I just watched eps 9 but I don't understand, what's the real problem Ryuji is having?? Does he have a problem with his passion for painting?? because he just withdrew in the exam or it was more because of his identity problem where both his parents wanted him to return to normal or in the sense of being a real man but he still wanted to be him. I know so far she's shown to only love men....Can someone explain to me what the real problem Ryuji is??

At this point, it looks like Ryuji’s looking for something to save him from all the pain, and art was just one thing that gave him brief escape. Once others of greater talent presented themselves, he seemed to briefly redirect to fashion, but then lost interest in making art entirely with his home situation escalating. Now it seems like he just needs somebody to love him for who he is.

i dont think he redirected to fashon because others were better than him. It‘s more like fashion is his real passion - at least more real than the japnese art he forced upon himself for his grandma‘s sake

I think Yuka's real issue is that there's no one who can properly understand him (them?). Yuka so far identifies as a man, but his gender expression is stereotypically feminine. He is popular with women, who see him as a confidante, but not as a man, and with men who think he is a woman, but reject him once they realise he is not. It gets much, much worse when his family is concerned. His parents are disrespectful, borderline hostile to him and who he is and everything he does to express that identity, and they only "tolerate" him because their family tradition is in Japanese Classical art, and Yuka excells at it. But it's not what he wants to do, he wants to be in fashion, and has a talent for it too. He only does Japanese art because of his grandma who is the only person who treats him with any kindness in his house, but that affection is also suffocating. Yuka is suffocated, and he doesn't need someone to save him per se, just someone to tell him that it's alright to drown, and if possible drown with him for a while. Drowning doesn't mean death here, it's just like putting your head under water until you run out of air, and then somehow you come up, and start all over again. Yatora is probably that person to yuka.

There's much more to say on Yatora and Yuka's friendship. But Imma stop before i get realy carried away. This is my interpretation anyway. Also, normal is subjective.

It looks like a combination of both. He never really liked japanese style but he forced himself to paint it to make his grandmother happy. Then there is the stuff at home where he says that his parents have never been supportive of him and the only person who cares about him is his grandmother, who consequently treats him as a child. In other words: the dude is just fed up with life, understandably so.

It should be clear to everyone after the next two episodes. They are going at a fast pace so one episode may suffice as well. If you're still unsure, then you'll have to read up the relevant manga chapters.

I don't really know whether Yuka have any passion in art / painting in general, but what we knew is that, Japanese painting is not his/her passion.

From the blue haired girl, you can see that Yuka's interested in Western clothes. Yuka chose Japanese painting solely because of his/her grandma. He/she afraid to tell Grandma that he/she prefer Western to Japanese painting, since grandma is the only family that accept him/her, afraid that she would stop loving him/her.

There's only 1 more chapter in the manga for Yuka's arc, the next episode (ep 10) will be the last episode for Yuka's arc.

It's called puberty. Like when your mom asked you why you paint your hair black and you said its not a phase.

His problem is that he have a mental illness and everyone around his is reinforcing his delusions and supporting him, instead of saying it straight and telling him to get help.

His exam was about "Japanese art", he doesn't want to do study that. He wants to study "Fashion art". But feels that choosing fashion, will be betraying his only ally, his grandmother. Add to that his parents stressing him out and the result is what we are seeing.
