| There is currently some development underway which will result in a long-requested favorite category being adding to the site. While discussing this project, I began thinking of other often-requested favorite categories, and a few new ones which I thought would be fun for users. But the question becomes: What do you do with 5 favorite categories? And then 6 or 8? How do you display those in vertical columns? Then I recall all of the complaints in 2015 when the new profile design was released. Do you know how many people hated the favorites design then? One major complaint was the thumbnails were too small. Another major complaint was, this design is terrible for people who do not read manga! They have 0 manga favorites and a huge gap in their profile. Honestly, I'm not sure there was anyone who liked the favorites design then—the same one everyone seems to feel so passionately about now. With (1) new favorite categories in development and planning, and (2) the complaints of the vertical design in mind, the best solution becomes:
Why was this design change made now? As mentioned above, soon we will have 5 categories of favorites. This is a bigger project that includes favorites as a bonus feature (in answer to previous requests and suggestions). In preparation for this release, the design was changed ahead of time. Please understand that it is often easier for the developers to release changes in small steps to reduce bugs requiring additional time for fixes. Why wasn't a forum announcement made? This is a small design change. There are many other small design changes which do not get forum announcements, and only mentioned on Twitter/Discord. "We're doing this tiny thing because we're planning to do this other big thing, and are discussing doing some more things in the future." No one writes an official site announcement like this. While the step-by-step bullet points I gave above are what I expect will happen, I cannot say anything definitively at this moment. This is why even now, I am creating this as a Suggestion thread and not a Site Announcement. The image quality is horrible! Yep, it's been fixed. I can't click the anime/manga on my Character favorites anymore. Yep, we planned to put the title and information below the thumbnail instead of on the image, but it was much easier for the developers to use the Recommendations layout (title + info on image) in the short term. Reduce the images to fit 10 instead of 8. As written above, the Recommendations design is the easiest to use in the short term. There also becomes issues of title length and no one ever clicking right to see MAL Supporter favorites. Add dark mode instead! I keep saying this but dark mode is no where near as simple as some people seem to think. Please remember most of MAL was coded 15+ years ago by a university student... we're going to get dark mode, but it's going to take a lot of time and we can't stop other development until then. Now since this is a suggestion thread: I would like to hear your suggestions for what kind of favorite categories you might want. To get you started, two long-requested categories are Studios and OP/EDs. I saw a Tweet requesting favorite episodes. What's in your mind? |

| Hearing the reasons behind the update and the future planned has definitely helped me warm up to the change. Though I do feel if this announcement was made earlier there would be less backlash, I’m sure many users here felt blindsided by the sudden change and lack of communication. Some category suggestions I have: Instead of an OP/ED category, I think it’d be cool for there to be a film score category that can encompass all the music of a given anime. Expand the people section into multiple categories such as directors, mangaka and seiyuus. |

| The difference between the way favorites looked before the change a few years ago and after is much less compared to what we have now. I don't believe that not being able to see all your favorites is a "small change" and can be comparable to what we had then. But from this post, I understand that this is permanent and we aren't likely to get a toggle option. I must say this is utterly disappointing. For me the aesthetics isn't what matters, but the functionality. The fifth favorite category you speak of - I honestly have no idea what it even could be. The examples you gave are nowhere near important as what we have there right now, and more importantly, I'm not sure people who continue to use MAL want it to turn into a layout similar to Anilist. If we did, we would be there already. The result of this is that I will be cancelling my supporter subscription - not as a threat or backlash, but because the reason I got it in the first place was the favorites. Sad to see this happen. |

I would like to hear your suggestions for what kind of favorite categories you might want. To get you started, two long-requested categories are Studios and OP/EDs. I saw a Tweet requesting favorite episodes. What's in your mind? @Kineta Favorite OP/ED is an absolute must. Favorite studios and episodes...? Honestly meh :/ Suggestion: Custom Favorites Row (that links to our blog) If we can go wild with suggestions, I personally would love to have "favorite anime scenes and clips" to really express myself. But such a thing I don't think others would like (maybe?) and how can it even be implemented here....? A lot of people may feel the same about their and other's suggestions. So, instead can we have one or two CUSTOM favorite rows where the user can name the row w/e they want and name the favorites, and UPLOAD the pics/etc? And the favorites all link to a blog page where we want to expand on it. I could put something like my favorite anime scenes and clips, or favorite manga pages, and expand on it through a blog. Then I can really express that to visitors, and others with obscure favorite ideas can use it their way. Also you could use the custom row for other obscure things like: * favorite visual novels * favorite manwa * favorite video games * favorite non-OP/ED anime songs (many of the best anime songs are not OP or ED, a real anime fan knows this lol, see Naruto and Rozen Maiden OSTs) * favorite non-anime animations or movies (MUH AVATAR!!! MUH CASTLEVANIA!! MUH ARCANE!!!!) So you see, it covers a wide range of suggestions with a custom row and lets us suit our own tastes. lmao with custom rows you could even do top friends or most hated anime characters/series which I've seen requested so many times lol 🤔 You could also make custom rows a sub-only thing to possibly get those numbers up. But imo if you really want those sub numbers to grow, I think MAL supporter has to be advertised harder through more notifications and announcements, with the exclusive features they'd get, in order to entice ppl to sub. People might say- Why not just use a blog or your About Me? .... really? If you think this way, sorry but you just don't get it. I want my own favorite stuff this way as I suggested, along with the fave anime and characters sections, and I think others do based on what I read, its obviously a more effective way for anyone to express their preferred favorites to a visitor rather than have it buried in the blog or About Me where it might not get noticed. People will abuse it and put silly stuff! Yeah they already do that with everything else. Think of the greater good, and the enormous possibilities, rather than your .00001% share of bad outcomes which aren't even that bad anyways. You gonna take away comments cuz of bots? lol of course not and you report em as always. Obligatory cat for Kineta. (btw Kineta if you wanna follow up, although I don't expect its needed, please DM or comment, as I don't have notifications on and I forget to check threads outside my group, sorry :/) |

| The problem is that whatever change is being implemented, there will be people who are unhappy with it. That's only natural and you can't blame anyone for that. There will also always be people who like said changes, but you're a lot less likely to say something when you happy and that's why it seems like nobody likes the change right now. I did not intend to say anything, but I want to speak up as someone who highly agrees with the change of favorites! I always thought that it looked horrible when you have favorites with long names or favorite characters from Anime/Manga with extremely long names that needed several rows. It made the favorites look uneven and messy, I absolutely hated that and was hoping for another solution. With the recent change, however, it looks so much cleaner and better. I no longer hate looking at my favorites, lol. Looking forward to new favorite categories as well. |

| @Kineta Favorite characters and people should be visible without having to click the down arrow, are you going to fix that at some point? Idk about this new category you're planning to add, but the number of favorite rows that are visible by default should be 4 at least. | Umm, okay. But still, no thank you. I barely had any favorites displayed on my profile anyway, so the lack of them doesn't really affect me. But I'd like for you to remove the section completely for those who don't have any favorites, like me. It's going to look more neat that way. This is a suggestion. |

| There's no point in having favorites if they're not displayed on your profile. Just bring back the vertical columns without the text to the side and have a button at the top of each one to then display it while pushing the other columns out of the way. Or just bring back the old design exactly as it was but let people choose which 4 categories they'd like to display. I imagine most people just add favorites because its an option and not because they actually care that much about each category. The People category is literally just where everybody puts the same 10 voice actors that voice every single show every season for the past 5 years. It won't hurt anyone to be rid of that one. |

| 1. Openings 2. Endings 3. Insert songs 4. Categorize people as bands/singers/authors/directors/voice actors separately I'd love it if there was a character rating as well, like in anime and manga. It'd be really interesting. |

| So, no option to toggle between both design types or something like that is even being considered? My issue is that I think it looks bad, aside from being worse from a functionality standpoint. Your post is a bit of a joke, I'll try to stay calm. Nothing stopped you guys from just adding more categories while also keeping the favorites vertical or even maybe adding a button that takes you to people's custom lists (with this design layout, favorites are hidden anyway). Many options aside from lazily slapping the mobile style lists in the profiles. Then, you seem proud of users constantly complaining about the design choices, which is generally not a good thing, and in no way justifies making things worse. If random people making Tampermonkey scripts can move around or entirely delete parts of the profile, I'm sure MAL'S genius devs can manage to do it as well for unwanted favorites lists. This isn't a small change. Be honest and tell us you knew few users actually wanted this, so you guys just sneaked in the update. It's silly to say that something as important as the profile layout isn't that big of a deal to announce on the forums. Secret Santa or whatever gets about announcement, however. Give me a break. Next you address some basic issues of usability that wouldn't exist if this change had never been made, and it shows how poorly thought out thus whole mess was. As for dark mode, something users have actually been clamoring for about a decade, just gets just a "it's too hard because spaghetti code". Again, extensions and scripts made by randoms can do it, what progress is the dev team making towards dark mode? I guess the official response is "go use those instead ". Overall, a rather embarrassing response that completely fails at addressing complaints from users. |

| Thanks for the communication. With all the over the top vitriol being posted right now, I can imagine that it would be tempting to not engage, but you did anyway. I appreciate it. In my opinion, the most important favorite category to add would be novels. With how common it is now to have a manga and light novel version of the same story, it doesn't make sense to keep them combined on the profile. Also, novels should just be separated from manga in general on the site. Kineta said: As written above, the Recommendations design is the easiest to use in the short term. There also becomes issues of title length and no one ever clicking right to see MAL Supporter favorites. It is good to know that it isn't set in stone. I understand the points you are making, but the reality remains that this current format it much less easy to use than how it was. In my opinion, having everything be able to show up at one time is more important than having them be the most convenient size, to an extent at least. An idea would be to go ahead and try to make the images smaller to make 10 fit nicely and just shorten the title if it is too long with the ability to see the full title if you hover over the image or click on it. With supporter favorites, you could make another row of 10 below the current row that also fully shows up. With all this, we could go back to the ease of just having one click to reveal the full list of favorites, assuming the other favorite categories are still hidden below like they are now. |

I feel like this would be best when (1) a favorites page is added and (2) you can choose which favorite categories appear on your profile. Then the down arrow is removed and the one-click is to go to the favorites page. Four rows is already overwhelming and five will be even more so with the new category. Imagine 10 rows with 5 categories... So I think having 0 for people who don't want to show any and a max of 3 categories for those who want to show some off would be good in its final form :thinking:With supporter favorites, you could make another row of 10 below the current row that also fully shows up. Please remember most of MAL was coded 15+ years ago by a university student... The site is now larger than 15 years ago and times have changed, so maby its time to MAL 2.0? With good code and better layout. MAL is outdated, the functions that are the norm these days do not exist here, and the new changes do not bring anything that is currently needed. For example, the "anime search" feature is terribly clunky and poor (if we are talking about search options). So I have to use other sites like aniDB or Anilist, because their system is much more extensive and friendlier. But for you, the favorites list is more important than the useful functions and user convenience. |

Yep, we planned to put the title and information below the thumbnail instead of on the image Hope this gets fixed soon. This is the most bothering thing for me about this design. This is a small design change. There are many other small design changes which do not get forum announcements, and only mentioned on Twitter/Discord. I personally feel this was a bigger change than that toggle option which was announced in forum. (the current favorite layout complaining discussion even have much more reply than toggle announcement made way back ) But even if its late, thanks for clarifying things. Reduce the images to fit 10 instead of 8. As written above, the Recommendations design is the easiest to use in the short term. There also becomes issues of title length and no one ever clicking right to see MAL Supporter favorites. I have a suggestion, instead of swapping left and right. A set of two row set would work much better. It would be very helpful to see all the favorite together in one page. I would like to hear your suggestions for what kind of favorite categories you might want. To get you started, two long-requested categories are Studios and OP/EDs. I saw a Tweet requesting favorite episodes. What's in your mind? Not sure about op/ed or episode category in favorites. But favorite studio doesn't sound as bad idea. As for my suggestion, why not use the existing categories? https://myanimelist.net/topanime.php -tv series -movies -ova -ona -special Or *separating anime, donghua or aeni can also be a nice idea Or Based on source is a another nice idea https://myanimelist.net/topmanga.php -manga -one shorts -doujinshi -light novel -novel -manhwa -manhua |

| Nothing said here has even the apparence of an argument. This new change is just too heterogeneous with the point of this site and the rest of the layout like anime progress -what makes it better than anilist- which is sober functionnality. If you want other categories just make it so that MAL Supporters can add/remove their fav categories.. ? If you want more than the 4 essential ones that we already had just make the new one sub-categories that will go under them <h1>People</h1> <h2>Directors</h2>, <h2>Voice Actors</h2>, etc for example. Just please revert to the old look this is way too ugly and inconvenient. |

| Thanks for finally posting a official announcement some days after the change was made and several threads emerged without any official saying a single word. (Aside from the discord where not every user is in) I don't know if my opinion is valuable at all. But my biggest point for the new layout is the fact that I payed for supporter to have 20 favorites displayed. As they are now hidden by default, this perk is rendered useless for me. I might think about resubscribing because I still love MAL but I want to offer three thoughts about the layout (if this is the right place - since the other thread didn't have any official statement that was probably not the correct place) 1. I would like all favorites to be displayed (expanded) with 1 extra click max. 0 clicks would be the best of course. This is the perk to flex that I support this site. If images need to be smaller for that to happen, then making them smaller is an option. 2. Giving users the options to switch between the old layout (the source code is not deleted forever I feel, but just commented out) would of course make everyone the most happy. Letting them live with the fact that they will not be able to make use of the new future fav categories is a drawback every user can decide on their own (just like the modern anime list design. People who prefer the traditional one are fine with not being able to display the things that are only possible in the new one) 3. It would be nice to make the favorites responsible. Meaning: If I only have 3 favorite categories (lets say anime, manga and characters) then fit the size of the favorite block accordingly. If I want a fourth category (lets say people) then change the size responsively. This way everything could be displayed, with items getting smaller as the number of displayed items grows. I can imagine this to be a lot harder to implement compared to suggestion #2 and probably most users would still complain because it might break the "identity" of the site they got used to. Thank you for working on MAL and don't let all the negativity demotivate you. We still like the website, we just loved it before as well and for the time being the new update looks like it just makes things more complicated because we can't see the mysterious benefit you have planned for the future just yet. |

I hope you will get hired by MAL to implement this. Because I love it. It has all the things MAL staff wants to add in the future with possibilities to expand new caterogies (maybe its possible to switch around the order like on the Panel). But at the same time it keeps the old layout so people who gotten used to it (and have 20 favorites) still are able to display all of them in the way they did before. And if not, I am aware that we have capable users in the community. So if the team decides not to give a possibility to revert back to they layout, maybe @hacker09 can make it possible with a Tampermonkey userscript. So that it will look exactly as it did before. |

If it really was a 'tiny thing', users wouldn't be bothered by it as much as they did. Kineta said: Reduce the images to fit 10 instead of 8. As written above, the Recommendations design is the easiest to use in the short term. There also becomes issues of title length and no one ever clicking right to see MAL Supporter favorites. Sorry, I can't not interpret this as "If we can't fix the inconvenience caused by the new design for MAL Supporters and their long favorites lists, then users with shorter lists do not deserve their fix as well". I agreed with. It's far better. For the new, it's not bad but it's very tiresome to unroll vertically every time. |

Kineta said: Now since this is a suggestion thread: I would like to hear your suggestions for what kind of favorite categories you might want. To get you started, two long-requested categories are Studios and OP/EDs. Hopefully a studio category is approved, but I think OPs/EDs category is too much. |

| Why didn't you make this post in the first place, this wasn't a 'tiny' change at all. Let me tell you that for Lead Admin, that was some of the weakest arguments to back your change in design, it's easier to say that you don't care about our opinion and the change is permanent, because everyone is already aware of that. While some users gave good arguments and solutions in this thread you only seem to reply to the ones praising it. |

El-Melloi said: I wrote this quick fix for myself so I don't have to click on the right and left arrows, it's an ugly solution but it works (please mention me if you have a better one!). I haven't tested it but I'm guessing that it will look pretty bad if you have more than 10 favourites. .fav-slide-block .fav-slide .btn-fav { margin-right: -11px; transform: scale(0.86); } .fav-slide-block .btn-fav-slide-side { display: none !important; } Thanks for offering this piece of code. It already looks quite a bit better. Here's a preview for anyone wondering how it looks btw (ft. my faves): Btw, for anyone wondering how to use it, you install the browser extension Stylus and then while on MAL click on its icon and on "Write a new style for this website", paste this code and save (optionally also refresh the page). Now all 10 things will show up, though the images are obviously smaller. |
