I've been diagnosed with autism as an adult.

It's a long story and i'm sorry if there isn't much discussion about this, but i wanted to get this off my mind. But i have a little brother who is much younger then me (he's only 8, i'm in my 20's) and his school requested he be tested. He was diagnosed with autism. My mom wanted me to get tested since she noticed that i had similar behaviors to him when i was a kid.

It wasn't an official diagnosis, but they said it's highly likely i'm on the spectrum as well and may have to do a few more tests to be sure.

I'm not sure what to think now. I guess i'm surprised nobody really thought to get me tested as a kid.

I agree it's strange that adults thought to test your brother but not you, even though your behaviors were similar. I understand that's quite common, however.

Well if it makes you feel any better, you're far from the only one. I got diagnosed with Asperger in my 20s. And I even did some tests for autism as a child but guess they never came to a diagnosis for some reason (admittedly those tests were just those one page questionnaires).

i guess there wasn't much autism awareness when you were 8. people had this condition in all of history and it got only discovered less than 100 years ago. hitler for example never got his asperger diagnosis (see my substack for more on that).

No worries op, just get yourself one of those "Please be patient, I have autism" hats and people will understand.

Continue living your life the way you did until this point, perhaps? Everything else would be nonsensical.

Like the guy above said, if you were living a content, functional life before the diagnosis then focus on continuing that, you know that any diagnosis will not hinder you being independent/functional. Sometimes focusing on labels can do more harm than good.

I guess when i was growing up, Autism wasn't as understood as it is today. That's all i can think of. She didn't think of getting me tested till my brother got suggested to be tested.

My coworkers thought I had aspergers. My school gave me a iq test once since I was socially awkward. I did very well, and got promoted to ap classes.

That's tuff, but if you were doing fine before, then just keep living life like how you've been doing all this years.

If it doesn't affect your life in any way, then don't worry about it.

I mean he does get really angry and has temper tantrums whenever something doesn't go his way. Like here, when he finds out that Santa isn't real.

Oh, bummer. I'm not sure why it'd take so long either if it's just a questionnaire. Maybe they have too many patients to analyze or other parallel responsibilities.

I see. So it's more complicated than I thought. They probably have to analyze data and compare to other results from other people. Maybe your result has a particular issue that is more delicate too.
