Most likely.
Sports manga/anime rarely blow up here like in Japan. Even something that’s a relative success here, like Haikyuu, still isn’t doing much business.
Since they’re still being produced in the massive volumes that they are, there has to be a market for it somewhere, and it’s most likely the market the creators/producers actually give a shit about: Eastern Asia.

Yes! It's highly popular and loved in Japan. Ao ashi is about Japanese football afterall and it got a collaboration with J-league for years now. It also got 11 million copies in circulation without the anime back then and now that the anime is airing, I can see more people
reading it and saying it's really good. Also, we can see more boost in sales these past few weeks because of the anime, and i hope for the upcoming weeks too.

The reason why Ao Ashi is not that popular in Western is because it is not published/distributed in US and other countries yet so just a few people know about it. Let's hope for wider distribution for the manga in so that people can buy it more🙏 Overall, Ao Ashi is still a popular manga (because it's truly a masterpiece) and I'm so happy for it's success.

But is the anime doing well in Japan? Why does it seem like anime is being a little underrated/ignored in the west, in Japan too?

If you’re asking for the manga, it’s doing well for itself here in Japan. Including digital, Ao Ashi reportedly has over 10 million copies in circulation after all. But if you’re asking about the anime, it doing pretty well though don’t expect cosmic-level ratings.

To be clear, I think this is a good show, and it’s definitely the most exciting sports-based series coming out this season. However, the timing of Ao Ashi coming out in a sea full of heavyweights isn’t a conducive environment for it to get maximum attention.

Then you also have the Blue Lock - a highly anticipated sports title that is about football too (which to us Americans is called soccer) coming out later in the year. Once Blue Lock comes out, it could have a dovetail effect in that it could also make Ao Ashi even more popular than it is now since they talk about the same exact sport in very different ways.

With all that out of the way, it’s worth noting about how some people see that Blue Lock could be the popular successor to Haikyuu!! as its storyline is darker and very different to most sports series out there. Meanwhile, Ao Ashi is the series that more faithfully follows the ‘Haikyuu-esque’ tried-and-tested formula of teamwork, perseverance, friendship with a side of slice-of-slice drama.

(Personally, given how popular and shippable the large yet well-written ensemble of dorky Haikyuu boys are [which, let’s be real, further helps with their ubiquity], I don’t think Blue Lock would be overtaking it as “the” sports series. Rather, it would occupy the top spot for people looking for a great alternative to what’s usually expected in the sports genre.)

Trust me, the anime is doing very well in Japan specially the manga. And it's evident that it's starting to be doing well in west too by the sale boosts since the anime started. More and more people is reading it now☺️

The anime is still on early episodes but i can see that a lot of people enjoys it which is good. Also, don't get the wrong idea. Ao Ashi is highly popular. Have you seen the amount of views in the trailers? Of course people know about it but some of them refused to watch nor read it because they have their favorite and it hurts their ego to read ao ashi. Some people is not fan of sports animes/manga so they didn't watch or read it (totally understandable), and some people genuinely haven't heard of it yet. And also, there's a lot of good series this spring so the attention of viewers and readers is divided. But there's still plenty of time for them to watch it or read the manga after. So don't worry. Ao Ashi is doing great.

It's very popular in Japan and in West. It's just underappreciated by some people but it's widely known.

I understood. I researched and saw that this anime is being broadcast on a children's channel (NHK E) and so I was a little surprised and worried if it's not reaching the right audience, since the manga is classified as seinen

The good thing about Ao Ashi is it targets both adult and young audiences/readers despite being seinin because the main goal of the author is to inspire future football players for future generations. And having kids/people interested in football and wanting to be a player is the best result that the manga can do. It also actually has a copy, an easier to understand version of the manga for kids. It was put on seinin because it features the reality of life and football which is harsh, and difficult unlike what majority of shounen categorized series depicts. It's better to make them know how world of football works. And putting it in NHK will make it more accessible for kids because some parents prevents their kids from viewing other channels. Atleast us, adults can go there freely if we want to.
