while as an animator he is one of the most radical, as a director he should have explored more genres and styles.

Though for this M.Ootsuka is better suited

Both Gurren lagann and Kill la kill have that over the top and stylish animation which I really like.

Edit : Yoko fanservice is GOAT tier.

he's decent as a director but that's about it, gurren lagann and klk were good but guy needs to create his own plot ideas. Promare was very bad, unwatchable for me, he's not at the level of kishi seiji for example, imaishi is a good animator but mediocre director and producer.

how about Dead Leaves or even Space Patrol Luluco that he is the series compositor or writer?

luluco is a mediocre parody, stuff like papillon rose did a better job at parodying a certain genre (magical girl anime), luluco is ok but nothing that impressive.
dead leaves is ok, a pretty crazy OVA but I don't think he deserves lots of praises for that. Sure, some praise here and there for dead leaves but let's not exaggerate

whats your thoughts on episode 5 of BNA? that is the baseball game episode its entirely storyboarded by Imaishi for me its the best episode of that show

in BNA he is just an action director on a lot of episodes so he is not the main director

In the end it seems that way after they meet success with a certain style and narrative and fullfill their long dreamed ambition, but initially there experimentation.

Eg Takahata, Miyazaki, S.Kon, Tomino etc started out very differently compared to how we got to know them.

Imaishi is still stuck to the scribblings if his high school days, something which is also necessary to a point.

In terms of variety nothing tops Osamu Tezuka both as an animator and manga artist. He tried everything from children to adult titles and indie animation.

i see

also CyberPunk Edgerunners looks like to be a serious or mature show so lets see if Imaishi can deliver and get out of his comfort zone but ye i got doubts since serious stuff does not fit his style

Promare for me is the weakest among his popular works like Gurren Lagann and Kill la Kill heck Promare does not even have sexual fanservice besides if you heard about the CPR scene that is meant for the ladies and ladies at heart fanservice, still a great movie to watch though imo just because of the visuals/animation and awesome battles but ye the story is weak

Since 2007, he always failed to deliver the next TTGL.
Probably he should try something else, because LWA is at least decent.

The mal one right?

I'm too lazy to screenshot but here's what I see

Top wo Nerae 2! Diebuster
add 2nd Key Animation (ep 3)

Top wo Nerae 2! Diebuster
add Animation Director (ep 4)

Top wo Nerae 2! Diebuster
add Key Animation (eps 1-2, 5)

Why don't we tag the op? @deg

Yeah but then my prior comment on post#19 wherein I stated that I need to watch Gunbuster still isn't invalidated, even if it's a sequel

Very positive, though regarding Gundam, credits should also go to M.Nagano who disagreed with Tomino regarding L-Gaim and went to make his own manga of Five Star Stories.

I don't understand what you're trying to say about Nagano. If he's done nothing but Five Star Stories for most of his career, doesn't that mean he "is still stuck to the scribblings if his high school days" like Imaishi? Personally, I preferred L-Gaim.

He has a unique style for sure, and I kinda like his animation. However, he is hit-or-miss type of director to me.

Still, Gurren Lagann is an inspiring work.

Nagano's mecha design in Lgaim and Zeta was very influential and it changed the genre forever

There were rumours that he fell through with Tomino when the latter married his crush, voice actress Maria Kawamura but overall he did not like the direction LGaim was getting and wanted more creative control

Or else who knows, we could be talking about him instead of Tomino.
