I agree with you. I watched this show on Funimation. I thought it was the original one by the title then quickly realized it was not lol. But after watching I’m looking forward to watching season 3 and eventually I will watch the original because it’s a classic.

I wouldn't exactly call this a beginners' anime because of the heavier themes the show deals with, but Die Neue These is a pretty good starting point if you want to get into the original novels. It mirrors the novels with regards to the core of the story identically, but is missing a lot of details that gives additional context behind them. It is still incomplete though.

This is where the original OVAs come in. The whole 110-episode adaptation is already complete, and it gets the details much better than DNT, but takes more creative licenses when it come to the core of the story.

If you want to get into the novels, start with DNT first. If you don't want to, perhaps you should start directly with the original OVAs then come back to DNT later.

Season 3 this year is gonna adapt up to like episode 55 in the OVA probably.
