I don’t know if it’s me but I dislike Yaguchi.
He’s boring. Yeah, he’s motivated after seeing one big painting and starts practicing a lot but… idk something is lacking in his character.
He seems mean and rude at times and for some reason he gets to a pretty good level of painting, drawing with pencil/ charcoal and the basics of art history after just a couple months of working, besides not being into art at all previously. I also find it annoying at times when he’s constantly comparing himself to other artists that are way more experienced than him and getting annoyed/ frustrated when his art isn’t like that or that he hasn’t heard of a certain technique or painting or whatever. I know that Yaguchi is new to the world of art but his reaction to some of the characters that are artists… like wow! they have a haircut you haven’t seen before :0 or they dyed their hair lol. I’m not criticizing him for suddenly finding an obsession and spiraling until it becomes everything he wants to do in life but that part seems pretty quick plot wise. I’d love to hear your opinions cause I don’t know if I’m explaining this properly. Like I read in a review of this show - he seems like a bit of a self insert.
(note: I haven’t caught up with the rest of the episodes yet so maybe something happens later?)

edit: so I’ve read all the quotes and stuff and it’s really funny cause I’m an artist, writer and play multiple instruments. I also am taking AP art history. And yes I do compare myself to others and feel disappointed at my work but what I’m saying is I understand that they have years of practice and are really focusing on that particular activity so of course they’re going to be better than someone who just started and knew nothing abt the field before. After finishing the anime my stance did change a little but I still dislike Yaguchi (a little less tho). I realized it’s mostly cause he reminds me of a generic main character (which I stated before) although I see that he really tries and I think that his perspective is unique and his skills can be honed for the better. I think that I’m scared (like what happens in many animes) is that the main character finds an activity that they knew nothing about, works a little and is suddenly amazing (I think most commonly seen in sport animes) and I’ve never really liked that cause it was unrealistic and set up fake expectations for real life people that want to start something new and a sort of “envy” for people that are more experienced in the field that something they worked so hard on can be fairly easy to pick up by talented “main characters”.
so yeah, thanks for the nice criticism, comments and input :)

I think those are fair criticisms especially the one about him being mad about his own progression and comparing himself to artistes that have been doing it far longer than him

yes but nobody is perfect, and I'm sure there's a lot of people of any talent who can relate to him on that scale because that's a very human think to compare yourself and get sad and stuff.

I think he got so obsessed because in the first episode it shows how he literally didn't have a hobby, or really find that much enjoyment in anything in his life, he felt like an empty shell. So art was simply the first and only thing to fill that shell. And also who knows, he mind enjoy other stuff too later on in the series.

At first, I was indifferent to him, but he grew up on me. I don't exactly remember the episode but I think it was around 10th episode that I started liking him.

I mean it really is a relatable thing for me, just being a hard-worker can come with a lot of issue along the way. With Yaguchi it comes from the form of really just comparing himself with others and not having the self-confidence, sure his character traits are unappealing and make him look bad. Though I think that’s what makes him so interesting, and shows us so much of his thought process on how he takes risks in his art paintings. I feel like he really shows us how it can be hard for people to follow their passion and keep there mental health straight at the same time.

It's just a generic SoL story, with bad characters and sometimes art in the bg.

I feel that, except I still haven't found my passion like he has.

You must not be an artist or a musician bro. People in the arts constantly compare themselves to others whether the comparison is good or bad. Getting frustrated with one's own art is a very realistic and real thing. I've made so many songs and riffs that'll never see the light of day because I'm not satisfied with them.

One large inspiration is also the way most people start anything. Countless guitarists for example started playing guitar just by hearing Eddie Van Halen. Everything you've stated is how most artists act. It's realistic, not a con. Also, doesn't this show take place over a longer span than just a few months?

it's called humanity like I'm not even artist(I'm in language major) and as a hardworking person I always compare myself to other people I don't care if they're more experienced than me if I see they're doing so much better than me and I couldn't I also get frustrated, compare myself to them and thought why I'm noy like them even after I worked so hard so I think that's what make Yaguchi beautiful he's so realistic
