i can sit here and nitpick all day, but that sounds like a un-convincing waste of time. and i want this to be something that even fmab fans can see my points. so i only talk about my biggest problem.
i think that father, is one of the worst main villains i have ever seen, and i am not even being harsh enough by saying that.
lets start from his character type, a none human thing with a god complex. it fits well with the themes of the show, but it is a done to death and fairly easy to write concept. if done well it could complement the themes of the show, but there would still be a lot better and original ways of doing it. the concept can work but rarely makes an interesting character. the only example that i can think of that made a great character of this concept was light from death note.
so the concept is generic, but that would make the villain, generic, not bad. well the problem is that, fmab ruined that already generic concept in almost every single possible way.
so lets go point by point.
1. the origin, fmab has a clear set of rules relating to alchemy and science. well the only thing that breaks those rules is the main villain. they say that he was made from edward's father's blood. that's it. in a story that has literal plot twist around the laws alchemy, you can't just have a talking smarter than human black thing and say "oh yeah its made from human blood".
this is a problem. breaking the rules of the world is not a small nitpick it is very important, specially when it is affecting the main villain and story directly.
2. his pride, ok so he has left the pride out of his buddy just like the other 6 sins huh? so, how tf was his downfall underestimating humans. that is literally just having pride with a skin. his personality almost has no connection to the other sins true, but pride is 80% of his god damn character. if anything he had less pride in the backstory, WHICH WAS BEFORE HE GOT RID OF HIS PRIDE!
3. he is just so stupid. he is meant to be smarter than humans. even with his already plot hole infested character ark, he should have lost, by underestimating humans. the show wants you to think that's what happened. and it was almost the case. but that's only until the fight after he lost most his power.
he could have recovered. he could have ran away, he could have started over. that would be smart. but even if he 100% needed to fight. why would he waste his limited power, on massive explosions that hit like 2 people and making zombie people? you might say it was because he was too angry to think straight. but that would still be a problem because he should't have wrath.
and don't let me even begin on that last fight. fathers stupidity was only half the problem with that fight. that shit was one of the most plot convenient things i had ever seen in any anime. how does no one see the scene where al turns back into ed's arm as a huge problem? i'm not going to go through detail but please just go and watch that episode with a critical view, and just realize how stupid that freaking fight is. i am amazed how many people glance over it just because of how much they like the show.
so we have a main villain that is meant to be smart but is stupid. doesn't have the 7 sins but he actually has and breaks the rules of the series with his origin story.
that alone should be enough for this series to never be considered a 10/10 masterpiece. but it is still a very solid show that anyone can enjoy.
the show is a 8.25 for me. it is good, but if you think its objectively a masterpiece, or the greatest anime of all time. you either haven't watched many anime. or don't want to see that your favorite show is not perfect.
that is all. sign polygon2
