The best chapter in the post-time skip! Luffy doesn't have the power of rubber but he himself is a rubber man, hmm... I thought Nika was someone who saved Slaves in void century or before that but Nika was a Model of Human Human Fruit. Elders are worried about Luffy being alive, and they should because he have the most freedom! This legitimately the game changing move from Oda and at the same time it could turn into a risky move because we need soo many explanation, but I BELIEVE IN GODA!!! |

This chapter was fucking insane, holy fucking shit! I guess that explains the previously addressed indagations of some characters regarding how Luffy's fruit doesn't work as a paramecia should. And considering what Who's Who said in 1018, the Gomu Gomu was INDEED the fruit listed under a fake name. This fight is crazy, is giving me the biggest Roger Rabbit villain vibes. Honestly, Luffy looks terrifyingly dangerous in this new form. And I guess the hito hito no mi mythical zoan theory from the beginning of last year turned out to be true, GG to that. Some 700 chapters ago foreshadowing for that Nika business gotta say (ever since Skypeia's epilogue party), this one was pretty nice. One of the best chapters of Wano, and there's some fierce competition lol 5/5 |

HOLY SHIT, Luffy has gone full Looney Tunes and Jim Carrey's The Mask and just man handled Kaido, can't wait to see some Haki infused attacks with Gear 5 / Awakening. Also im predicting Luffy's bounty will be in the 3 Billion or even the 4 Billion range after Wano is over, because Luffy looks like he's just busted now and the World Government wants him dead. Also BEST chapter out of any Manga this year so far too. Oh yeah, REALLY happy that One Piece finally beat Batman in sales. |

@Mei-o_Scarlett @Ayu_01 I didn't get spoiled on the chapter other than the title and Luffy's fruit real. Again I swear to god that I'm not spoiled on the chapter, other than Luffy's devil fruit & Title of the chapter. My 1st comment, literally is nothing but the title of the chapter itself. |

Imagine following One Piece for almost 20 years to see the day when the Gum Gum Fruit is revealed to be the Human Human Fruit. As much as part of me didn't want to see it come true, the reveals and lore drops have been ramping up as of late. And after seeing "Gear 5th" in action I'm actually on board with it. It's such a goofy ass ability tailor made for Luffy and this series. I live for wacky shit. Funny how this new ability pretty much brings many big theories and themes like Awakening, Gear 5th, Joy Boy, legendary Mythical Zoan model: Hito Hito no Mi model Nika and freedom together. Can't help but feel hyped and I need answers asap. It's cool that we basically got confirmation regarding inamimate Zoan users on our hands Lassoo, Funkfried and Smiley had a will of their own as we know. I think we also got a potenial explanation as to why Luffy looks like he does in Gear 4th and why Hyogoro took him for a guardian deity and as to why Gear 4th got so many variations. It's really neat how it adds up. I also want to see Luffy taking a Rumble Ball so badly. My gripe for this reveal is that the presented foreshadowing isn't all that seamless and a bit last minute. In particular the Nika introduction should've happened earlier. Getting major Kaguya flashbacks, lmao. The redeeming grace is that Oda brought up his favorite panels a while ago(those who know, know) There's still nothing that indicates he had this planned out since Skypiea. I'm saying that in all fairness and respect and not to discredit him as storyteller. He's only human and our mind changes over the years. Plus, he gotta keep things excited as a Jump mangaka. I'm sure there's a lot consider as to what ultimately affects the content. All things conaidered I'd say he made things fit surprisingly well. Game changer chapter, can't wait for the scans. Gonna elaborate on my thoughts later. Orochi The irony that Orochi's obsession, delusions and misbelief are responsible for sealing his own fate is delicious. Burning himself to death ans not being able to escape because of Kairouseki is finest poetic justice. Hot enough Orochi? This is the nuance and attention to detail I love to see. Hiyori also got to be badass. Her line remembered me of GoT. "The North remembers" type of shit. Wouldn't it be hype if Luffy ends up using that gigantic sword? @Mei-o_Scarlett nice Blackbeard could be a Zoan too take Sun vs Darkness |

Just read the Raws and all I can say is, "Amazing". That was so damn good. Luffy in his fifth Gear was looking kinda cool and goofy at the same time but that makes sense in a way as well. Loved Hiyori confronting Orochi like that and everyone's smile when they saw Luffy. Even, Kaido doesn't want to win like that. Hito Hito no Mi rocks... One thing I'm gonna say is I always had a theory back in my mind where Luffy's devil fruit was more special than the others and that's exactly what happened. But, at the same time, it was not something that I was very sure about... so, it doesn't matter. LOL. Loved this chapter. 10/10 Thank you, Oda-sensei. |

Idk how I feel about this tbh. It's really epic right now, but in the greater context of the story, I feel like this has the potential to be an asspull. But, I will cope and seeth until that moment comes, and put some faith in Oda, for writing the series consistently well so far. |

Extremely controversial decision by Oda to go for a unique Zoan fruit based on someone that has - by Oda's standards - barely been fareshadowed. Nika wasn't namedropped in Skypeia at all (and you could argue that a large part of the mythology applied to the giant snakes being revered as sun gods back then due to Aztec myths as a theming device) and both Who's Who randomly spouting conspiracies at Jimbei 30 chapters ago as well as this weird conversation by the Gorosei seem very hamfisted compared to Oda's usual style. I like the toon force style powerup as Gear 5/Awakening, but the same could be achieved by keeping it as the Gum Gum fruit and that's not even touching this whole can of worms it opens up regarding the WG's inactivity regarding the fruit, the entire determination vs determinism angle, the fact that apparently zoans house actual spirits of living beings now and that somehow Luffy is the only awakened Zoan in an arc that should be the primary Zoan showcase. I am extremely curious how Oda plans on resolving all of this, but this reveal feels very clumsy ... something I get from the entirety of Wano tbh. I hope that once the series is done we get some behind the scenes stuff on the frankly baffling focus shifts, weirdly sidelined subplots and other curiosities surrounding this arc. This is certainly the biggest chapter since Roger's arrival on Laugh Tale and the Referie ones, though. Maybe even the biggest chapter in the post-ts era. |

I'm sure there's a lot consider as to what ultimately affects the content. All things conaidered I'd say he made things fit surprisingly well. The big difference on why the Kaguya twist doesn't work and this does is that: 1- Kaguya was suddenly namedropped and all that some dozens of chapters before appearing, sure, but the circumstances were that at that one point in time Madara was basically unbeatable and she came forward as a beatable villain that would take his place instead. In here, it just changed the Rubber Fruit to the Rubber Man Fruit instead, giving Luffy a foreshadowed power up opportunity. 2- Kaguya's backstory entirely retcons lore behind chakra that had been up to that one point firmly established and developed up to that very arc (also creating several contrivances with previously stated information). In here, the one thing that would be affected is the fact his fruit isn't a paramecia. And for the longest time, there have been many good reasons to suspect his fruit was a "special paramecia?" of some sort because of how it didn't quite work like one. 3- Kaguya's new insertion into the lore basically inserted a reincarnation plot point for both Naruto and Sasuke that obliterated the themes and messages the story was going for since the chunin exam arc (and arguably from the start of the series, really), shafting the entire character arc for Neji in the process. In here, there's none of that, Luffy's fruit is all that changed. Zoans having a mind of their own is something we have been seen for hundreds and hundreds of chapters at this point, with inanimated objects that had Zoan fruit powers inserted in them having a consciouness. Zoan fruits being the only type Vegapunk was ever able to infuse, likely because of them having a mind of their own, as the Elders put in this chapter. I do understand that people are used to Oda's foreshadowing with names-dropping in particular happening hundreds of chapters before, but the fact of this happening just a year ago some 30 chapters past doesn't make it any less of a foreshadowed development. Hey, long time no see you in One Piece discussions. What I meant with the foreshadowing in Skypeia is just about that panel in 1018 being a callback to a much earlier panel of Luffy. Which was put in there as a hint to be compared and theorized with before the reveal we just got, in the beginning of last year. That one especifically doesn't necessarily need to have been planned since around that time, though. If anything, Skypeia was supposed to be the near the end of the story at one point, I would be most positive it wasn't. |

For clarification sake, I don't think that this twist is as poorly implemented as the Kaguya one. It didn't ruin anything...yet xD But you got to admit that it's hilarious how similar the vibes are. Legendary lore that's dropped 20-30 chapters before the reveal, lol. Let's laugh about the little joke together. I'm definitely with you for most parts and even said myself that Oda made it fit surprisingly well. I mean he tied up a lot of things I mentioned in one fell swoop and in a fashion that suits One Piece and Luffy. The most freestyle power for the pirate who wants to be the freest on the sea. It's a double edged sword, tho. We'll see what comes around. Anyways, my gripe is that the execution could've been a whole lot more convincing, especially for such a major twist. Something of this magnitude should've been ideally planned since the very beginning, but as I said, One Piece is running for 25 years and Oda is a human before a storyteller. Of course he can follow new inspirations and change his mind. As you can take from my post we're also agreeing on the Zoan part. This is something that can't be considered retcon. I didn't want to nitpick anything, but where I have to disagree is the Paramecia paragraph. Even a "normal" Paramecia can alter the users body permanenly without then having to activate the power. The Sube Sube no Mi comes to mind, Alvida is smooth 24/7. All kind of supernatural abilities and what not were withinh the capabilities of a Paramecia in fact. |

Bye bye to all the arguments on the matter if Oda would fuck up making Luffy a chosen one or worse, a reincarnation. Kaido was like "WUUUUUUUUUUT" when he was getting whooped. But at the end his battle spirit seems completely reborn and taken to another level probably never experienced before, not even when he fought Oden. Now his wish will come true, Luffy might not kill him, but that doesn't even matter. He WILL go down in history as the one that faced Joyboy after 800 years since his disappearence, that's a badge worth more than a thousand life times and all the riches in the world to him. GODPIECE and GODA have done it again. HAPPY 1044 CHAPTERS TO ALL OF YOU!!! |

@FMmatron No biggies there, I totally get your point that it's definitely not the way Oda usually does his exposition, and was just reinforcing your statements in that listing overall, tbh haha We are about in the same page here, as per usual really lol But on the disagreement side, Luffy's paramecia being much closer to the transformative nature of Zoans with his use of creativity for powering it up has always been a contentious point in discussions for a while, and since last year, a part of a discussion regarding what could the fruit really be after all (plenty of theories, one of which hits the nail with it being a Mythical Zoan Hito Hito no Mi that may have rubber properties... though the theory on itself was associating it to Hanuman and not Nika iirc). When it comes to special paramecias, as far as examples go in canon, they have Logia-like properties normal paramecia do not instead (Katakuri), which Luffy's never had really (I think?), and even those as far as I'm concerned ever were displayed like the Gears are used. As for transformative Zoan properties coming from their own substantial body, it has quite a contrast to how other non-awakened Paramecia users had so far (during the entirety of OP, Luffy never awakened his fruit, so environmental transformative powers with their properties like Doflamingo's, Kidd's, Law's or Katakuri's never took place to firmly establish it as paramecia, it was always more similar to Zoan's progression (Awakened Zoans would also explain his quick recover after the beatdown he just suffered), as to say, Chopper's transformations with the Hito-Hito no Mi, much like Luffy's Gears, which were surprisingly similar to how Gear 4 turned out to be. Anyway, all just food for thought tbh, Luffy's paramecia being always displayed in quite a differently progressive way than any other non-awakened user is my point haha Much like Chopper's Hito-Hito transformations and unlike other paramecia's modifications (awakened or not) as far as I'm concerned by power usages so far, it was also the only one that had damaging effects on the user, do refresh my mind if I'm incorrect. Because of that, I'm inclined to disagree on them being within what one would expect a Paramecia to be like, and it really was a point I never had too many arguments on when confronted with it, personally. I think Gomu Gomu always has been the least paramecia-like paramecia in the series, as far as we seen of other users (Robin for one also gets very creative with her fruit and the way her abilities go are not quite progressively developed the same). -------------------------------------------------------- But disregarding all that, as the real issue would be Luffy's fruit not working as a Zoan instead (which it does, since it basically just changed to him becoming like a rubber man, just not directly rubber itself), even if I were to be very wrong about the aforementioned, I think there would still be no issue. Like, depending on how this goes, even in terms of early exposition leading to this... THEORY TIME!!: 1- For all we know, MADS was trying to create an artificial Zoan fruit out of Luffy's, which would be why eventually they were called SMILEs because of the side effect that make people laugh uncontrollably like Luffy right now maybe. That would make this reveal have evidentially been foreshadowed and planned for at least 400 chapters (Punk Hazard), even if the namedrop was only 30 chapters ago, which would make for what one would expect of Oda's planning and further proof this reveal definitely didn't come just from Wano, but from the very start of this behemoth of a Saga. 2- Considering for how long this entire plot thread with Vegapunk has been going for, while we don't know why Kaido's cloning was a failure to him that made him leave the team, that would be consistent with WG's obsession with obtaining the fruit even if having to mess with lineage factor artificially, which would explain why we eventually got SAD and the SMILE fruits developed. The fact they are exclusively regarding Zoan types and not any other is more than enough of a hint that if Luffy's fruit was so important to the WG, it was likely to be revealed as a Zoan after 1018. 3- This could be a Zoan that works more like a Paramecia, much like Katakuri's is a Paramecia that works more like a Logia, given the context, if everything still checks out with Paramecia established overall characteristics and I'm wrong. Overall, all I'm saying is that there are more than enough past plot threads that could easily back this up as not being a sudden development never hinted at before, and I alone can think of a few haha I'm no one to criticize people's overview in the execution for now (since it's so different from his usual thing to do it all in a same arc), but if that turns out to be the case, I do think people won't have much to complain! |

Amazing chapter, worth the wait but still couldn't get enough of it. I don't know why some people find it bad development, are they even pay attention to this series from the beginning? Luffy is and will always be a warrior of liberation, even from the start of the manga, every encounter, every conflict, every arc, it's all about liberation and he's always the child of prophecy looking at his background from the beginning of the series up until now, yet some readers complained and call this chapter shit. |

So the Gum-Gum Fruit is actually a Human-Human mythical Zoan model Nika. GEAR FIFTH HYPE FINALLY. Oh brother the remainder of this fight is gonna be wild. This is some insane shit. |

Luffy is and will always be a warrior of liberation, even from the start of the manga, every encounter, every conflict, every arc, it's all about liberation and he's always the child of prophecy looking at his background from the beginning of the series up until now, yet some readers complained and call this chapter shit. I dont think he is a chosen one but I can say this development was expected from Marineford or even before. And it's easily the best chapter in post timeskip! |

I am laughing and smiling at the same time. What the hell?! This is fucking awesome I tell you. I am so freaking shocked and happy and happy again. That I am cussing hard. Oda fucking over did himself greatly. The moment this gets animated. I will swear on my life it will be one of the best anime episodes ever done on that Year and become the best. Dude. Freaking GEAR 5! GEAR 5?! Dude. What else. Did Luffy use the ground and made it rubber to bounce back Kaido's Bolo Breathe?! My fucking god! Not only that. Kaido god rag dolled by Luffy badly. Like wow man. Damn! Is Oda doing or was doing the reference of Luffy being Su Wukong like Goku is Su Wukong from Dragon ball? Like damn. Seriously Oda I think I want him to take a break after a couple more chapters. Like wow dude. At this time Luffy can hopefully match up to Akainu or even beat him senseless. I bet even Shanks would be proud to fight him at this moment! YEAH! |

This is absolutely bonkers, and I’m all here for it! The foreshadowing for this has been there for so many years and now we finally have the payoff. I understand why some are a bit unsure about the implications of this reveal, but all I can say is: In Goda we trust. |

What an incredible chapter man. Really feels like years of buildup was finally paid off in just this one stretch. Getting Nika, Luffy's awakening, and Gear fifth all at the same time doesn't even seem possible but Oda pulls through yet again. I've seen people complain about the goofiness a bit but if that isn't the most Luffy reaction to a powerup yet then I don't know what is. People will get used to it, just like they got used to gear fourth. Amazing stuff, can't wait to see what comes next. |

Legendary moment in one piece manga, but I have some issues with how Oda storyboarded and info dumped the reveal of gear fifth and true properties of the gomu gomu no mi. And poof, Luffy suddenly is the most broken person in one piece because he has the power of |

Chapter was very divisive in my opinion. While seeing Luffy wreck Kaido was amusing, the Hiyori scene took way too long and was totally unnecessary, especially the inclusion of Kanjuro's flame. Can he please just fucking die already?! Also seeing Luffy win against Kaido after getting a deus ex machina power-up is gonna feel really weird and off-putting once the arc is finally over, to me at least. I mean, all that time watching him train to use Advanced CoC in that horrible prison arc, and in the end it'll barely have any impact on the result of the battle. But as long as the fight ends in the next chapter or two, I guess it doesn't matter. |

I overall liked the chapter greatly but the future development cant be guaranteed .It will be a hit and miss from Oda nowonwards. He is introducing stuffs and playing with topics which is highly disapproved by the manga community be it any manga. Though I am patient to see what Oda plans but I hope he doesn't wait another 100 chapters for it and gives us hints frequently. Oda just give me Kaido awakening plsss. @Fmmatron @Volkur what are your thoughts on chapter |

Nidhoeggr said: Extremely controversial decision by Oda to go for a unique Zoan fruit based on someone that has - by Oda's standards - barely been fareshadowed. Even though Nika wasn't namedropped earlier, I believe introducing Joyboy way earlier in the series served as an adequate pre-cursor to the current events. Moreover, Luffy's durability and immediate recovery time can now partially be credited to his Zoan fruit abilities (since Zoan's are known to recover quicker and be more durable). *Moreover, ever since the start of the series, the fact that Shanks even had the Gomu Gomu no Mi was enough of a hint that it wasn't going to be a simple rubber fruit.* And I think credit shouldn't be taken away from Luffy for using it so innovatively. So, Luffy's fruit being special isn't even the most surprising thing or the biggest deal. BUT what I'm surprised about is why no one is mentioning the elephant in the room. The Gorosei mentions that Luffy's fruit is "The most ridiculous power in the world". I don't believe they mean it in the sense that the fruit is especially too powerful or anything. I believe they used this phrase to signify that it has a ridiculous ability to inspire others. So, the questions really begs: Throughout the series, Luffy was shown to be a magnetic and inspiring personality, the freest man alive. Was it all just Luffy or was it the devil fruit? |
