Let's also not forget that this anime is only 13 episodes. They've already wasted one. Will they really be able to cram in enough depth within the characters and the storyline in the remaining 12 episodes? I certainly hope so.

Oooh. I'm curious now. You can put on your director hat. How would you have done this episode differently? An episode that is obviously meant just as an introduction to the world and its few characters?
Why are people so quick to attack and challenge a person simply because that person said something something they didn't like to hear. I think it's logical for me to feel that capturing a viewers interest with enough info on the first episode is considered to be important, especially since it's such a short series. If Angel Beats! was planned to be something longer, I wouldn't be complaining about it.

Attack? How is that an attack? You make a statement on how you feel the episode was wasted. Just because I ask you to elaborate on your own statement doesn't mean it's an "attack". Personaly, I feel the first episode accomplished what it set out to do. Lay the ground work by introducing the Whatever-the-hell BattleFront, Angel, and showing how a basic operation goes down while sprinkling humor in between.

I was just trying to see why you feel it was "wasted". I could easily agree with your ideas, which is why I was just asking for them.

Wow I didn't notice it at first‚ but the series already have Off-Models... http://www.sankakucomplex.com/2010/04/03/angel-beats-quality-from-the-get-go/
But that still won't stop me from enjoying the series!XD And this will be cleaned up for the DVD release anyway so its ok.

Goodness some people have good eyes. Then again I'm usually busy reading subs and don't get as much time to view the animation as people who can speak Japanese. Even then, the animation and artwork was stunning for the most part so I feel this anime was destined to be brought down, maybe people weren't happy that a different studio (Not Kyo-Ani) were behind this Key anime.

Most mistakes are excusable here though, the sniper one is a bit odd though. Also, she isn't the only character that resembles Haruhi so people need to stop using it as an excuse to avoid the anime/put it down. Lots of anime characters are similar, boohoo.
Yeah, the actual animation was still very well done, and sure P.A. Works is "New" to the game, but they do great animation (As proved with CANAAN). I think P.A. Works was a great choice and remember who did the Key adaptations first, the below average studio Toei Animation and even with the Off-Models, this is leaps and bounds ahead of those. And people really need to stop complaining about the originality aspect as most characters start out as cliches/one dimensional but then develop and become great (Just like in Haruhi, Samurai Champloo, and Keys other works).

I can't help but feel everyone is being too judgemental at this point. Give it about three episodes to work everything out, otherwise you're just jumping the gun.[/quote said:

Agree only 1episode has been released

1st episode is the premise of the rest episode. they're already show us the "formula" of this anime.

1. unique concept
2. lame joke about still alive after being killed
3. messy pace

and i'm not sold. but yeah let wait after episode 2, if what i said is really their formula of this anime. i will lol'd once again about one more anime get overhyped by their fanboy.

ow god... even the action is so-so... u all have right call me envy or sumthing like that, to be honest.

Odd, I thought that a formula can only be derived in anime through repetition?

Who knew that one occurrence could generate a formula?

Hard to judge after one episode.

I agree that it is a unique concept and I love the animation, but like fertygo said "messy pace" the episode seemed to jump around a lot.

My favorite new favorite drink "Key coffee" haha

And i have problem with the script too, the dialoque is very cheesy and like wasting your time, its just seems they prolonged some useless chat with "empty" dialoque.

Again, this is true, but generic character designs don't necessarily make generic characters.

I'm not sure i'd agree about the empty dialogue, but could you maybe give a specific example? It's fine if you don't, but it would help us understand where you're coming from.

If you had honestly noticed them and planned to tell us, I imagine you would have screencapped them when you first watched them. >_>

And i'm not necessarily expecting you to watch two more episodes of it. Just don't expect us to take your opinion seriously if it's based on a single episode.

Perhaps, but we can't say that for sure until we've seen the rest of the episodes. Again with the gun, and the jumping...

Still, I hope they won't stick to that formula. That would be lame.

Either way, we don't fully understand how this world works, or why. Once that's out of the way, things will probably be clear.

http://www.sankakucomplex.com/2010/03/31/angel-beats-creator-key-founder-jun-maeda-interviewed/

So, that led to things becoming hectic (at the studio), and it ended up with Animation Director 平田雄三 / Katsuzou Hirata needing to tell me, “Technically, anime is something that needs to be written on the assumption of fitting into 20-odd minutes, but this is just crammed full of elements you wanted to fit in. It might be overdoing it.”

Should have listened to him.

Because that wasn't my intention from the start? That I just did it for some half-assed fun since I didn't take this seriously? And here I thought it's too obvious.... guess I was wrong, sowwie =P

And i'm not necessarily expecting you to watch two more episodes of it. Just don't expect us to take your opinion seriously if it's based on a single episode.

You talk as if you're the one deciding whether I should continue this or not. It's a habit of mine and I've decided to do so because once in a while, there are late boomer shows that become good later on so I'm not as narrow-minded as the others who jump the gun too early. I don't wanna miss hidden gems among the crap we have nowadays even if it's a very time wasting method.

One more thing, this is the thread about the 1st ep and I express how I feel about it, don't you ever learn that every shows have its up(s) and down(s)? Therefore my opinion will change if it meets my expectations and stays the same if it remains generic and predictable. Seems to me like you're not even realizing this fact yet, thus I see no need to further discuss this anymore....<_<

Yes, but you were making comments that referred to the series as a whole, like "A bunch of various muscular dudes with some Moe shit girls gonna gang up on a small petanko girl maybe for 4-6 eps or so".

Also, when I said about giving it three episodes, you'll notice I wasn't talking to you, hence the word "everyone". And it was a suggestion, not me telling everyone to do that.

^^Above: There were certain elements that were OK, but non I would call "good"...

Notice the word 'maybe'? That's merely my prediction for the future conflict between SSS & Tenshi-nhan, you can say it's half-assed assumption based on the poor premise of the 1st ep, not my judgement to the whole series, is it clear now or you need MOAR explanations from my hazy comment?

There are people that like this for their own reasons.
There are people that don't like this for their own reasons
And then there are people that are trolls who want to derail every hyped thing just because it is hyped.

Ignore the opinions of the third category of people.

Spring 2010 is shaping up to be a great season and Angel Beats is easily the one ahead of the rest.

I haven't been a fan of Jun Maeda's past work, so suffice to say I wasn't expecting anything from this... The premise is pretty weak and all that exposition didn't help it, but maybe now that it's out of the way, things will get interesting..... I'll stick around to see for another episode.

CoalGuys should sub every ep of this shit like they did with ep 1. So much more entertaining, and I wouldn't bother watching a show this cliche by itself otherwise.

Nothing special, but it was enjoyable to watch.

It has potential just like Sora no Woto had, and now is just a matter of question if they will use it, or will it turn into another generic slice of life. Time will tell...

Okay let's see. Art style is generic, animation sucked for most of the episode, story is kind of fucked up and overall this has a Haruhi feeling to it which is a big minus 1 for me. I see metaphoric bullshit coming at us just to make it deep.

This whole 'not submitting to society's conformism' theme is certainly interesting but more than one anime studio have failed the execution in the past so my hopes aren't high.

Before spring 2010's start this has been flagged as the future overhyped show of the season. Unfortunately this first episode just confirms it. Although it's way too soon to judge, 10 pages probably filled with flame wars between fanboys/girls and hateboys/girls doesn't help the overhyped side.

Okay... Excellent animation and characters. But EP1 was pure info-dumping, and as someone who doesn't know the original story (VN, or manga if it has any) this kinda left me with a (?) expression.

I'll see through this till the end since it's KEY.

As far as I know, this is the original story Whitewolf. No game/manga of this exists that I know of. There will be a manga based off the anime though, if I remember right reading that on ANN.

Well, the episode overall was okay IMO. The introduction was good for the most part, got the main characters and story is going in the right direction. The protagonist, Otonashi is a pretty solid character so far. Basically, he’s on a journey of self-recovery (his memories) and this “angel” character is really interesting (want to know more). Animation quality is great as expected from Key ^_^. I’m happy to see that the protagonist is not some weak,”monkey” as in other animes *cough* “Omamori Himari” (never liked him,Yuto from the start >_> and even in the end he’s still the same). Anyways back on topic, he shows he’s got some “guts” and can handle a gun ;D. I’d like to see the development of his personality over the series and his “role” in the “club”. Does he have some hidden powers that he has not discovered? Could he be related to “Angel” somehow? Or maybe… could grab himself a romantic relationship with one of the characters :O?

It's too early to say if this series will become an enjoyable one or a complete train wreck.Well, looking forward to the next episode.
Really expecting this series to be good. Don’t let me down Key!

Side note: Did anyone catch the Key reference? (The coffee XD)

Agreed, anyone who would rate 10/10 after one episode and post up a goddamn review is an idiot. (No offense).

Still, rating it 1/10 just because of that is kinda childish... I daresay it might be sinking to their level?

I think we need to do something about really early reviews on short series like this one.

This was pretty good for a first episode. Goes without saying that the visuals were more than nice. The score is pretty good as well. Already a few tracks that I look forward to hearing again.

A lot more comedy in this than I was expecting. I'm fine with that, especially considering the director we have, but I'm more interested in the drama this has to offer.

One of the best starts to a series that I've yet seen; I'll be looking forward to this immensely.

Also, can't wait for "Crow Song" (the music played during the operation/concert) to be released. Cool song.

Hmmm....

So, I watched the first 5 minutes of CoalGuys' subs, and quickly realized that wasn't fair, so I downloaded Mazui. Overall, I'd say that some of the animation and production (lighting, angles, etc.) were good. But the character design is very dull, and I was surprised to see such discrepancies from one shot to the next. I'm reminded of the very beginning of the episode where the main girl is holding the gun, and she is proportioned one way, then they shot her from behind, and she looks so much thinner, and more petite, and then they shoot another angle, and she looks different again. That is kind of inexcusable for a first episode, especially when the animation wasn't fluid enough to warrant such mistakes.

The scenario is by far the most interesting part, since Key is quickly tossing in the supernatural element of the show as opposed to using it as deus ex for the end with little explanation. Still, though, I'm sure very little will be explained as opposed to what is necessary to completely understand what's going on, since this is how Key adaptations have always been.

The characters are blah at best. No one stands out for being original, or even a refreshing take on their archetype. Normally, the character design would help there, but since everyone looks either generic or an allusion to another character, I'm just totally bored, and it makes the "comedy" less enjoyable since it's all so obvious and by the numbers. I will give them credit for having a lot of guys in the cast, though. That's a sharp difference from Key's past casts, and my pants enjoy that decision.

Finally, there was way too much exposition for my taste. I'm not really a fan of trying to pack the first episode with the philosophy of the show, because it more often than not comes off as amateurish, as it does here.

So, rating the show off of this episode, I'd give it a 5/10 just because the story could have potential. The episode itself, though, I'm going to go with a 2/5, since there were far more negatives than positives.

I might go and watch CoalGuys' version now.
