Yatora managed to catch up to and/or surpasses seasoned art veteran students within the span of ONE year. It's not like it was always a hobby that he didn't take seriously or one of his relatives in his childhood introduced and used to do art with him. He went in with a blank slate from a family that has no history in art and got enrolled in one of the most prestigious art universities in Japan... with a YEAR of practice.

That's like playing basketball for the first time in your life and within the span of year becoming a top 50 draft pick. He is not some underdog he is an artistic GENIUS. How could the anime/manga realistically try to frame him as such? It's ridiculous.

Yatora didn't just practice art, he devoted his life to art. All his free time was spent drawing and observing. As an artist myself, and as a friend to many artists, I'm always shocked to see the improvement people can make if they simply draw for a little bit each day. Now compare that to our man Yatora. He was drawing for hours and hours, constantly studying his surroundings, and observing the art of his peers. That's a surefire way to get really good, really fast.

It's also noted in the show that Yatora is very smart. When it comes to art, you often have to use your head and be a good learner, so I'm sure that his intelligence had some influence on his quick development. I'm a fast learner myself, so from personal experience, it's not unreasonable for Yatora to learn so quickly.

Also, Yatora is certainly not better than his more experienced peers; however, he's full of potential, passion, and new ideas. That may be another reason why he was accepted into the university; yes, he was skilled, but he had the capacity to grow exponentially as an artist.

But finally, the most important point of all is this: it's just a show. It doesn't have to be 100% realistic. I, personally, think it's fairly realistic, but at the end of the day, it's simply entertainment. Just enjoy the ride.

Honestly I understand why it may seem like that, but seriously this man spent practically 24 hours out of his days (when he wasn't at school) drawing nonstop. Practice practice practice practice, that's literally how he improved so much. Most of us would do it for maybe 2-4 hours max, nowhere near the amount of time he spent. If anything, he is a "prodigy" at being able to put in effort and hardwork. Even other characters mentioned it to him, any normal person would not be able to put in so much time and effort without becoming bored or tired. The fact is, Yatora is impressive because he is able to work so hard nonstop. Most of us seriously wouldn't be able to do that :/

I agree. My peak drawing skills were at the period I was drawing daily and trying to improve. Nowadays, I've completely stopped, and while I maintain some of the knowledge, my skills are noticeably worse than before, almost like a soft reset.

People that are talented often don't feel like they should spend much time into improving themselves, because they know they could do it anytime if they really wanted to - as a result, they don't improve much in general after a certain threshold, or if they lack motivation, as we've seen with Yotasuke. While people like Yatora actually get up and do it. I've personally seen this happen multiple times, not only with drawing but also writing, gaming and other skills, since I tend to be naturally better than average at first, but easily surpassed by hardworkers with time.

I agree he definitely has got talent for it (and it was irritating how he constantly denied that) but as others said it's true he practiced way more than his peers and he started out from the bottom, meaning that his improvement would be much more jarring and faster than in the case of his peers who have been drawing for years and thus would improve slower since they are already very good. But it also kind of annoyed me how everything worked out for this guy quite easily (typical shounen mc) and how unrealistic and bland it is that suddenly literally all his life became about art. This dude is one of the most boring characters I've ever seen.

Dude sorry to rain on your rant, but being hardworking combined with passion is not being a genius or having talent.

In the first place a genius is someone who has a slight advantage over others, because he happens to pick up things a bit quicker comared to others. If he doesn't polish that skill while he's young and keeps depending on it only as an advantage, he won't be a genius after becoming an adult.

Plus a person can learn a language he was never aware of before, in the span of half a year. If the person is hardworking and passionate.
