though), that Kodansha was especially interested in? Although I could be misremembering or misinterpreting what they said

Source: many of the HF admins were online on the Discord yesterday to answer questions about the contest, and someone brought that up

The word count decrease depresses me. I had a cyberpunk story that I'm still writing (only have 3 chapters written lol) that would fit this challenge but now I need to scrap it all together since not even an "open ending" is accepted... the only change I like is the judges. I might apply for a judge panel if I got nothing to offer (which is likely to happen.)

I dont understand the word decrease, when looking at this yesterday I couldn't find any information on the official site where you submit as to a count as min / max words. (barring the final count)

Only thing I could discern is you have to release it in some kind of chapter format and do one per x period. I love a bit of story telling but the rules seem so convoluted its kinda putting me off.

Cyberpunk is one of my fav genres to boot!

If the focus of your story will be the romance aspect, then the setting, even if it's a school or a cyberpunk setting, should be a far second element and therefore your story should be entered under the romance category. Good luck if you're entering!

I also am wondering about the School setting. It's strange that, as you mentioned, the tags indicate drama, but Romance is a different category and we will be disqualified for writing something that crosses over between the 3 major categories.

I'm struggling to think of a compelling school drama that fits the suggested tags that doesn't have some kind of romance involved.

Okay, so for anyone who's a little confused and are not in the Honeyfeed discord, this is my understanding on some of them:

For example, if you want to write a rom-com in a cyberpunk world, DO NOT tick/checkmark cyberpunk! Your main focus is rom-com so cyberpunk in this case is just the setting- also as a DO NOT; if the main is rom-com but you add too much focus on the cyberpunk aspect, then that probably will lower your chances.

For the school life prompt, it's fine if there is some romance but DO NOT make it the main point. No one goes to school thinking they're in The Bachelor/Bachelorette, lol.

For the "English Only" rule, you can use honorifics like -san -kun, -chan, sensei, etc, or if a character shortly speaks in, let's say, French. It just means your WHOLE story cannot be written in another language.

Again, this is only from what I gathered, so I might be wrong on some parts (and my brain never works 100%, lol) and I'm not a mod or staff for MAL/HF. I'm just someone who's thinking about joining the contest~

And there is also this that I think will be helpful (I will just copy-paste it).

The information below is not an official rule. Rather, it serves as an explanation for what constitutes 'gore, heavy ecchi and soft porn.'

Gore: The principal factors to consider are level of detail and amount. On its own, no element of gore would be disallowed, as long as you understand the appropriate way of including it in a story. When writing gory scenes that would be risky, try your best to keep them 'out of shot'. You can do that by minimising the level of detail, or trying to divert the attention away from the gore as it happens.

Good example:

I opened the door to find layer upon layer of innards strewn on the tiles, mudding the carpet, hanging off the mirror and filling up the bath tub. I counted seventeen pieces of flesh in total. Seventeen of my beloved I'll never see whole again.

Bad example:
I opened the door to find layer upon layer of innards strewn on the tiles, mudding the carpet, hanging off the mirror and filling up the bath tub. The horrible, putrid stench assaulted my nostrils in ways that made my stomach churn out. I couldn't help puking, our fluids mixing together in one last horrid kiss on the floor. Half of her face swam in a sea of gore, her smile petrified, sullied, desecrated.

(too detailed, over the top, too long)

Heavy ecchi: The rule on soft ecchi is simple. Excessive use of soft ecchi is disallowed, whereas the odd (tasteful) panty shot or the 'softer' ecchi (peeping, imagining, accidental peeks, 'simping' in descriptions, etc.) is allowed with measure. Fetishism is frowned upon and should be refrained from for the most part. Obsessive behaviour, stalking or other unsettling 'romantic' behaviours could very easily constitute the disallowed soft ecchi.

Good example:

Kazuya's heart throbbed in his chest. He looked below at his friend's emboldening smiles and, somehow, he felt justified in his endeavour. But when he made it across the wall dividing the two hot spring pools... and peeked at the first bit of exposed porcelain skin...

His nose spat out blood, his knees wobbled and down came crashing the entire pubescent pyramid that hoped to glimpse heaven.

Bad example
Kazuya had trailed Ai all week. When she ran the mile, he was there, peeking at her bloomers. When she practised for the dance, he was there, roaming under the stage and hoping for the inevitable. When she climbed the stairs, he hung behind her just enough to see under her skirt's seam (and cursed that she wore it an inch OVER the limit).

His comeuppance came when he found her alone in the store room. Sneaking had become second nature to him and his catlike gait did little to inform Ai of his presence in the room. Unawares, she stretched on her tiptoes, hoping to reach the top shelf. And, in doing so, her skirt lifted just enough for a crouched Kazuya to slide on the ground, unlock his phone and take a perfect picture for his collection.

(excessive, obsessive voyeurism, illegal activity -- child pornography -- fetishism)

Soft porn: Soft porn is the graphic depiction of pornographic content in a non-explicit way. A lot of romance novels do this by means of using euphemisms for genitals, relying on sensations as opposed to actual motions/actions and, in general, beating around the bush as opposed to stating things outright.

To combat this, we ask that the pornographic material be implied rather than shown in any way.

Good example:

He led me towards the bedroom, a sure grip on my wrist and a giggle playing in his throat. We were both excited, more than we were scared of the implication of what crossing that threshold with our clothes off would do. It would be official, something serious, a note in the notebook of our love.

But it was one we'd both have a hand in writing.

Bad example:
His hands explored my body, from top to bottom, never shying away from allowing my deepest buried sensations to surface. It was a simple movement, routine, but everyone of them felt special: one time he cupped my waist, the other he held me in place, afraid he'd break me.

And when it stopped, it felt like fireworks, inside and out.

(while not explicit, it constitutes much more severe implications and goes through the motions of intercourse)

Will Demons, zombies or even fantasy elements qualify under cyberpunk? If not, I'm assuming these themes are here for a more creative genres? I'm fine with either results. I'll see if I can be flexible.

I also wanted to ask if we can just write romance instead of rom-com? Comedy ain't my forte.

EDIT: I also wanna know if it's not possible for cyberpunk than maybe Demons, zombies, fantasy as setting for rom-com?

I don't think rom-coms should necessarily have a fun plot- maybe like dark humor or something. But I'd say try to add as much as you think feels right.

Pretty sure you can add whatever elements you want in either of the themes, just as long as the focus is that chosen theme.

Unfortunately, I'm pretty sure it needs to be rom-com. Not separate.

Can i merge the images with the texts? for example a scene where the characters are talking in a room, after the description there would be a drawing of them talking
Example: The girl's friends are talking about how they are going to do the rescue mission through the shadows without the enemy noticing, some are worried since the enemy is more experienced than them and may already be preceding this rescue.

Just scrapping another idea then. I noticed the school and rom-com are all about wholesome, fluff, and positivity which is challenging me a bit since all my ideas seems to be dark. I'm assuming at least school bullying fits the theme? Although it's not mentioned anywhere in the keywords.

A lot of rom-com aren't comedic for me if I'm honest. They are usually fun and lighthearted moments but I don't want to mislead you into still writing a 'possible' wrong theme. I guess check if you tick any of the keywords.

You can't actually put images in your stories/chapters. There's no function for that on Honeyfeed (you can do it on Wattpad, though). But there is a gallery and a showcase feature- gallery is to upload your own illustrations and showcase is for fanart people made for your story.

I've heard that the keywords are some things Kodansha/judges are looking for, but you don't need to totally rely on them. Many of them said similar things like "a good story is a good story", so just go ahead and try it out. <3

Looking in their Discord server, seems like they did a test for that option but not a lot of users used it and it didn't really make a difference in reads and comments vs a normal novel.

This was in 2020: "We tried the insert between text images in our Light Novels, but it got so little reaction we decided not to include it as a public feature as for right now. However, if enough authors start to ask for it or a lot of users have their showcase slots filled, we will consider launching the feature, but for now only 2 or 3 people have asked for it and not many authors fill their galleries yet, so we feel it is not yet time to implement the feature as a public tool."

And this was in 2021: "Like you noticed, we tested this feature in our translated LN but it did not make any impact vs a regular novel; no comments, no reactions, no difference in reading time, so we decided not to include it as a user feature because it was not popular. If there is a lot of users asking for it to be added as an actual user feature, then we can look into making it available in the future. 😄"

We can only wait and hope...

I think I'll give this a try this year! I planned on writing a girls' love cyberpunk story, though. I know according to the rules that would mean, then, that I couldn't check off romance or comedy when uploading my story. But, does the same rule apply to the girls love/boys love categories? They're listed as separate categories, but it's all romance in the end. Good luck to everyone participating!
