'Ohba said that L is the smartest character in the manga because "the plot requires it".'

Apparently this quote can be found in 'Death Note 13: How to Read. Viz Media. p. 215' but I have checked Death Note 13 and it doesn't say anything resembling that line.

Does anyone have a scan of the alleged source? If so, post it here.

This honestly seems like the biggest cope promulgated L fans (we know how much they hate the fact that Light beat him).

No, actually in the '13th volume' they show you the characters qualities in different graphics and according to the creators Light is smarter than L. For me, L is the smartest one but not for the authors.

Actually Near is the smartest one not that I like him but I heard somewhere that the author of the death noted rated his intelligence 9/10 Light a 9/10 L-8/10 and mello a 7

I also dont see the article where writer says l is the smartest character but it's true imo that he is the smartest character, in most of skills he is best. He solve many cases even in his childhood. And grow some balls to use your actual acc.

L indeed was smarter, although I find him an insanely boring character. Ik he's a super fan favourite and all, but Light was a way more compelling character than he ever was.

Just based off assumptions, it's not even that bad of a take to begin with. I mean, he's clearly top 3 so it makes sense why top 1 isn't a stretch

Light is smarter than L. [spoiler] he was able to trap Rem into killing L (iPhone 12) so everything would be easy for him until Near (the old flip phone) came.

Light outsmarted L so therefore Light is technically smarter but Near outsmarts Light so Near is the smartest character out of all.

well Light had a supernatural element with him which L pr none of the other characters knew about. If L knew beforehand that there's a death note and shinigami are real than L would have used those details to his advantage.

I don't understand why people like L more than Light. The story was about Light, L was just one of the sidekicks who try to defeat protagonist.
I love Monogatari Series

People say that Light was a terrible human and L was the one who was after the real justice. But if you read the manga you'll come to know L was no different or even worse than Light

I don’t think people saying L is smarter has anything to do with them being L fans, for me personally Light is my fav anime character of all time, but I can still clearly see that L is the smarter character

L was far more likeable. Ultimately though, Light outsmarted L and managed to kill him, so he's smarter indeed, yes. He's probably smarter than Near as well but he underestimated him big time and thought he had no competition whatsoever once L died.

Well neither actually demonstrates their supposed intelligence, so by the Death of the Author philosophy the entire topic is moot.

Well L is actually pretty smart but he neglect his back to light which gave the chance to light to kill him which means light is smarter.
Either than that light has proved alot of times that he is the smartest

With no offence bro we all know that light was able to defeat l because of supernatural powers we can't even imagine what would happen if l was the owner of the Death Note it will be beyond everything but I am not saying that light was not smart he killed L and outcome matters

Come on we know/we can say L is the smartest just because he competed with light even after he had supernatural powers by his side ...

Light brought the situation in that way that would benefit him. He erased L and a Shinigami . He won against an ARMY of detectives while being a suspect the whole time. Light is smarter then L. He won

I vaguely remember that line, but I don't have my copy of volume 13 with me, so I can't double check. I'm pretty sure it was mentioned in the interview section where the author and illustrator answered questions.

Anyway, saying that L was the smartest because of the plot seems like a weird thing for the author to say though because Light was the one who won with supernatural help precisely because the plot demanded that he had to beat L.

Well sure, but the OP was asking for a specific source of information, not opinions from viewers. And thankfully I finally found my copy of volume 13 and the exact quote that they were looking for. It's on page 191 of the English edition, question #8:

Interviewer: Who do you think is the smartest character?

Ohba: L. Because the plot requires it [laughs].

Obata: Near. Because he cheats.

Note that Obata is just the illustrator, and while I respect his art, his opinion on who the smartest character is is kind of irrelevant since he had zero input on the story or development of the characters unlike Ohba Tsugumi.

Such a dumb statement. Literally every single appearance of theirs demonstrates their vast intelligence. If you can’t see that at all, then obviously it is your intelligence that is questionable.

For me as a huge Light fan I feel L's smarter not because Light is dumb or anything, but because Light has way more advantages than L with Shinigami, Being Close to the case, and being able to influence Misa as his scapegoat.

L has his advantages too, but he sticks out so much more and every move he makes is public with very little room to not be able to hide like he did when he was first introduced.

This is why I feel that criticism towards Near is kinda dumb because Near alone didn't defeat Light, Near used EVERYTHING that L layed out and everyone that was willing to help defeat Light to eventually win.
