I'll give this a few more episodes and if I get entertained by the action or their butchering of history towards favoring Japan I'll continue on it..this first episode was not very impressive imo and the whole superpower stuff is sort of crazy. I don't really know what to think of it other than just something controversial that I should watch even if it's shitty just because of the drama it will be stirring among the other non-Japanese eastern asians that were fucked over by them in that time period.

Instead of seeing that the characters were interesting, the action was good, the technical department was awesome, you are stack on irrelevant details that have nothing to do with an anime being good.

Not sure why people are so surprised at this show taking such an approach at history. Every nation spins history to their own views be it accurate or inaccurate. I mean, seriously? Not wanting to watch the show because it might "praise Imperial Japan"? I'm Chinese myself and I constantly tell people, especially my parents, to just let it go. I can understand that the things Japan did in the past were pretty damn fucked up but holding 70+ year long grudges isn't going to do shit for anyone.

This. Every nation was screwed over by some other nation in the past, and screwed over some other nation too. I should know, I'm from Poland >.>

@political controversy stuff: When Germany makes a show that claims the Nazis were defenders of purity through ethnic cleansing, come back and tell me that all nations were screwed over in the past. When America makes a show that claims the Africans were backward people who deserved to be enslaved, come back and tell me that African Americans should not be upset at watching "Birth of a Nation". Parts of this anime is exactly doing what I'm saying above: the Japanese politicians, who "love peace so much", is promoting friendship between China and Japan in its sphere of Great East Asia Prosperity (or something like that), while it was really a plot to suppress China and ensure Japan will be the dominant country in Asia. Seriously, how is this not different from Germany making a show claiming that the Nazis had to kill Jews, gays, gypsies, etc. for "purifying" Germany? This isn't about holding a grudge, people. This is about Japan's continuous denial of history. Japan's whitewashing of history is not something that happened 70+ years ago, it's happening RIGHT NOW as we are speaking.

Thanks, person who gave me this on another site a long time ago, lol.

I guess I am not the only one who's reminded of Baccano! I thought so even before watching the first episode, but now I am sure.

The animation quality was really good and the story was interesting. I just hope it stays that way for the next episodes too.

Most countries whitewash their history all the time. Can't see what makes this series worse than those 1000+ American war hero movies.

This.

Their Chinese was bad? They aren't chinese get over it.
They're are a great many shows that butcher english, does that mean I drop them? No.
Get over it.

And god forbid a show be set in a controversial time and play the devil's advocate.

So far we have none of this level of political propaganda, we don't even know which exact political ideal the Sakurai Group follows or under whose command they act.
As long as they are not flat-out characterized to be acting under the order of the Tennô, there is far too much room for them to develop to stamp this show with 'political propaganda' now.

By the way, another thing that should be considered is the fact, that while Japan did commit terrible acts during that time-period, it is not like it's impossible that there were Japanese who thought against that political direction. It's like assuming that every last German is a Nazi or every Chinese is a Communist.
This show, if it should be adressing certain events of that time, still depicts people acting in a certain environment. We still have to wait for the plot to unfold to see if the Japanese are actually depicted in a positive light (the chief of Kaburagi Corp. wasn't).
While there should for example be no show that shows the Holocaust in Nazi Germany in a positive light, you still would have characters in such a show acting in a certain manner. You can't have suddenly someone totally acting against the system from within.

Whitewashing of history is not only happening in Japan, it is happening all over the world. To a certain degree history has to be washed then and again, to ensure that a state does not become a puppet to it's own guilt towards other nations and people.
China has its fair share of bloody history, too. As has America, England, France, Spain, Italy, Germany...every damn country in the world.

Well I have not read the whole thing about political controversy but was not at the end mentioned that most of this is just fictional.....anyways character liking.........

Yukina: I love her! Just look at how she is gorgeous=>
....really nice! Particualrly she has a nice power of psychokinesis.....basically read your thoughts and take those who are of interest to her......telepathic communications. I wonder what it is connected with flowers.

Natsume: He looks a little Indian of some kind. One thing I like about him is that he looks to have similar powers to A-ou from Kiddy Grade....he can see further than anyone and predict number of people from far away. He can also share vision as he does with Yukina.

Kazura: After Yukina I like him #3 because he has such a incredible teleportation ability.....he need something to concentrate on to teleport but I find the effects of that great!=>

Really nice power. He also looks to keep his cool a lot and use only when he has to his ability.

Aoi: #2 because I like more his power that Kazura.....amazing how he stops time and can do something in the middle of that like with that person from Liu at the beginning or during the boat scene here=>

That is just incredible! Only problem is that whatever time he uses he has to wait until that used time comes back using this pocket watch? Not sure if that's how it works....but his power has unlimited possibilities as long as he uses it ok.....Aoi full size and a avatar of him for who wants that=>
Loved the 1931 car chase! That was epic!=>
Thank God Aoi came in time to save Yukina but what a nice explosion it was!=>
Nice team pic=>
Overall I am pretty happy with the super powers, organization and what plot will result next.....the Kaburagi plot was ok but I hope things will get more intense. Starts at 8/10

In spoiler my anime list for now.

My excitment dropped a little when the super powers came out. My thought that a war-time spy series would be very cool. The Super powers kinda cheapens it. But I like the style, the animation is high quality. I'm in.

Eh.

I just get irritated for no apparent reason when anime comes up with Japan historical stuffs. I was enough raged when Zetsubou Sensei explained that saying sorry to past colonised countries of Japan is a symptom of guilty complex. This first episode wasn't bad but, I just... this anime is just time bomb for me. I don't want to risk it.

A lot of Koreans like me are sensitive to this topic. I like everything about Japan... except this.

Garbage so far. But could get better. I was expecting a sensible spy dorama and loads of political incorrectness, but I got a superhero pulp adventure without much politics so meh. I'll see if it works with readjusted expectations.

Also HOLY SHIT JAPANESE PEOPLE DON'T SPEAK FLUENT MANDARIN? HOW THE FUCK DARE THEY NOT SPEAK FLUENT MANDARIN, THIS IS ABSURD

Is that some way to put communists and nazis on the same level? :D

Btw, I see that you live in Germany, which for me is the perfect example of a country that has truly achieved peace with its neighbors after the inhumane events of WW II. (Yeah I know, the Americans helped a bit, putting financial pressure on France and Germany after the war for them to stop acting stupid again)

That means that if one region can do it - Europe - the others not achieving the same level of peace and mutual understanding is inexcusable. Which means that Japanese whitewashing history isn't something that you can just brush off since "others do it too". The big problem concerning this whole historical issue in East/South-East Asia is that everyone, including Japanese, Chinese, Koreans, Malaysians, etc... (hell Japan sure fucked up a lot of countries during the war) are all still acting like retards even though there's already a good tutorial on what to do.

tl;dr: It's fun to overanalyse animes. :D

Now concerning this show, I believe it's no way a pro-Imperial Japan propaganda, at least for now. If I am to drop it, it would be because it's kind of boring. But I'll give it a few more episodes since this is:

I don't think you understand. He didn't say "Cool story, bro", I don't know what he said as my knowledge of japanese is limited.

Commie decided to add a meme into the anime, way to fuck over their subs. I'm definately gonna wait till another group subs this before watching any further. I'm tired of all the shit from subs groups like Dattebayo, GG and whoever else. Atleast there are some decent groups out there with fast releases.

Believe me, as a German it's got enough negative sides to it, too.
Even though events are now almost 70 years in the past, it is still considered taboo to be proud of being German, unless you want to be considered a Nazi.
That of course puts us in a rather negative position, concerning the fact that our politicians always seem to try to please every country in the world, just to avoid 'the topic' being raised again.
It seems a bit strange, but being a German, I feel the only country I can openly confess that I am German is Japan, because they were 'in on it' during the war. In every country there's always this drive to make up excuses for being who you are...I know that it's not something that every foreign country still expects, but we are raised like they would do...

So I think Germany is rather the other extreme, compared to Japan, who for a long time did not even want to discuss the existence of that time.
Japan is in a constant state of conflict with it's neighbours.
Germany is in a constant state of guilt towards the world.

Hmm well even if the show portrayed Greater East Asia Co-prosperity sphere as some high sounding ideal in this episode by a JAPANESE, I don't think it's that biased, since it's reflecting the true propaganda during that period. It did depict the reality in that sense.

What would be unacceptable, is that, if the show is trying to depict how the CHINESE just loved this idea of Co Prosperity Sphere and loved the Japanese as liberators- because, that is simply false, at least for the Chinese who did not collaborate with Japanese, or the Chinese masses who were exploited by the Japanese. (again, Collaborators and resistors are not such black and white categories- there were people in history who genuinely collaborated with a colonial regime, thinking that eventually that could liberate their country)

KMT did collaborate with the Japanese for a period, I think it was only in 1936 when Chiang Kai Shek decided to (under the pressure from Soviet Russia) join the Communist to resist the Japanese (for the second time). The first united front only last from 1923-27. and between 27-36, Chiang took a more pro-Japanese stance since he believe that the threat of Communist is greater than that of the Japanese in China. (as he said, Communist is the "cancer", but Japanese is just some mild illness).

HOWEVER, EVEN if the Sakurai group is trying to promote the expansion of Japanese colonial rule under the mask of the Co prosperity sphere (which is real history), I thought that at the end of the anime the main character sort of showed disgust towards that dude in glasses and said that HE was the main target instead? hmmm

LOL and I thought I started this history issue out of boredom (anyone think I was serious about this propaganda thing lol) ...seems like it escalated....

Honestly, all Asians should stop being so sensitive to this issue......and keep watching the anime to see if their suspicions are true instead of dropping it.

Like someone said, if I drop this, it will be because it's bad anime...or because maybe they go too far (I don't think that's gonna happen though)

Thank you.

Also, I think it's important not to dismiss people's reason for disliking the anime (whether it is because for political or historic reason or the weird mandarin). Obviously a lot of people don't give a x about these factors, but I think it's important to keep in mind that people appreciate a series for a whole lot of different reasons, and your priority of reasons in selecting which anime to watch do not have to match anyone else.

OK, I apologize for over-analyzing this show so far, but I think everyone here knows now that this is one of the more controversial moments in history for us East Asians who are not Japanese. Nonetheless, that is a good point.

This is a solid post. I applaud you for the best post in this thread.

Finally @francis: As a native speaker of Chinese, I can tell you I can't understand what they're saying. Sorry, but their Chinese was bad.

No, both are stupid reasons at the moment even if we accept them because the mandarin where spoken by Japanese spies so theres a perfectly good excuse for them to talk badly and historically the show hasn't yet made any real propaganda not to mention it's obviously showing that it is a completely fantastic story since we have guys with super powers.

The Japanese speaking poor Chinese is "inaccurate" because the Chinese troops would have spotted them as Japanese RIGHT away due to their accents. Also, whether the show has propaganda or not remains to be seen, but if it does, you have no right to tell people who are sensitive to this issue to keep watching it just because the victims in history in this case were not your own people.

Thanks, person who gave me this on another site a long time ago, lol.

But that's exactly my point. It didn't show anything yet. The whole thing exist for now only in your minds. It shouldn't even be mention in this thread.

Cant we all just enjoy the show without all the political and historical bullshit? i understand that the mandarin was bad, but it was only for part of the episodes, its not like the whole episode was spoken in it. so how about we just sit back and wait for a couple more episodes before we start bashing this series.

personally, i found the show to be quite enjoyable. the animation was done quite well as well i thought.

oh and btw, lets not talk about historical accurateness considering the main characters have super powers mkay?

Well, it has shown something. Of course, as a whole I don't believe that this episode is really trying to "show" anything but the superpowers of the main characters.

However, they did pull in bits of ACCURATE history in this episode- it is accurate because it really was the rhetoric back then, such as the slight mentioning of KMT and the Greater East Asia Coprosperity Sphere. Depending on how you want to define propaganda, the rhetoric of a "Coprosperity Sphere" is already reflecting the accurate propaganda used by the Japanese in the 1930s.

I do NOT see this anime as a propaganda by itself. Also, I think it is necessary to give credit to this anime for showing something that's historically accurate even when it is under a fantasy context. Just because it is an anime doesn't mean that we should not take it seriously when, the producers of this episode obvioulsy did their research and portray accurate history for its viewers.

The bits revealed in this episode of course gives us absolutely no evidence how the history will be portrayed later on. But saying that it has shown absolutely nothing about history/propaganda BACK in the 1930s in this particular episode is simply untrue.

And I do not think political and historical context of an anime is bullshit, but afterall, it's just me. I enjoy the show so much precisely because it is historically accurate so far. I have not bashed this series at all.

I also don't feel anything about the mandarin in the series. It's nice that they put in the effort to include some mandarin.

Besides, to be honest, I can see why some people would want to drop this series despite the first episode proved to be extremely neutral. We are not in the position to judge without knowing about the other person's upbringing and experience.

It will take a very cold heart to say that the viewer is irrational in dropping the series, if, the viewer's grandparents were victims of Japanese slaughter in Nanking , so the viewer tends to avoid any series that was set in the context of WWII.

Being "over sensitive" is not a fault, or even irrational. It simply means that you have not experienced what the other person has experienced.

Exactly what I was thinking too about giving the anime credit for and about it among other things ....the powers of the characters.

In spoiler my anime list for now.

Pretty much what ericacsy said.

Basically, this anime is getting almost 'flamed' in other sites in Asia; both Korean and Chinese one. I didn't really feel good about this fact since I always had pretty much open view on history; until I read a few more rational view points that made me satisfied enough.

Whenever Japan media bringing up 'If' assumptions in history, especially about the eras on WWI and WWII, it has been never good due to the high proportion of rightists and nationalists (Generally, most of asian country rightists including Korea and Japan are creepy faggots). Basically, those Japan spy organisation went to China can be described as 'terrorists' from some perspective and this anime will definitely focus on idealising it. Statements like 'this is freakin anime and fiction so get over it' isn't really a good explanation, since this anime definitely contains some of the issues which can be highly irritable especially the ones like describing those spys being 'justice' and raising the idea of 'Peace w/e of Eastern-Asia' which was one of the major propaganda used in that era.
