I used to think this was a "stupid but well made" series but after finally finishing the manga I realize it's an all time classic. it mixes self aware idiot humor, serious themes and earnest emotion so well. its themes & messages of reframing fascist imagery & the beauty of samurai dedication aimed towards "doing good for humanity" instead of "serving a lord or master" are also something very unique to Yamaguchi's identity as an artist & writer

a perfect optimistic companion piece to Shigurui. Shigurui is about a samurai unable to break free from the shackles of his servile, masochistic upbringing and Kakugo is about a truly transcendental samurai who kept the fundamental philosophy & aesthetics but used them to topple villains and help the weak

Top 3 best mangas of all time easily. Sad that lots of people seem to not like it for no reason.

it's just "over the top gore and sex jokes = low brow = bad", nothing more. no one can think about its legitimately honest, inspiring ideas cuz it would be "cringe" to take something like this seriously... even though it's just a more exaggerated version of the shonen tradition of starting out willfully stupid then getting progressively earnest. Otokojuku, Kinnikuman, Dragon Ball all had this development; Kakugo just takes the early immature humor further and gets really over-the-top with its gross-out comedy. Yet it's done so skillfully you can obviously tell the author isn't an idiot.

quiet down son, if that's all you got from the manga then you were actively not paying attention.

@SeiteiSouther I blame the OVA. Which is unfortunate because there they even intentionally featured Mitsuko Horie, which was an inspiration for the manga staff during the harsh production period and in which Tsumiko Horie was based on.

But foreign fans have no idea about such trifles
