What I love about this chapter is that it parallels with the events back in chapter 10 from volume two.

(“Seto” is referred to his past self and “Kaiba” is referred to his current self)

(Sorry for the long post incoming lol)
.

.

.

•Chapter 10 is Atem and Kaiba’s first duel in the whole story. It was foreshadowing similar events of this current chapter.

-Kaiba is immersed with greed and power, similar to Priest Seto possessing evil from his father, Akenaden.

.

•Both Akenaden and Gozaboro each had evil tendencies to use their own son for gain. They both also had their fair share of being a nonexistent father in Kaiba/Seto’s life.

-Kaiba was adopted by a man with money who molded Kaiba to grow up as the next heir to a cooperation and use money and power to get his way. Then commits suicide to teach Kaiba a “lesson”, teaching him that losers should perish. Kaiba has to be the best duelist in the world. Seto has to become the pharaoh and take over the throne.
-Akenaden gave into the evil from Bakura and Zorc Necrophades and tries to persuade Seto to rule the world with him. Ironically, Kaiba wants to rule the world too.

.

•Seto and Kaiba share a hatred for Yugi(Atem). (However, Kaiba’s hatred stems from jealously and the events before his coma), whereas Seto was persuaded by Akenaden to essentially hate Atem and his position to the throne.)

.

•Kaiba’s obsession with the Blue Eyes White Dragon comes from Seto’s compassion for Kisara and her life force.

.

•In chapter 10, the Blue Eyes White Dragon does not attack Atem, just like in this chapter.

-Atem, in chapter 10, is playing a Shadow Game with Kaiba and uses his penalty game (it’s best to believe at this point that these “shadow games” was the power of Zorc Necrophades that was kept inside the millennium puzzle, which we just found out in this volume. This also can explain how Atem was evil enough to kill people in season 0 (volumes 1-7) ).
-Kisara uses the rest of her power to end the duel to free Seto from Akenaden. She expresses to Seto to not fall into the darkness/Blue Eyes ends the duel in Kaiba’s Shadow Game by attacking him, however, I think this is really the turning point where he “gives into the darkness” so to speak. I think Atem was just trying to teach Kaiba a lesson, but because of this attack, Kaiba is upset that it was used against him, similar to the idea that Akenaden wanted to take advantage of Kisara’s power too, disregarding Seto’s uncertainty. He does not want Kisara to be used for the wrong reasons. Kaiba on the other hand, ironically uses the Blue Eyes for power.

If you made it this far, thanks for reading!

I really loved analyzing Kaiba’s character development throughout the manga. The writing for him was really well done. As we can all see, Kaiba fell into “darkness” in the beginning of Yu-Gi-Oh! (which is opposite of what Kisara wanted for Seto.) In some ways history repeated itself, but unfortunately, Kaiba’s reborn into a life where he was mistreated and his mental health dictated his murderous tendencies to perish Yugi (Death-T). They needed to have their fated duel in Battle City in order to put everything to rest.
