THIS IS AN ANIME ONLY DISCUSSION POST. DO NOT DISCUSS THE MANGA BEYOND THIS EPISODE.
----------------------------------------
Yaguchi is learning composition work from Ooba-sensei, which is one way to rise above the ranks and make your work stand out above the rest. Drawing replicas isn't just aout the art of copying, but knowing WHY and HOW you can make it better.

But competition is stiff, and this oil painting Summer class is not for the unprepared. To see everyone else doing abstract art, Yaguchi must've thought that what he's doing with his canvas does not fit. To have a fellow mate like Kuwana give him tips to do art, that at least signifies a direction for Yaguchi.

To aim a high place, Yaguchi is doing great, and Kuwana's to be expected...to fail? The 1st place is not for the faint-hearted, and this famous "curse" is a rumour that needs to be beaten. While Sekai and Hashida didn't fare as well, it's "exam art" that gets chosen to the school of choice, NOT art that'd measure up to levels of the actual schools. It's just an exam prep, but the importance is how you see it as a starting point, and unfortunately for Sekai, he didn't take that well and quit cram school.

To get a better idea, Saeki-sensei recommends Yaguchi to Geidai to see just how the school is like, and he drags his clique along, even for a cultural festival. But it's just like old habits to get drunk from coffee and forget all about art. A chance encounter with Yotasuke's mom to bring him around Geidai to see all the different art pieces, and nothing stands out for the former. But Yaguchi sees otherwise, and to him, it looked like Sekai just gave up altogether.

Just draw your own art, Yaguchi. If Geidai is where you wanna go, then prove it with your heart, have faith in it. Don't draw "exam art".

Looks like it's not all about imitation when you're copying someone's art and trying to replicate it. Yaguchi has to learn that as well right now even he's going for a certain style. Yotasuke is quite frustrated with the kind of art he's seeing at the cram school and for someone like him, I can see what's the problem there. Seeing that made Yaguchi even more confused about what to even believe in. At least, he got a few suggestions from Kuwana, so that's nice.

Things are getting quite complicated in this show and Yaguchi needs to sort these confusions out himself. But, I can't blame him since it's his first time with art. He's still asking too many questions about himself for what's right or wrong, what should he do?. This is such a relatable situation for many of us as well. I feel so bad for Yaguchi.

Yaguchi's path to find his own style of art is starting at this point. Using art and replicating it won't work anymore. Well, with the help of Ooba-sensei, it will be done in no time. Well, the competition is something that they should work on with all their might. Otherwise, their doomed to fail. Yaguchi's is pretty lucky to be in the same group as Kuwana. With some tips from her, he managed to do pretty good. He even ranked higher than he expected and Kuwana placed first. Which is a curse. Yotasuke can't take it anymore. Understandable, his pretty much above everyone else and making this ''stupid exams pieces'' is quite frustating for him. Sometimes, you just have to go out and forget everything. Otherwise, you'll end up in a cycle of depression.

Already at chapter 8 of the manga. This is a failed adaptation in my book. Just trying to enjoy it in some way..

I saw the painting "The Desperate Man" by Gustave Courbet and the painting "The Sea at Les Saintes-Maries-de-la-Mer" by Vincent van Gogh, so happy to see their paintings in anime.

Yeah, each painter has their own characteristics, the atmosphere in the class was kinda heavy. Alao Yatora could get drunk from drinking coffee, lmao.

Everything about Blue Period comes off so passionate, it's lovely. Every moment carries purpose and has feeling to it, it's not just dragging along as exposition for the story or used to make pretty pictures. The only thing that it's really missing is some better pacing. It's not bad by any means, but there's moments that skip about and feel like there's other content that should be filling the gaps. You just sort of feel like you're being tossed around from A to B at times. Aside from that though, there's not really much else you could ask for here. Great characters and interactions, wonderful story and emotion, and incredible art everywhere you look. I can't imagine how long it would take to put every individual piece of art that's been created in this show in place. Creating good art for the visuals is a challenge enough, but creating great art for the sake of showing great art is something else.

I was really happy to see Yaguchi have faith in himself and his art today, it took a lot to get him there but he made it back. Ooda even praised him for the amount of emotion you can feel coming from the canvas, which was what I was talking about last episode. I'd love to see more of that style from Yaguchi as he comes to better understand art and what it means to him. He seems to be on nearly the correct path thanks to his spat with Yotatsuke, but I have a feeling he's leading himself slightly astray due to that last shot of him today. Speaking about Yotatsuke, it was really interesting to get to see more of his character today. While it came at the expense of time with Yaguchi's original friends (I really enjoy them! I wish they had more screentime!), I think it paid off well. He really came across as jealous of Yaguchi while keeping up his genius front. Really, I think that's what caused him to leave the cram school, not wanting to be compared to Yaguchi. He's more attractive than Yotatsuke, potentially more intelligent, and he's even beaten him out in art now. It'd be crushing to face that when he treats you so friendly.

Aww, Yatora cried. Yatora is doing everything he can to improve, to be a better artist. What Yotasuke said to Yatora is really awful. If you don't have something good to say, just keep it to yourself. Welp, that fuels Yatora's desire to be even better at arts. Good thing there are people like Ooba-san who truly understand.

Go, Yatora! Kill them with your art!

Interesting episode. Not sure what exactly was the deal with Yotasuke's sudden rudeness but since I only care about Yaguchi here, I'm glad he used Yotasuke's offense towards him as a way of self-encouragement.

This was probably my favorite episode, that being said, I did pause it a lot. It probably took me about an hour to get through the whole thing. I'm really struggling to focus right now.

Anyway, first things first, this episode brought my attention to a particular painting early on: Gabrielle d'Estrees and one of her sisters. I'm on Amazon right now ready to buy a copy for my house. I think it's one of the most hilarious things I ever saw. So, kudos for that.

There was a good amount of development for Yaguchi. At this point, the series is really just making me want to read the manga. Which I guess is ultimately the point? So, good job series, you brought attention to a fairly young series. Hasn't even hit 50 chapters yet.

I still wish it wasn't so choppy and rushed, but I'm still enjoying it a fair amount.

Yaguchi is on the right track. Instead of trying too much that would result in something half-baked, stick to your strenghts and utilize them. Just be yourself and express your emotions. It's so simple.

This was another nice episode, getting more invested each week.

He said that Yaguchi already got everything (was primarily referring to friends I guess) and that there's no need for him to choose art. I would intetpret it as art being the only thing Yotasuke got to make himself feel better. It's the pillar of his self-esteem, yet he still doesn't have friends/ wasn't able to make friends. He wouldn't be able to handle it if Yaguchi exceeds at this one thing that's everything to him.

This story has a lot of valuable art advice. The anime's director should probably listen to them!

I am annoyed that they cut out the extremely valuable advice on composition. Was it to hide the fact that the anime is horrendous at it?

I like how Yaguchi realises that artists are not just randomly making stuff. Every colour and location of objects need to be properly thought out.

Kuwana and Yaguchi find themselves among intimidating artists. I have felt that way too around other artists. But, in my experience, I later realised how funny it actually was because those artists were not thinking about me at all.

I still can't figure out why someone would cut up a stretched canvas. I wonder what kind of advantage that would give.

Yotasuke hates the idea of drawing for exams. I relate to that a lot.

When Yotasuke saw Yaguchi had friends, he was immediately jealous. It must have seemed like he was made to realise his own loneliness.

You can't tell in this anime, but in the manga, it was so nice seeing Yaguchi go to the University with his friends. In most stories, the protagonists have to give up their old friends when they do what they like. But, Yaguchi's friends stay with him all the time.

Yotasuke looks like he's always on his guard. Art is everything to him. His only friend. The only thing he can trust. The only thing that belongs to him. But, for Yaguchi, who has many people around him, art is freedom and self expression. So, their friendship is my favourite relationship in this story. And the way they help each other grow.

Yotasuke is my favourite character. (He's kind of like Nico di Angelo.)

Yes, you can. I perfectly know how you feel and that's why I put the manga panel in my comment. It just lacks the same feeling that the manga gives off. It is what it is, we can't change anything. Just gotta bear with it.

I am kind of sad that the adaptation that we finally got was not a very good one. And, this will probably never get a better adaptation now. (´。_。`)

I think this episode was enough to keep me around for the next one but we’ll see how I’m feeling in a week. Not much I can say that I haven’t before. This adaptation is not good and the anime lacks much of an impact because of it. Yaguchi crying while making his latest painting was a good moment, but that again goes back to source material being good. However long the writing can carry this will be how long I continue watching.

Anime continues to be very mediocre. It’s not getting worse, but it’s not getting any better either.

It’s just rushing through the source material, while not doing anything to elevate the source material visually. It’s very “paint by the numbers” (heh art pun), which makes it pretty boring to watch.
I’ve seen this said by others many times before, but the anime could have been amazing if it got the same treatment and March Comes in Like a Lion did. What studio SHAFT did to elevate the manga was soso good. But with Blue Period, it feels so stale and uninspired, zero passion out into it. Which is ironic since it’s a story about creating art. This manga had been done do dirty with this mediocre adaptation.

And because of its release schedule with Netflix airing these episodes a week after the JP release, it’s getting totally forgotten about

The only positive I can say is that the VA for Yotasuke is doing a good job. He comes off as a huge jerk, but I can relate to him a little, as someone who applied to and went to art college. It can be easy to become cynical sometimes

I get what Yotasuke meant about exam art, I know my friends who are into art absolutely despised the art they taught at school. Though there really was not any reason for him to be so rude to Yaguchi. Though I'm glad Yaguchi's friends from the first episode got more screentime, I was scared they were just gonna be forgotten side characters. Also I like Kuwana, I hope we learn more about this curse next episode.

that bg "music" doe . . .

anyways art doesn't have to be heavily calculated or calculated at all. study composition, analyze other people's work, develop your taste, and you won't need to think hard, you will just naturally place everything the right way

also in my country doing "exam art" is the only thing that gets you enrolled anywhere. which is fine, i don't see how it's tragic...

Again, a pretty good episode, but it definitely feels like it's lacking something. I've only read 14 chapters so far, and that "I'll kill them with my art" scene is one of my favorites. I feel it could have been better if they dragged the scene out a little longer, cause it felt too fast, but it was still pretty good. Also, they skipped a Kuwana scene that gives hints of her personal problems.

I love Ooba-sensei though, she's great, also Yatora's delinquent friends.

Pretty interesting take on how they approach the characters' take on "exam art". I know Yaguchi is making a damn effort to show that he wants in to TUA, even though the others don't feel the same way. Yotasuke might be fussing right now, but I think he has some good reasons why he's mad.

Yaguchi has some nice friends :)

I love the animation, even if they cut expenses by being less detailed when characters are talking and whatnot, it's still beautiful to look at, for both paintings and the art making. Plus I feel like crying during almost every episode for some reason lol probably because I get emotional when it comes to art.

This series is making me want to read the manga, but I'm liking what we're getting so far. I agree with everyone here who says it seems like it's lacking something, and I hope the manga has it.
